Best Venetian Restaurants in Venice
Restaurants in the Cannaregio district

1. Vini da Gigio:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Let me tell you about a little secret I found thanks to a local friend of mine. Tucked away in the quiet Cannaregio neighborhood is a place that feels like a warm hug, serving up the kind of food that dreams are made of. This is one of the best restaurants, known as Vini da Gigio.
Back in 1981, this place was just a simple bar serving classic Venetian snacks. It was a family affair, and the family still runs it today. Over the years, they transformed it into a proper restaurant while preserving the soul of the place.
They’re part of this cool program called Osti in Orto, which means they actually grow their own vegetables on the nearby Sant’Erasmo island, one of the islands near Venice. As a chef, it’s a significant difference, and you can genuinely taste the difference.
Lajos and I went there for dinner, during one of our trips to Venice, and I practically had to be rolled out of the place. We absolutely devoured their famous tagliolini alla granseola. (This seafood pasta dish is a bit more expensive than other seafood pasta dishes, but it is because it takes a very long time to clean a spider crab.)
Trust me when I tell you there’s a reason everyone raves about this dish. The pasta is so delicate, and the spider crab is delicious. Lajos and I split the seppie in umido con la polenta (cuttlefish stew with polenta).
The stew was rich and comforting, and the polenta was so creamy it practically melted in my mouth. It was a truly unforgettable meal.
What to order: tagliolini alla granseola (spider crab pasta), cuttlefish stew with polenta, gnocchi alle erbette e ragu di moscardini (herbs gnocchi with baby octopus ragu), anguilla alla griglia (grilled eel), fegato alla veneziana con polenta (liver stew with polenta).
Dietary options: seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

2. Osteria l’Orto dei Mori:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Right behind Fondamenta della Misericordia, where all the Venice nightlife is, you’ll find Osteria l’Orto dei Mori, a surprisingly quiet and elegant spot. Before we even got to the restaurant, Lajos and I were charmed by the statues on the buildings in Campo dei Mori. According to a local legend, one of the statues, Sior Antonio Rioda, was a fraudulent merchant who was turned to stone, and touching his nose is said to bring great luck.
Chef Lorenzo Cipolla leads the food here, and it’s a brilliant blend of classic Venetian dishes with a hint of Sicilian influence. We had a great meal and shared the most incredible cod and pumpkin saor style with red onions. I also highly recommend the veal liver (one of the delicious Venetian dishes to try in Venice), served in a traditional Venetian style, accompanied by polenta. It was perfect.
We devoured the baked dentex fish fillet with seafood and artichokes. This is definitely one of the best local restaurants in the Cannaregio neighborhood for a special night out. The fantastic food, combined with a quiet atmosphere, makes it one of the top restaurants on my list.
What to order: cod and pumpkin saor-style with red onions, veal liver Venetian-style with polenta, baked dentex fish fillet with seafood and artichokes, and the mixed fried seafood with vegetables.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)

3. Il paradiso perduto:
Only Dinner, every day.
You know my favorite source for real local tips and info in Venice is the gondolieri. There’s a wealth of information. Last year, I cornered one while he was waiting for a client, and he insisted that Lajos and I had to get a reservation at a place called Il Paradiso Perduto. He promised it was a fantastic experience and an actual locals-only spot. He was so right.
This place is beautiful chaos. It’s an authentic old-style osteria, a real-life social hub where you can still sit down with strangers and strike up a conversation. Their menu changes daily based on what’s fresh from the fish market that morning.
We tried a mixed seafood starter, “il gran fritto”, a vast and delicious fish fry served with polenta, as well as the pasta alla busara (pasta with crayfish sauce, which is one of the best dishes to try in Venice). It was perfect.
But this place isn’t just a restaurant. It’s also a live music venue. Over the years, legendary artists such as Chet Baker, Vinicio Capossela, Kirk Lightsey, Antonello Salis, 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, Richard Sinclair, Will Bernard, EYM Trio, Henry Cook, Ares Tavolazzi, Tolo Marton, and many more have performed there.
It’s the kind of place that’s full of personality and just the right amount of beautiful madness. This is one of the best places to eat in Venice for a truly authentic and unforgettable experience.
What to order: the mixed fried seafood, pasta alla busara (pasta with crayfish sauce), pasta with clams, risotto al nero di seppia (black squid risotto), and anything else on the menu.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten, and lactose-free options (see menu)
Prices: $

Location: Sestiere di Cannaregio.

4. Trattoria Vittoria da Aldo:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Tuesday.
I must admit that I’m pretty shameless when it comes to seeking local recommendations. I once asked a lady behind the counter at Pasticceria Dal Mas (one of the unmissable breakfast spots in Venice) where her family goes to eat, and she immediately gave me a few names.
That’s how we found our way to Trattoria Vittoria da Aldo on a later trip for one of the best dinners we’ve ever had (we could not dine there that day because they were already fully booked; book it in advance).
This place is a family treasure, with the third generation now running the show near the Venice train station. They are also part of the Osti in Orto program, which involves growing their own vegetables on the island of Sant’Erasmo, one of the islands near Venice.
This dedication to seasonal, high-quality ingredients is evident in every bite. They serve traditional, seasonal seafood with one little quirky twist: they also have a fantastic lasagna on the menu that’s too good to be taken off.
Lajos started with some oysters, and I ordered the mouth-watering scallop gratin, which is one of my favorite seafood starters. We then shared two dishes that screamed authentic Venetian cooking. The first was Bigoli bruni in salsa di acciughe e cipolla, a local Venetian dish with a delicious anchovy and onion sauce.
The second was the incredible Baccalà alla vicentina con polenta abbrustolita. For my lovely, anxious travelers wondering where to eat in Venice in the Cannaregio sestiere for an authentic, comforting dinner, this is your spot.
What to order: Oysters, Scallops gratin, Bigoli in salsa di acciughe (pasta with sardines sauce and onion), Vicenza’s salt cod stew with polenta, cuttlefish stew, mussels with ginger.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)
Prices: $

