18 Unmissable Places to See in Mykonos

Updated: May 30, 2023

Only by hearing the name Mykonos, I am sure your mind gets full of images of windmills, Little Venice, and the central Town of Chora.

We have all seen many pictures of this incredible island on social media.

Now it is your turn to post beautiful pictures of one of the most famous islands in Greece, with the difference that you will be the protagonist of those pictures this time.

Mykonos is well-known as a gay-friendly party island, but it can also be the perfect destination for families and people who don't want to party.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 18 Unmissable Things to See and Do in Mykonos

Mykonos offers many beautiful beaches, with crystal clear water where to swim all day.

There are magical spots where to take stunning pictures, relaxing bars, and restaurants on the waterfront where breakfast, lunch, or dinner are available.

And obviously, many bars and clubs were to party all night.

Did I mention the accommodations?

In Mykonos, you can find accommodations for every budget, but remember that even the cheapest room on the island can cost you like a mid-range room in other Greek islands.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 18 Unmissable Things to See and Do in Mykonos

Mykonos is famous for its luxury private villas with infinite swimming pools around the island. They are expensive but worth the price because they are beautiful.

It can be visited on a budget if you follow the advice I wrote on "15 Tips to Visit Mykonos on a Budget", but if you have money to invest in a beautiful holiday full of luxury and excess, this is your holiday destination.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 18 Unmissable Things to See and Do in Mykonos

1. Explore Mykonos Main Town Named Chora:

Walking around Mykonos main town Chora is the best thing to do on the island.

You are going to fall in love with it and trust me that you are going to spend hours walking around, taking pictures of the many lush bougainvilleas, the white-washed stone storefronts, and explore all the beautiful shops that sell arts, crafts, and hand-made clothes.

Choose a cafe with some tables in the street and enjoy a coffee while watching tourists pass by; relax, breathe the fresh air from the sea full of healthy iodine, and realize you are finally in the famous Mykonos.

Remember that everything opens after 10 am in Chora, so if you wish to take pictures in the famous alleys, Chora is pretty empty until then.

2. Have a walk along Matoyianni Street:

This is the most famous street in Chora, where all the most famous shops are located.

You will find every souvenirs from Greece you wish to buy. From well-known designs to handmade Greek summer clothes, Greek and Mykonian arts and crafts, Jewellery, leather sandals, and much more.

During the evening, Matojianni is probably the most crowded street to stop for a drink in one of the many bars or have a romantic dinner in one of the many local restaurants with a sea view in Mykonos.

3. Take a postcard picture of the famous windmills:

You have probably seen Mykonos windmills in so many images by now that when you are there, you will feel like it is not your first time in Mykonos.

It can be pretty crowded from late morning to the evening, so if you plan to take a picture with no one around, get there very early in the morning. Mykonos windmills are part of my article on where to watch the sunset in Mykonos, so check it out!

I don't need to give you their address, trust me. You are going to see them. They are huge and located on the left side of Chora while looking at the sea.

4. Get a coffee or lunch sitting near the sea in Alefkandra (Little Venice):

Just be careful that during windy days you can get a shower from an unexpected sea wave.

This area is filled with bars and restaurants right on the waterfront.

I saw it was tranquil in the morning but during the late afternoon and evening were packed, so book a table in advance if you know a restaurant where you wish to have dinner.

You can quickly get there after taking some pictures with the windmills because Little Venice starts at the bottom of the little hill where the windmills are.

You can take some pictures from there.

Mykonos is one of the most popular islands in Greece, and of course, there are some spectacular beaches there.

You only need to choose which could be the best for you to enjoy your holiday.

That is why I wrote an entire article explaining the differences between all the beaches in Mykonos. With everything they have to offer and how to get there.

I also added a list of all the Hotels around each beach. Just in case you are planning to get accommodation only a few meters from the shore, where you will see the beach as the first thing you see in the morning from your room window.

6. Spend a day or two in one of the most famous beach clubs in Mykonos:

Mykonos is known as a party island, a place to have fun, drink and dance on the beach and take thousands of pictures to post on all your social media.

That is why you will find one or more beach clubs on almost every beach on the island.

They all offer very comfortable but expensive sunbeds with wood-made umbrellas, where to lay all day, get tan, get delivered straight to you a nice cocktail, and even your lunch.

If you prefer to sit at a table, they all have a stylish bar/restaurant to get some local fancy food.

SantAnna Beach Club Mykonos

Most of them have a live DJ that will choose the right music for your Greek holiday mood. There is also a dance show at sunset to make you dance on your sunbed in some of them.

After all, what is a holiday in Mykonos without a Beach Party?

Nammos Beach Club Mykonos

The most famous Beach Clubs in Mykonos are:

Principote: This is a stylish place to enjoy a sunny day in Mykonos. It is located on the west side of Panormos Beach on the island's north side. The food is delicious, and there are people of all ages, just in case you are looking for a place where there are not only young people. See Principote here.

Scorpios: Located on the Paraga beach, this place is the most famous for its sunsets and the Greek style. See Scorpios here.

Jackie O: Located on Super Paradise Beach, this is the most famous LGBTQ-friendly spot with a pool and a fantastic bay view to sip cocktails and have fun while watching a drag show at sunset. See Jackie O here.

SantAnna: This is a beautiful beach club, with a big swimming pool to spend a day relaxing and dancing with the live DJ. See SantAnna here.

Nammos: This is a very luxurious place to spend a day; there are some costly shops inside and a fabulous fish restaurant where you will choose your fresh fish right from the counter. See Nammos here.

7. Visit the desert island of Delos:

If you check a Mykonos map, you will see a tiny island on the southwest side.

