How many days should I spend in Trieste?

Trieste city centre is not very big, so you can easily visit it in a couple of days. But if you wish to explore also what is around this fantastic city, like the caves and towns around it, I highly recommend you to stay between 4 to 5 days.

Keep in mind that Trieste is very walkable so you can just explore it on foot.

1. Bohinj Lake, Slovenia.

Bohinj is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia (approx. 4km in length). It is located in the Julian Alps in a stunning natural landscape.

It rivals Lake Bled for the title of Slovenia's most beautiful lake. Visitors love to go to Lake Bohinj for its unspoiled nature, enjoy crystal clear emerald-green water, and relax in its picturesque natural view.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

This lake is not known yet by mass tourism. Bohinj is a peaceful and relaxing destination spot so you should definitely check out a hotel where to spend one night.

Enjoy the stunning scenery by taking the Vogel Cable Car up the mountains for a fantastic lake view. Bohinj has plenty of activities to offer for adventure lovers, including swimming, canoeing, cycling, and hiking.

How can I get to Bohinj lake from Trieste?

Unfortunately, there are no guided tours or direct buses available to reach Bohinj Lake (as I said, is not part of the tourists' mass destinations) so a good way to get there is by renting a car (you can get there in 1.5 hours).

2. Grado and Aquileia.

Grado is a historic town located on a lagoon island on Italy's northeast Adriatic coast, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It is regularly defined as a northern relative to Venice because, at one time, it was more important than the other one.

Now Grado is a fishing port with a pretty town centre. It is mainly known as a major tourist resort with kilometres of sandy beaches well equipped.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

When Grado belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire, it was developed as a spa resort. The town is not too far from Trieste Airport and is reachable from Trieste and Venice by train and also by bus.

This is a good spot where to stop overnight in a nice hotel when going from Trieste to Venice and vice-versa. It is also an excellent destination to combine a summer holiday with sand, sightseeing, and archaeology thanks to its proximity to Aquileia, only 9 km away from its ruins.

Grado's historic centre is beautiful and renewed recently, so if you are looking for a holiday with a mix of sun, beach, and fun in a historic town, Grado is perfect for you.

Would you like to explore around Trieste and plan a perfect Trip? Have a look at all the possible transport available here:

Trains

An excellent website to buy train tickets in Italy is Rail Europe, where you can check all the trains available and book your tickets in advance, I always use it when travelling in Italy, and it is a great website.

Buses

There is also this way to travel around Italy, cheaper than train for sure but not so fast, so it all depends on how much time you have and your budget.

Sometimes if there is not a train, there is a bus so in case you are looking to buy some tickets, I advise you to do it on Omio, where you can also buy train tickets.

Rent a Car

If you like driving like me, you can always rent a car, and in this case, I always have a look at my favourite rental car websites, and I see where I find the best deals.

Have a look at them here:

DiscoverCars: Discover is a Skyscanner, but for rental cars. And since you're comparing lots of different companies, you also get to choose from many other vehicles.

Rentalcars: is an international car rental booking service that is present all over the world and it is the world’s biggest online car rental service. They work with over 900 car rental companies in 60,000 locations across 160 countries and always find the right car in the right place at the right price.

There is also another way to travel that not everybody thinks about and it is by Renting a Scooter or a Bicycle. If the weather is nice, why not enjoy the beauty of Italy driving a nice Scooter or a Bicycle without the issue to find a car park?

If this is an option you may consider, I have a fantastic website to advise you to check:

BikesBooking: You will be able to choose between any scooter, motorbike, quad or bicycle.

3. Piran, Slovenia.

Piran is a beautiful town overlooking the Adriatic coast of Slovenia, and it is a real jewel made of narrow streets that open into beautiful squares. That's why the city is known as Slovenian Venice.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

Piran will please you with its perfectly maintained historic centre and Gothic architecture that you will have the impression of walking inside a work of art.

It is one of the three major towns of Slovenian Istria. The town is made of medieval architecture with narrow streets and compact houses.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

It is one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Until the mid-20th century, Italian was the dominant language, but Slovene replaced it as demographics shifted.

How can I get to Piran from Trieste?

You can reach Piran from Trieste in around 40 mins by renting a car or by bus from Trieste Bus Station in 1.15 hours. Check on Omio prices and availabilities.

Once in Piran, there are many fantastic activities to attend, like wine and food tasting tours, walking tours and much more. Have a look here at all the activities available.

4. Muggia

Muggia is a particular town with an Istro-Venetian aspect and is also my hometown.

Arriving at the picturesque dock with the ferry from Trieste, it almost seems like a crib, mainly in the evening. The Venetian-style atmosphere catches the eye thanks to the architecture, and the dialect, customs, and gastronomic traditions show a past shared with the Serenissima Republic.

Lying on the eastern side of the Gulf of Trieste in the northern Adriatic Sea, Muggia is the only Italian port town in Istria, and its harbour hosts a modern 500-berth marina for yachts (Porto San Rocco).

How can I get to Muggia from Trieste?

If you want to take a break from the noise and bustle of Trieste, take the ferry for a 30-minute scenic trip across the gulf to Muggia, a pleasant little town on the Slovenian border, not much troubled or altered by mass tourism.

Tip: you can catch a ferry here, in the Trieste marina, near Piazza Unità d'Italia.

If the weather is not so nice to catch the ferry, you can opt for the bus n.20 that goes from Trieste train/bus station to Muggia.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

You don't need to plan a whole day to visit it, a few hours will be enough. But if you are planning to spend some time on the seaside getting tan and swimming a bit, then a whole day would be perfect for you to relax.

Tip: Please don't miss trying the most delicious ice cream at the Gelateria Jimmy, right inside Muggia little harbour. Their ice cream is absolutely the best. My favourite flavours are Millefoglie and Ferrero Rocher.

The view from Muggia Vecchia. At night is an unforgettable experience

If you fancy spending 20 minutes on a bus to reach the highest point of Muggia, a marvellous Trieste gulf view is waiting for you at Muggia Vecchia, from the church terrace.

To get there, catch the bus n.27 from Muggia Bus Station. Trust me, the view is something breathtaking.

Also, an excellent solution to explore the area around Trieste is to spend an extra night to have spare time to see everything that this fantastic area offers.

5. Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Ljubljana is among the smallest capitals in Europe. It is never crowded but never dull, thanks to the university students who give it a youthful charm. Being Slovenia's economic and cultural centre, it has a lot to offer to the locals and visitors.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

Ljubljana is a perfect example of a blend of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian cultures. The old town is a blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings watched over by a medieval castle.

Valentina's Travel Guide, 6 Wonderful Day Trips From Trieste

It is worth booking a tour to visit Ljublijana, even for just a day. One of the best times to visit it is spring, summer and during Christmas when the town hosts a Christman market all along the river.

If you want to plan the best day trip in Ljubljana, click here and check the tours available in this fantastic capital.

I highly recommend booking the Food Walking Tour where you will taste the Slovenian delicacies and the Ljubljana City Tour which includes a visit to Ljubljana Castle.