Address: Cannaregio, 313, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy (see on Google Maps)
Location: Sestiere di Cannaregio.
5. Ostaria da Rioba:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Monday.
Remember how I’m always chatting with waiters and gondoliers for their secrets? Well, after our incredible dinner at Il Paradiso Perduto, I did it again. I asked our waiter for some tips on the best Venice restaurants in the Cannaregio neighborhood. He told me I had to get a table at Ostaria da Rioba on my next visit. I’m so glad I listened to him.
This is a beautiful family-run restaurant with a philosophy I can get behind. They are committed to sustainability and utilize ingredients sourced from the surrounding lagoon and Venetian islands. Being an Italian chef, this farm-to-table approach is what makes a meal truly special. They are even part of the Osti in Orto program.
Lajos and I decided to share everything, as we always do, so we could try more Venetian dishes. We had a great mixed Venetian fish appetizer and the linguine with crab and artichoke bottoms. Then we shared the baked monkfish with a nut crust. It was all so good. I knew instantly that this place had to be in my guide to the best places where to eat in Venice.
After our fantastic dinner, we even grabbed a delicious gelato at the nearby Bacaro del Gelato, one of the authentic gelaterias in Venice, to enjoy on our walk back to the train station to head home to Trieste.
What to order: Mixed Venetian fish appetizer in four tastes, Linguine “Mancini” with crab and artichoke bottoms, Baked monkfish with a crust of mixed nuts on raw spinach, sundried tomatoes, and
red onion, Raisins, apricot or plum under grappa.
Dietary options: vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

6. Hostaria Bacanera:
Lunch & Dinner, every day.
Sometimes you want to find a place that’s perfect for a romantic dinner or a beautiful evening with friends. You are going to be on holiday, after all, so why not look for a restaurant in Venice with a view? Hostaria Bacanera, not far from the Rialto Bridge, one of the most famous picture spots in Venice, is that spot.
It’s got a warm and welcoming vibe that makes you feel instantly at ease. When we went there, we sat outside and dined under the stars. It was magical.
This place operates under the principle that the very best food is always based on what’s fresh and in season. They obtain their fish and vegetables from the lagoon and surrounding areas daily, resulting in a constantly changing menu.
My advice? Trust the chef and ask about the specials; they prepare a mix of Venetian and Milan dishes. You won’t be disappointed.
This is a must-visit for anyone seeking great restaurants while in Venice, Italy. It’s the kind of place that’s got charm, fantastic food, and an incredible story. They even have two portraits on the walls that the school of Tintoretto, the famous Venetian painter, made. It’s definitely one of the best places for a memorable evening.
What to order: any of their cicchetti with a glass of local wine as an aperitivo (they also have vegan and vegetarian cicchetti), Tagliatella al sugo di cannocchie (Tagliatelle with mantis shrimp sauce), Guazzetto di mare con pan tostato al timo cozze, vongole, calamari, folpetti, cannocchie, gamberi ( mix seafood stew).

7. Osteria Al Cantinon:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sometimes you want to go beyond the classics. Suppose you’re looking for a Venetian meal that’s a little more unpredictable and sophisticated. In that case, head to Osteria Al Cantinon, a great restaurant with a stunning view of the canal in Venice. It’s tucked away under a charming sotoportego in Cannaregio, not far from the Rialto Bridge.
The chef here, Serghei, loves to play with traditional Venetian cuisine and present it in a totally new way. Lajos and I had a fantastic lunch here this summer, sitting at a table along the canal and watching the gondolas glide by. We started with raspberry-marinated sea bass carpaccio and amberjack tartare. The flavors were incredible.
For our main, we had the red beetroot spaghetti with marinated scampi. My lovely, anxious travelers, this might be the best pasta in Venice. We also had the pistachio-crusted swordfish fillet, and it was absolutely delicious.
You can also enjoy a delightful 5-course tasting menu for 85 euros. This is, without a doubt, one of the places to book if you are looking for a wonderful place where to eat in Venice to have an unforgettable meal that’s both creative and romantic.
What to order: Seared scallops, Beetroot marinated salmon carpaccio, Piedmontese beef tartare, the red beetroot spaghetti with marinated scampi, Black Spaghetti with black ink cuttlefish, Pistachio crusted Swordfish fillet, Veal liver “alla Veneziana” with polenta.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

8. Antica Adelaide:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
I am always drawn to old-looking restaurants tucked away on a side street. It’s a little quirk of mine. So, when Lajos and I were walking to Vini da Gigio, I spotted a place called Antica Adelaide and just had to stop by to check out the menu. With its decadent interior, I knew we had to come back.
This is a classic old-school tavern deeply rooted in tradition. Their seafood is incredible. For my lovely, anxious traveler who loves to eat, I highly recommend trying the mixed fish platter. It’s so big it’s meant for two people. It was a feast, but we managed to finish it. We also noticed that they have the famous moeche (one of the unmissable Venetian dishes to taste) when in season, as well as the rare percebes or goose-neck barnacles.
If you are looking for fantastic seafood in Venice, this is the place to be. It has a beautiful atmosphere and food that is truly exceptional. This restaurant is definitely one of the best restaurants in Venice Italy, offering traditional dishes with a few surprises.
What to order: the moeche (little local crabs), the mixed seafood platter, and their gluten-free pasta dishes (any of them).
Dietary options: vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (menu not available on website)