Delos Island is an archaeological site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Apollo and Artemis were born (according to Greek mythology).

You can get there by booking an unforgettable boat tour from Mykonos to Delos Island.

On this island, you will see many sites dating back to the 7th Century BC, like the Terrace of the Lions, the Minoan Fountain, the Doric Temple, and some mosaics at the House of Dionysos, House of Dolphins, House of the Lake, House of Trident and House of Masks.

8. See an Epic Sunset in the Most Famous Spot in Mykonos:

If you wish to get stunning pictures with the Chora behind you and a fantastic sunset, this is a place you have to book.

It is called 180 Sunset, it is pretty expensive but fabulous.

You have to book a table in advance if you want the spot you like.

180 Sunset Bar Mykonos

The bar is divided into two sections: table free (you sit where you want if the table is free) and the second section for bookings; you can book the table you like, but you have a 50 euros minimum to spend per person.

It is worth the booking because if you get two cocktails each and a couple of appetizers, you will reach 50 euros per person without any problem.

Also, the free area can get crowded with people trying to take pictures with others obstructing the view.

Baboulas Ouzeri Restaurant

9. Get a lovely sunset dinner in one of the many places around the Chora:

The main town of Mykonos is located on the island's west side, which means you will enjoy a fantastic sunset every evening from there.

There are many restaurants with a sea view in Mykonos, so my advice is to walk around the first day you arrive on the island, choose where you want to have dinner and book a table in advance.

This is how I did it. I saw this place right on the sea, with the Chora view, and I booked a table right on the edge near the water.

Oh, guys, it was so romantic!!!

I loved it!

10. Check out some of the most famous Bars in Mykonos:

Mykonos is well known to be a party island, and it is.

That is why I made a list of all the best bars and clubs so you will know where to go to have fun during your Mykonian nights.

Queen of Mykonos: You will like it if you are looking for a place to dance on the inside and where to enjoy a drink and have a chat outside in the reserved street area. See Queen of Mykonos here.

Jackie 'O: don't confuse it with the Jackie O Beach Club; this is a very famous Gay bar in the main town, where to spend all night dancing. See Jackie 'O Bar here.

Caprice: this is a cocktail bar on Little Venice's waterfront. A very scenic place where to enjoy a cocktail while in Mykonos.

Galleraki: another lovely cocktail bar in Little Venice.

Cavo Paradiso: You will like this place if you look for a nightclub with famous DJs. It is located on Paradise Beach. See Cavo Paradiso here.

Scandinavian Bar: located in the middle of the Chora, it has a club feeling inside and a more relaxed outside. It takes all the space in the street outside, a nice place to stop for a drink while exploring the town at night. See Scandinavian Bar here.

Astra: This is a posh dance club in the main town, so dress up accordingly. See Astra here.

11. Get a bite before bed at the most famous Gyro joint in town:

It is open all day in case you fancy something delicious and cheap. Jimmy's Gyro is the most famous place to grab good Gyros, souvlaki, and burgers.

It may be very crowded during the evening and night, but it is worth it. I bought a Gyro in the middle of the night and ate it while exploring the town.

12. Have a walk in the Old Harbour of Chora:

The Old Harbour of Chora is a place you will pass by if you leave your rental car at the port car park. It is the entrance to the Chora by the waterfront.

It is the best place to take incredible town pictures, stop for ice cream, drink, or buy souvenirs.

13. Take a picture of the Panagia Paraportiani:

On the north side of Little Venice, in the Kastro neighborhood, you will see this famous church while walking toward the Old Harbour.

This building was built between the 15th and 17th centuries and comprised four churches underneath a fifth built on top.

14. Book some fantastic activities:

Mykonos has excellent activities to book to make your vacation the best.

From town walking tours, incredible Greek food cooking classes, relaxing boat tours, and for more adventures, wild jeep tours to discover the most remote sites in Mykonos. If you wish to see what's hidden underneath the surface, don't forget to book a scuba diving experience.

You will not have a moment to get bored on this beautiful island.

Barefoot Luxury Living

15. Check out the many Art Galleries in town and outside town:

While having fun in some Beach Clubs, you will see that some of them (the luxury ones) have some very particular art all over the place.

Most of them come from an artist who creates art from wood from all over the world.

There is also an amiable and big shop you can visit only a few km from the main town. The shop is named Barefoot Luxury Living.

There are so many things to fall in love with inside that shop, but you will also see some pieces in some small galleries in the main town.

16. Archaeological Museum of Mykonos:

Because Mykonos is not only party party party, it is also culture and discovers ancient Greece.

In this museum, you will admire artifacts recovered on Mykonos and the islands nearby.

17. Discover the north of the island and its

natural beaches:

The most famous and visited beaches are on the south side, full of beach clubs and luxury hotels, while the north side is wilder, with accessible beaches, where you will have to lie down on the sand because no sunbeds are available.

They are less crowded, windier, and far from the main town, so I highly recommend looking at some of them to see how Mykonos looked before becoming such a famous tourist island.

Read: "19 Most Beautiful Beaches in Mykonos" to plan ahead which ones to visit.

18. Try some water sports and have some fun with your friends:

There are many watersports to try while in Mykonos. The most famous spot is Super Paradise beach, where you can hire a jet ski, try fly-board, parasailing, kitesurf, and much more.

If you are more into something easy and relaxing, you can always get your snorkeling mask and snorkel along the coast. Stay near the shore and have a waterproof swim buoy to make yourself visible and keep your valuables safe and dry.

Check out watersports in Mykonos here. Book them in advance before they all get sold out.