9. Al Timon:
Dinner, open every day.
First up is Al Timon, a place that will make you forget Venice is a city of water, because its menu is all about meat. Located on Rio della Misericordia, just a few minutes walk from the historic Jewish Ghetto, this is where you go to fight the tourist trap demons.
My fellow foodies, let me tell you, this place is a carnivorous paradise. I’m a big fan of eating local, and what’s more local than digging into a delicious horse tartare? I know, I know, it sounds a bit wild, but it’s one of my all-time favorite things to eat there.
When we went, Lajos was absolutely obsessed with the pork ribs and the grilled lamb chops, while I couldn’t get enough of the homemade gnocchi with ragu sauce and the beef tenderloin. They have a massive wine list and plenty of cicchetti too.
If you can, grab a table by the canal and watch the world go by while you fill your belly with some of the best grilled goodness you’ll ever have.
What to order: horse tartar, homemade gnocchi, fiorentina steak, lombatello steak, and homemade cantucci biscuits with sweet wine.
Dietary options: meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (menu not available on website)
Prices: $$

Best restaurants in St Mark’s
10. Bacaro e Trattoria Da Fiore:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Let’s talk about a place that feels like you’re stepping into a postcard. Bacaro e Trattoria Da Fiore is one of those charming, historic spots run by a local family that feels right at home in the San Marco district, near Campo Santo Stefano and the beautiful Santo Stefano church.
Forget about those super fancy and expensive places if you are on a budget. Bacaro e Trattoria Da Fiore is all about charm, from its beamed ceilings to its cozy, plastered walls. It’s the kind of place my lovely, anxious traveler can walk into and immediately feel at home.
They have a small area for grabbing a quick glass of wine and some cicchetti, making it an excellent spot for a light lunch in Venice, after visiting the Grassi Palace, one of the unmissable museums in Venice.
When Lajos and I went, we had the most fantastic seafood soup. I’m a simple gal, but the rich, flavorful broth was just perfect. Lajos couldn’t stop talking about his garganelli with gorgonzola cheese, Treviso radicchio, speck, and walnuts (he is a big fan of gorgonzola).
If you get lucky and go during the right season, you can try the moeche, those little local crabs from the Venetian lagoon.
The family that runs it, Sergio and his two children, clearly put a lot of heart into the place. They pay special attention to their wine list, which is a huge bonus. It’s precisely the unpretentious, delicious, and friendly spot you want to find when you’re exploring the real Venice.
What to order: moeche when in season, garganelli with gorgonzola cheese, Treviso radicchio, speck, and walnuts, and seafood soup.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. (see menu)

11. Bistrot de Venise:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
This place is for you, my lovely, anxious traveler. If you want to combat your travel anxiety with a fully organized evening where you can relax and be pampered, Bistrot de Venise is the answer. It’s an elegant restaurant that offers a comprehensive culinary experience. Seriously, every detail of the meal is explained to you, which, for me, is a total treat. It feels like a masterclass in Venetian history and food.
This place isn’t a budget-friendly find, but it’s where you go to splurge on a truly special night. Lajos and I had such a lovely time. The service was polite and attentive, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness.
The food itself was a work of art, with every dish being incredibly well-balanced and full of amazing flavors. I couldn’t help but marvel at how they update classic Venetian dishes while still honoring their rich history.
Don’t even get me started on the wine list. With over 60 wines by the glass, you have so many options that you don’t even know what to choose. They also have an absolutely delicious raw fish platter that is to die for, as well as some great vegan options and desserts that sound so good, it is impossible to pick just one. If you want to feel a little fancy while in Venice, this is your spot.
What to order: the raw fish platters, Sturgeon marinated in must cooked with pickled garden vegetables and ancient mustard, Fennel-flavored risotto with cooked-raw shellfish, dill essence, licorice powder, and star anise (Bistrot specialty, 1st place in the 8th National Food and Wine Competition “Risotto del Sommelier”), torta biancha reale.

12. Antico Calice:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Wednesday.
My lovely, anxious traveler, let me tell you about the best tip I ever got in Venice. My husband, Lajos, and I were getting a gondola ride, and I just had to ask our gondolier where he eats (you know me, guys, I’m always looking for new places to eat the local cuisine). He immediately pointed me to Antico Calice, near the San Salvado church. When a gondolier, someone who works on the canals all day, tells you where the locals eat, you listen.
This place has been a celebrated spot where to eat in the city of Venice since the 16th century. It’s even where Professor Marsich invented the “ombra de vin” or “a glass of wine drunk standing at the bar,” a Venetian classic. So you’re not just eating here, you’re literally taking part in the city’s rich history.
The current owners, Cristiano and Marco, also operate the renowned Osteria Alla Botte, ensuring excellent service. The best proof of all is that when you visit, you’ll see plenty of other gondoliers having lunch there. If it’s good enough for them, it’s definitely a spot for you to taste some authentic Venetian cuisine.
What to order: seafood risotto, salt cod stew with polenta, grilled octopus, breaded sardines.
Dietary options: seafood, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$
Book your table: see here.
Address: Calle dei Stagneri o de la Fava, 5229, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy (see on Google Maps)

13. Ristorante da Ivo:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday.
Let’s talk about that moment you get hungry near San Marco Square, one of the most visited places in Venice. That area is full of overpriced tourist traps. But tucked away, not far from all the chaos, is Ristorante da Ivo, a place that feels like a secret where locals love to dine away from tourists.
This isn’t just some random restaurant. This is where the A-listers go. I’m talking about Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and even Bono (can you believe it?). It’s so good that George Clooney literally had his bachelor party there. This place is famous for a reason, and let me tell you, the food and the experience live up to the hype.
So, in case someone asks you ‘Where did Brad Pitt eat in Venice?’ the answer is at Ristorante da Ivo, and you will be able to say that you dined there, too.
The best part, and this is where you can truly feel like a VIP, is that the restaurant has its own private gondola pier. You can arrive in true Venetian style, gliding up to the front door for lunch or dinner. Lajos and I felt so fancy pulling up to the restaurant this way. This is the perfect spot for a special night out where you can escape the crowds and enjoy a magnificent meal in pure luxury.
What to order: Venetian saor of sardines and scampi, cuttlefish risotto, spaghetti with bottarga, Venetian-style cuttlefish, lemon sgroppino flavored with Calvados, hot zabaglione.
Dietary options: seafood and meat options, as well as gluten-free and lactose-free options. (see menu)

14. Osteria Enoteca San Marco:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday.
Let me know if you’ve ever had that moment where you finish exploring a significant landmark and your stomach starts rumbling. That was me and Lajos after we spent the morning at the Doge’s Palace, one of the most beautiful museums in Venice. Thankfully, we had a plan. Just a few minutes’ walk away is Osteria Enoteca San Marco, the perfect place to refuel and recharge.
This restaurant was founded by four friends who sought to create a space with a vibe that is both casual and elegant. They completely nailed it. The atmosphere is so relaxed and friendly, but you still feel like you’re in a special place. It’s the kind of spot where you can sit back and relax after a long morning of sightseeing.
The kitchen is open all day for lunch and dinner. Their menu is fantastic because it has a little bit of everything: meat, fish, game, seafood, and even some great vegetable dishes. And for all you wine lovers out there, they have a list of over 300 wines to choose from.
It’s an absolute haven of tranquility, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Piazza San Marco, making it the ideal choice for my lovely, anxious traveler.
What to order: Octopus, confit tomatoes, Taggiasca olives, celery, Mezzi paccheri, yellow datterino tomatoes, raw prawns, burrata and pistachios, Ravioli with wild mushrooms and buffalo ricotta, Grilled calamari, tassoi spinach and peppers, Venetian-style liver.

15. Osteria Ae Saracche:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday and Monday.
If you are looking for a fantastic dinner while in Venice, you should check out Osteria Ae Saracche. This is a genuine osteria, and its motto is “Few dishes, but good ones.” I love a place that isn’t focused on fancy decorations, and instead, puts all its energy into the food. The simple and modern interior is a clear invitation to focus on what’s important.
When Lajos and I had dinner at Osteria Ae Saracche, the mixed seafood appetizer was pure joy. We then shared the most delicious cuttlefish ink tagliolini with courgettes and prawns. We also had the baked octopus with cherry tomatoes, stracciatella, and pistachio grains, which was out of this world. We finished our meal with some incredible Venetian cookies and a sweet wine. Everything was perfect.
The service was also on point, which makes it a truly great experience for my lovely, anxious travelers. This is a must-visit for anyone who wants a fantastic meal at a local restaurant in Venice.

While every restaurant on this list is a winner, Osteria Trefanti is, for me, absolutely the best restaurant in Venice. Lajos and I have visited here many times over the years, and we will continue to come back because it’s a true hidden gem.
The chef Umberto Slongo is a master at transforming local, seasonal ingredients into something truly unforgettable. The menu changes constantly depending on what’s fresh from the Venetian lagoon or the nearby farms. This means you are getting the absolute freshest food, prepared with love and expertise.
The service is just as impressive. We had an attentive waiter and a funny, super-professional sommelier who made the entire experience feel special. It’s a wonderful, memorable evening that will make all your travel worries disappear.

Let’s talk about that time when you or someone you’re traveling with has different food preferences. Finding a place that satisfies everyone can be a total headache, but that’s where Osteria La Zucca comes in.
True to its name, zucca means pumpkin in English; this place is a paradise of vegetable-forward dishes. Many of their plates are loaded with delicious, hearty veggies. However, don’t worry, they also offer a variety of fantastic meat options on the menu. Seriously, everyone will leave happy and satisfied.

18. Trattoria alla Madonna:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Wednesday.
If you’re wondering which are the best local restaurants for a classic meal, I’ll tell you my personal favorites. I have dined at Trattoria alla Madonna many times. It’s in one of the side streets between Rialto and San Polo, and the homey atmosphere, with its beautiful Venetian-style floors and dark wood finishes, makes you feel like you’ve been eating here your whole life.
This trattoria is famous for a reason. While the seafood risotto is an exquisite must-try, I also highly recommend you get the clams and mussels marinara and the incredible fish soup. The spaghetti alla malomocchina is also a perfect Venetian dish. Their cuttlefish in tecia is another classic that everyone loves.
For anyone who wants to experience traditional food in a place that has been doing it right for decades, this is the place where to eat dinner in Venice at least once. If there is one tip I can give you for visiting Venice, it’s to make sure to reserve a table at this restaurant.
What to order: clams, mussels marinara, seafood risotto, spaghetti alla malomocchina (with mussel ragu), and cuttlefish stew.

19. Antica Trattoria Poste Vecie:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Tuesday.
Sometimes you want to go to a place that feels like stepping back in time. Antica Trattoria Poste Vecie is that place. It’s a truly exclusive and historic restaurant, featuring 16th-century fireplaces and frescoed walls that create a unique ambiance you won’t find anywhere else. You feel like you’re dining in a little corner of the ancient Serenissima.
If you go during the spring or fall, you absolutely must try the moeche. These are soft-shell crabs, and they’re a rare and expensive delicacy because they’re so hard to catch. When they’re in season, they are a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime treat.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best restaurants for a special occasion. For my lovely, anxious travelers seeking a stress-free romantic experience in Venice, a special romantic package is available. It includes an aperitif on a boat tour and a tasting menu paired with wine. I’ve already added it to my bucket list for a romantic dinner in Venice with Lajos.
What to order: Schie con polenta (little grey shrimps with soft polenta), carpaccio of red prawns, green apple and fennel, oysters, spaghetti with clams and bottarga, black tagliolini with crab meat sauce, spaghetti with lobster and fresh tomato.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

Italy Travel Tip: Most phone providers charge extra fees to use your data plan abroad. If you don’t want to pay a fortune to use the internet in Italy, buying an eSIM for Italy on Airalo is my favorite solution. It’s the fastest and easiest way to have all the data you need while traveling.

20. Antiche Carampane:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday and Monday.
If you’re looking for a restaurant with a rich and quirky history, you have to go to Antiche Carampane. This beautiful restaurant stands on a site that was once the heart of the city’s red-light district; however, it remains a long-standing favorite among locals today. It’s a hidden gem and an excellent spot for my lovely, anxious travelers who are staying in a hotel near the Rialto Bridge.
As a chef, I can tell you that this place is a must for any seafood lover. They source their ingredients from the nearby Rialto market every morning, ensuring everything is incredibly fresh.
The spaghetti in Cassopipa was incredibly delicious, and the sardines in saor were perfectly tangy and sweet. We also had the cod stew and mantis shrimp, and every single dish was a perfect example of classic Venetian flavors with a daring twist.
Many ask me, ‘Where do celebrities dine in Venice?’ The answer is at Antiche Carampane, especially during the Venice Film Festival, so book it in advance and you might see some celebrities at the table next to yours.
This is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable dining experience. It is one of my favorite seafood restaurants Venice has to offer.
What to order: spaghetti in Cassopipa, sardines in saor, cod stew, and mantis shrimp.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, gluten-free and lactose-free options (see menu)

21. Trattoria Da Ignazio:
Lunch & Dinner, Tuesday only dinner, closed on Monday.
If you’re looking for a restaurant with a seriously long history and a commitment to tradition, you’ve got to visit Trattoria Da Ignazio. This Venetian trattoria has been open since 1951 and is part of Osti in Orto, which means they actually grow their own vegetables on the island of Sant’Erasmo, how cool is that?
They also get their seafood straight from the Rialto fish market. It doesn’t get more local or fresh than that.
They take classic Venetian grandmother’s dishes and give them a modern, technical spin. This place is so exceptional that it attracts everyone from international celebrities to local architects, and many of their customers have been returning for years.
The most important reason to go is for the schie con polenta. These little gray prawns, stewed in a delicious sauce and served with soft polenta, are one of my all-time favorite Venetian dishes. It’s the kind of comforting, perfectly executed dish that will make you feel right at home.
What to order: schie with polenta, raw crayfish, mixed fried seafood, black ink cuttlefish with polenta, and tiramisu.
Dietary options: seafood, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (menu on website under construction)
Prices: $$
Book your table: info@trattoriadaignazio.com.

Location: Sestiere di San Polo.

22. Ostaria Antico Dolo:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
A little bit of travel magic happened on one of my last visits to Venice. I was walking near the Rialto Bridge, and I was lucky enough to snag an empty table at Ostaria Antico Dolo. This family-run establishment has been in operation since 1940, and you can sense its rich Venetian heritage.
The menu has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for seafood, meat, or vegan options. It’s the kind of place where you know you’re getting something authentic and delicious. The star of the show is their creamed cod (called baccalà mantecato), one of my absolute favorite starters and cicchetto in Venice. It is so good because it is made by hand every day using the finest stockfish.
It’s a place that shows you can still find excellent, traditional food right in the heart of the city’s most famous areas. Getting a table here is a lucky find, and it’s absolutely worth the visit.
What to order: cream cod, grilled local calamari, egg tagliolini with scallops and asparagus, tripe stew with polenta.
Dietary options: vegan, seafood, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$
Book your table: see here.
Address: Ruga Rialto, 778, 30175 Venezia VE, Italy (see on Google Maps)
Location: Sestiere di San Polo.

23. Antica Osteria Ruga Rialto:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
I am all about exploring Venice like a local. I mean, what’s the point of going to a place if you don’t find the secrets, right? So, when my local friend took me for a ride on her Sandalo, a traditional boat with a flat bottom, but not asymmetrical like the gondola, used for regattas, I was thrilled.
After we had so much fun on the water, she took me for a little aperitivo at Antica Osteria Ruga Rialto. It’s also known as “Gatto Nero” or “alla Botte,” and you can tell it’s a real Venetian spot just by its location a few steps from the Rialto fish market (one of the unmissable places to see in Venice).
This place is exactly what you imagine a classic Venetian osteria to be. It’s got a great old-school charm and the perfect vibe for a relaxed evening. They’re super famous for their Venetian aperitivos, and I can see why.
We had some local wine and tried a variety of different Venetian cicchetti, which are essentially slices of bread with delicious local toppings. It was the perfect little snack. I already added this place to my bucket list of restaurants to try on my next trip to Venice.
If you’re wondering where to go for an authentic experience that avoids tourist traps, you have to try this one. It’s definitely one of the best local restaurants in Venice for an authentic taste of the city, and it’s perfect for a casual lunch, dinner, or just a fun happy hour.
What to order: Sarde in saor, clams and mussels, mixed grilled fish, black ink squid pasta.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, gluten and lactose-free options (see menu)
Prices: $$
Book your table: see here.
Address: C. del Sturion, 692, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy (see on Google Maps)
Location: Sestiere di San Polo.
24. Osteria Bancogiro:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Monday.
There is a spot that perfectly combines a fantastic view with a great meal. When Lajos and I were exploring Venice, we found ourselves right next to the iconic Rialto Bridge, a place you absolutely have to see in Venice. We were a little hungry, and that’s when we found Osteria Bancogiro.
Yes, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but you are literally right there, with a fantastic view of the Grand Canal. In case you cannot afford a hotel with a canal view, dining in restaurants with a fantastic view of Venice could be a good way to experience the luxury of Venice.
It’s the perfect place to grab some “cicchetti” (Venetian tapas) or settle in for a proper meal. Whether you are craving fresh seafood or a hearty meat dish, they have something for you.
It’s the kind of place where you can sit at an outdoor table, sip your wine, and watch the gondolas glide by, all while being in the heart of one of Venice’s most famous spots. It’s totally worth it for the experience alone.
What to order: black tagliatelle with a spicy red sauce, mussels and bottarga, linguine, garlic, chili, and red prawn tartare, their tiramisu with amaretti biscuits.
Dietary options: seafood, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$

25. Osteria Da Fiore:
Friday & Saturday Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday, weekdays only Dinner.
If you want a truly unforgettable, top-tier dining experience in Venice, you need to know about Osteria Da Fiore. This place is over 100 years old, and the wonderful couple who runs it took it over in 1978, becoming the very first restaurant in Venice to receive a Michelin star. That’s how you know it is the real deal.
They completely revolutionized the food scene in Venice, moving away from a static cuisine and focusing on incredible, fresh ingredients. You’ll find a menu full of amazing, fresh fish, very special oysters, and a small but fantastic selection of meats like duck, guinea fowl, and lamb. The Venetian-style liver is a total must-try.
They also honor tradition beautifully. You can get Bigoli in salsa, delicious risottos, and fresh pasta made with ancient grains. There’s always cod on the menu and all the seasonal vegetables. Located on the Rio de le Do Torre near Campo San Polo, it is a perfect culinary stop.
What to order: honestly, anything from their menu.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$$
Book your table: see here.
Address: S. Polo, 2202, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy (see on Google Maps)
Location: Sestiere di San Polo.

26. Ristorante Casa Cappellari:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Monday.
I know you want to see the real Venice, and nothing says authentic to me like a restaurant with nothing to hide. That’s why I absolutely love Ristorante Casa Cappellari, which is conveniently located right near the Rialto Bridge. Here, the kitchen is open, giving you complete transparency into what’s happening.
You can actually watch the chefs preparing your dishes, which is like watching a cooking program on TV, but live. They source their fish directly from the market, and the menu is constantly updated to keep things fresh and interesting.
You know they are committed to quality because they even make all of their own bread, breadsticks, and taralli on-site. The homemade pasta is an absolute game-changer.
You can stop by for a special aperitivo and try their delicious “cicchetti” made with raw fish and meat. Or, you can sit down for a full lunch or dinner and choose from their fantastic seafood dishes, meat options, or vegetarian options. It’s a perfect mix of transparency, tradition, and fresh flavors.
What to order: The menu changes with the seasons.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$

Restaurants in the Dorsoduro district

27. Ristorante Oniga:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
After a great afternoon exploring the Dorsoduro neighborhood and visiting De Laurentis Vetri D’arte Venezia (you know me, I love shopping for handmade Venetian souvenirs), I found myself in Campo San Barnaba with a growling stomach. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Ristorante Oniga, a true go-to for locals that’s deeply rooted in Venetian tradition.
I love that they have a direct relationship with their producers, ensuring all their ingredients are top-notch and seasonal. We were starving and decided to try some of their specialties. We had to try the creamed cod (another of the unmissable foods to eat in Venice), which was perfectly savory and delicious.
But you absolutely, no-questions-asked, have to try their baked scallops. They are out of this world. We also shared the Bucintoro platter, a signature dish featuring toasted crostini and an abundance of seafood, which I practically had to be rolled home. This is the perfect spot to eat in Venice in the Dorsoduro neighborhood if you’re seeking for a genuine meal.
What to order: Sardines in Saor with White Organic Polenta, Fried Squids with Seaweed and Modena’s Balsamic Vinegar, Spaghetti Carbonara with Smoked Swordfish, Shrimp Scampi Ravioli with Artichokes, Baked Octopus with Potatoes, Green Beans, Tomatoes and Olives.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

28. Estro Vino e cucina:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Tuesday.
When you’re looking for the best Venetian restaurant Venice has to offer, you have to talk to a local. As an Italian chef from just a couple of hours away in Trieste, I make it my mission to uncover the real gems. Estro Vino e Cucina is one of those places. My husband Lajos and I loved it so much that I’m already dreaming about my next meal there.
Brothers from the island of Murano (one of the unmissable islands in Venice you should visit) opened Estro in 2014 near the Basilica S.Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. They focus on the freshest local ingredients and the seasons. The result is an amazing contemporary take on classic Venetian dishes. It’s a place where you can relax and truly feel the rhythm of the city.
Lajos and I were hungry for a complete experience, so we opted for the 60 euro tasting menu. I’m a stickler for good food, and this meal was top-notch. The menu started with a wonderful Venetian mix plate of local fish and cheeses. Then came the star of the show for me.
I’m telling you, my lovely, anxious traveler, that I could not get enough of their homemade pumpkin gnocchi. Next up was a perfectly grilled local amberjack steak served with fresh artichokes and salty anchovies. It was a beautiful dish.
The brothers at Estro are committed to local artisans. That’s why they have a huge cellar with over 700 natural wines. They even had the beautiful glasses and light fixtures custom-made by artists from their home island of Murano. It’s truly a celebration of Venetian life.
What to order: their menu change by the season.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. (see menu)
Prices: $$

29. Osteria Da Codroma:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Sunday and Monday.
On a hunt for hidden photo spots with my friend Silvia, we stumbled upon a true gem in the heart of Dorsoduro called Osteria da Codroma, along the Rio del Carmini. This place is a culinary institution for a reason. I later found out that if you ask a local where to grab a quick, delicious lunch in the area, they’ll say, “Go to Codroma.”
The menu is a love letter to Venetian tradition. They have all the classics like Bigoli in salsa and fried fish, along with plenty of ombre di vino (small glasses of wine) to wash it all down. We were lucky to snag a table and absolutely devoured their gnocchi with crayfish and paccheri with red radicchio and prawns.
This is the perfect spot for my lovely, anxious travelers who want a stress-free, casual, and authentic dining experience. For a place that feels like home and serves up incredible food, this is one of the best casual restaurants to dine at in Venice.
What to order: Bigoli in salsa, fried fish, gnocchi with crayfish, and mussels with tomato sauce.
Dietary options: gluten-free and lactose-free options (website not available)
Prices: $
Book your table: codroma@yahoo.it.

Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips. They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.
30. Trattoria Anzolo Raffaele:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
When I am in Venice, I love exploring areas far from the tourist crowds, which is one of the best things to do in Venice. Lajos and I were wandering around the Dorsoduro neighborhood near Campo Santa Margherita and the Zattere when we stumbled upon Trattoria Anzolo Raffaele. This place felt like a small, tranquil haven, where one could relax away from the crowds.
Since 2004, this charming trattoria has been serving up delicious food, focusing on fresh and seasonal ingredients. They are also part of the Osti in Orto program, which means they get their vegetables from Sant’Erasmo Island. I always appreciate that kind of dedication to quality.
This is the kind of restaurant that’s perfect for a relaxing break away from it all. If you’re looking for a peaceful meal and a genuine atmosphere, you’ll want to visit here. It’s one of the best local restaurants for a quiet and charming experience.
What to order: the selection of seafood appetizers, their choice of Italian cheeses, creamy beans and pasta soup, a seasonal fish fillet in a potato crust with vegetables, and creme brulee with a scent of lemon thyme from their garden.
Dietary options: seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options (see menu)

Restaurants in the Castello district

31. Hostaria Castello:
Lunch & Dinner Saturday and Sunday, weekdays only dinner, closed on Wednesday.
For my lovely, anxious travelers seeking one of the best restaurants for a romantic night, I have a secret for you. Waking up early in Venice to get those perfect, crowd-free photos is a travel blogger’s dream.
On my way to St. Mark’s Square (a very crowded place to see in Venice), I stumbled upon a restaurant and pinned it on my map. I’m so glad I did, because Hostaria Castello turned out to be the perfect spot.
This restaurant, in my opinion, is a celebration of both Venice and its profound connection to the Middle East. The interior is stunning, featuring beautiful arabesque motifs that transport you to an old Ottoman cafe where you can relax after walking all day around Venice.
The menu is just as surprising, featuring a few dishes that take traditional Venetian cuisine and give it a modern, gourmet twist. We were blown away by the sautéed squid with fennel cream and the gnocchi in a squid ink sauce. The food was so creative and delicious, making it one of the top places on my list.
What to order: sautéed squid with fennel cream, gnocchi in a squid ink sauce, Chitarra-style spaghetti with knife-cut duck ragù and orange sauce, Spaghetti with crayfish “alla bùsara.”
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)

32. Corte Sconta:
Lunch & Dinner, closed Sunday and Monday.
If you’re looking for one of the best Italian restaurants in Venice that feels like a hidden gem, you have to find Corte Sconta.
Its name means “hidden courtyard,” and it’s a perfect description for this classic spot tucked away on a side street in Castello, not far from the Arsenale, which is an unmissable place to see in Venice. The beautiful inner courtyard is a little slice of green heaven right in the heart of Venice.
The star of the show here is the incredibly fresh seafood from the Venetian lagoon, prepared just as it has always been. They have all the classics, like spaghetti with squid ink, but also some fun surprises, such as beetroot maccheroni with prawns and zucchini flowers. There’s something delicious on the menu for everyone.
This restaurant is a true must-visit for its fresh food and stunning atmosphere.
What to order: beetroot maccheroni with prawns and zucchini flowers, spaghetti with squid ink, potato dumpling with scorpion fish, chanterelles, and snow peas, Mixed fried fish.
Dietary options: vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)

33. Al Covo:
Lunch & Dinner, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Al Covo is a perfect example of a truly traditional restaurant that is also dedicated to the future. It’s a proud member of the Osti in Orto association, which means they grow their own vegetables on Sant’Erasmo island and focus on sustainable fishing. As a chef, that’s something I truly appreciate.
When Lajos and I had dinner here, we tried the appetizer of raw fish and shellfish from the Upper Adriatic, which was an absolute joy. We also loved the local Garusoli, served with oil and lemon, as well as the delicious pasta and Gialèt beans with clams.
For dessert, you absolutely must try the famous Gianduiotto Veneziano, one of the famous Venetian sweets, accompanied by hand-whipped cream. It’s the perfect ending to a meal.
The simple and authentic dishes are a testament to the chef’s talent. This place is a must-visit for anyone seeking a truly exceptional experience.
What to order: Appetizer of raw fish and shellfish from the Upper Adriatic, local Garusoli (Murici) with oil and lemon, Pasta and Gialèt beans and clams, and for dessert, the famous Gianduiotto Veneziano with hand-whipped cream.

34. Nevodi:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
If you’ve decided to explore Venice’s more remote corners, far from the train station, Nevodi is definitely one of the best Italian restaurants in the city of Venice. Located on Via Garibaldi in Castello, this establishment boasts a distinctly modern approach, yet it remains quintessentially Venetian. The dishes coming out of the kitchen often offer a few surprises in a convivial and casual atmosphere.
I’m so glad we decided to go there and taste some of the local specialties. They offer a delicious crudo di Rialto, featuring raw fish from the Rialto fish market. They also have my personal favorite, polenta e schie, which is little gray prawns from the Venetian lagoon with soft polenta. We also had the seafood lasagna, and it was incredible.
For an authentic taste of modern Venetian cuisine in a great atmosphere, you can also get the Oyster Kristal or the pasta with prawns and pistachio pesto. And, when in season, you can also enjoy the famous moeche.
What to order: Oyster Kristal, il crudo di Rialto (raw fish from the Rialto fish market), polenta e schie (my favorite, it is little grey prawns from the Venetian lagoon with soft polenta), pasta with prawns and pistacchio pesto, seafood lasagna, and many more

35. Ristorante Local:
Lunch & Dinner, closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It’s no secret that I find all the best places thanks to my local friends. So when my contacts in Venice kept mentioning Ristorante Local, I knew I had to add it to my list. I haven’t been there yet, but it’s at the top of my list for my next visit to Venice. My friends tell me it is a new contemporary take on traditional Venetian cooking.
The restaurant, opened by siblings Benedetta and Luca, is now a labor of love for Benedetta and her husband, Manuel. They are truly working to create a special revolution in the Venetian dining scene. They combine their traditional upbringing with a new and contemporary dining language. This is precisely what my lovely anxious traveler needs. They want to experience a new type of Venetian dining.
Local offers a fantastic lunch menu for € 70, which includes four courses. For dinner, you can go for a seven-course tasting menu at 160 euros or a nine-course tasting menu at 190 euros.
My local friends say the dishes are a fantastic mix of local vegetables, meat, and fish. The flavors are a new and amazing twist on regional dishes. I’m eager to try it. It is definitely a place for the super-organized traveler who wants a fantastic experience.
Dietary options: a tasting menu is available, with no à la carte menu option. (see menu)
Prices: $$$

36. 6342 A Le Tole Spaghetteria Pizzeria:
You cannot miss this spot when you are looking for fresh pasta and pizza. My local friends say this is one of the most unassuming spots in Venice, where you’ll feel right at home. It has a cozy vibe that you need after a long day exploring.
As a chef, I am very picky about my pasta and pizza. A Le Tole makes its handmade pasta with a special blend of selected Italian flours and semolina. I can tell by the description that the result is different pasta shapes that perfectly complement their sauces. Their pizza dough is also special. It’s made from Italian wheat and soy flour to create a light and fragrant crust.
My friends tell me they have over 30 pizzas on the menu. I can tell you that the pizza with salami, wild boar ham, buffalo mozzarella, and truffle sounds amazing. So does the smoked ricotta and smoked pancetta pizza. The seafood option sounds incredible as well. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
- A LE TOLE pizza with salami, wild boar ham, buffalo mozzarella, and truffle
- BIANCA FUMÉ with smoked ricotta and smoked pancetta
- MEDITERRANEA with seafood
If you decide to dine here, you may enjoy some live music. Every evening from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., a musician plays a mix of classic and contemporary hits. It is definitely a place to add to your list.
What to order: a le tole pizza, any handmade pasta with the sauce you fancy the most.
Dietary options: vegan, vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$

37. Il Ridotto Restaurant:
Lunch & Dinner Friday and Saturday, other days only dinner, closed on Sunday.
Sometimes we may want to splurge. This is where Il Ridotto comes in. I haven’t dined here yet, but I can assure you that this restaurant is at the top of my list.
It’s located in the Castello district, just a stone’s throw from Piazza San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs. The chef Nicolò Bonaccorsi inherited his love for elegance and good food from his father. This is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of sightseeing.
Il Ridotto is known for a blend of Italian culture, tradition, and innovation. They have an excellent à la carte menu. They also offer a five-course seafood menu for €130 and a seven-course seafood and land menu for €150. I can tell you that just looking at the menu, I would love to taste every single thing on it.
What to order: the seafood and land tasting menu.
Dietary options: vegan, vegetarian, seafood, meat, gluten-free, and lactose-free options. (see menu)
Prices: $$$

Location: Sestiere di Castello.
38. Pietra Rossa:
Lunch & Dinner, Tuesday only Dinner, closed Monday and Wednesday.
I’ve found a special spot for you. There is a legend that Pietra Rossa is nestled in a magical part of Venice, where the plague of 1630 is said to have stopped. You are supposed to feel safe there. It is located in the Castello district. This is one of the most genuine and authentic parts of the city.
This beautiful spot is the latest project by Andrea Lorenzon. He already owns another great restaurant, CoVino, which is on my list. Pietra Rossa is a place where you can discover the joy of contemporary Venetian cuisine that respects the land while embracing a playful spirit. Andrea’s goal is to keep this part of the city vibrant and alive.
The menu is a foodie’s dream. You will find zero-kilometer vegetables from the island of Sant’Erasmo. The dishes are not divided into starters, mains, or desserts. Instead, they are arranged from most delicate to most complex.
The menu changes with the seasons or based on market availability. This chef’s creative freedom is exactly what I would love to see as a chef myself. This is a must-add for your list.
What to order: the menu changes with the season.
Dietary options: seafood options. (see menu)
Prices: $$

39. Trattoria Bandierette:
Lunch & Dinner, open every day.
I’m the queen of getting lost in a good way. That’s exactly how my husband, Lajos, and I stumbled upon Trattoria Bandierette, right near the square outside the beautiful San Giovanni e Paolo church. We already had a reservation at a different restaurant with a fantastic view of Venice that night, but my chef instincts told me this place was a true gem, so I saved it for another time.
It is no wonder that it’s a local favorite; you have to book well in advance. This spot has an excellent price-quality ratio, whether you choose a table inside or on their terrace. The menu features delicious local dishes of Venice, along with meat and vegetarian options to satisfy all your travel mates.
This is a true local spot, not a tourist trap. Many travelers love dining here so much that they keep coming back during their vacation in venice. This is the kind of experience my lovely, anxious traveler can rely on to feel completely relaxed.

40. Osteria alle Testiere:
Lunch & Dinner, closed Sunday and Monday.
Lajos and I absolutely love Ristorante Alle Testiere, and we constantly recommend it to all our friends. They always have new dishes to try, but they also keep a few of their signature Venetian ones. This is my place to eat.
They only have eleven tables, and they do not even have a freezer. The team here does its best to follow the seasons and work only with the freshest fish from the Adriatic. They have trusted suppliers at the Rialto market that they buy from every day.
Osteria alle Testiere is one of the best restaurants to eat in Venice and is the kind of high-quality dining experience that will make you feel like a true local. It is the perfect spot for any of my lovely, anxious travelers who want to find a fantastic meal without any stress.

Restaurants in Giudecca Island in Venice
41. Trattoria Ai Cacciatori:
Lunch & Dinner, Tuesday only dinner, closed on Monday.
Getting to Trattoria Ai Cacciatori is a mini-adventure in itself. You just take a short ferry ride from the main island to the island of Giudecca, and there it is. Located right on the waterfront, this quaint trattoria is a cozy spot to enjoy a local lunch or dinner.
While the menu focuses on traditional Venetian cuisine with a strong emphasis on seafood, the authentic atmosphere was my favorite part. The portions were also generous, and the prices quite reasonable. We loved that it was only a short walk from the beautiful Church of the Holy Redeemer.
This is the kind of restaurant where you can relax and enjoy the moment. For even more fantastic ideas, you should check out my complete guide on the best restaurants with a view in venice.
