Which Greek island has the most tourists?
Santorini island is the most visited island in Greece, with its 2 million tourists choosing it as a holiday destination. Most people visit Santorini during a Greek cruise, so they don’t have the chance to explore it as it deserves.
Many tourists or travelers only visit the most important towns on the island, the famous Fira and Oia. They are stunning, on top of a cliff, but many more areas of Santorini are well worth a visit.

Which Greek island is the least touristy?
It’s tricky to name the single least touristy island, as “least touristy” is relative and depends on the time of year. However, here are a few Greek islands that generally see fewer crowds compared to popular destinations like Mykonos or Santorini:
- Anafi: This tiny island near Santorini is surprisingly quiet, with a population of less than 300. It offers a peaceful escape with beautiful beaches and hiking trails.
- Kimolos: Located near Milos, Kimolos is often overlooked by tourists. It boasts lovely beaches, charming villages, and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Amorgos: Known for its rugged landscapes and hiking trails, Amorgos attracts more nature lovers than party crowds. It’s a great choice for those seeking tranquility and outdoor activities.
- Astypalea: This butterfly-shaped island in the Dodecanese offers stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and a laid-back vibe. Despite having an airport, it remains relatively undiscovered.
- Lemnos: Located in the North Aegean, Lemnos is a bit more difficult to reach, which helps keep the tourist numbers down. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, unique landscapes, and opportunities for water sports.
12 Must Visit Greek Islands for Holidays in the Sun

1. Kos island:
Oh honey, pack your cutest sundress and sense of adventure because we’re island hopping in Greece! Let’s skip the tourist traps (although Santorini, you’re still pretty dreamy) and set sail for Kos, the island where ancient history meets beachside bliss.
Picture this: you’re sprawled beneath a towering palm tree, toes wiggling in warm sand, turquoise waves lapping at your ankles. Sounds like heaven, right? But Kos is more than just a beach bum’s paradise (although that’s reason enough to go!).
Imagine stepping back in time with Roman ruins whispering secrets and ancient Greeks leaving their mark on archaeological sites. Are you feeling zen? Channel your inner Asclepius, the OG doctor-demigod, at the Asclepeion, the world’s first holistic healing center. Need a post-exploration pick-me-up? Thermal springs, local wine tastings, and charming squares lined with shops and restaurants await!
But wait, there’s more! Kos isn’t just for history buffs and vino enthusiasts. Think boat tours to volcanic Nisyros, jeep adventures, and snorkeling expeditions that’ll make your underwater Insta dreams come true. And let’s not forget the medieval magic of the Nerantzia Castle or the ancient agora ruins whispering tales of times gone by.
So ditch the travel anxiety, girlfriend (or boyfriend, hey, no discrimination here!), and picture yourself on Kos. It’s the island where relaxation meets adventure, history meets beach vibes, and every corner promises a story waiting to be discovered. Now, who’s ready to book their ticket?
How to get to Kos Island? Kos has an airport that is well-connected to many European cities. You can also reach the beautiful island of Kos after visiting Athens by spending 11 hours on a ferry from Athens port Piraeus or by plane from Athens airport.
Otherwise, there are ferries from Rhodes, Leros, Patmos, and Kalymnos if you prefer to visit other islands before or after. Check out the ferry websites I used to travel to Greece, the best ferry websites to reach the Greek islands.
To learn more about Greece, check out the “Best Guide of Greece,” which contains all the information you need to plan your next dream vacation.
Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips. They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.

2. Santorini island:
Santorini: Where Sunsets & Snaps Collide (But Wait, There’s More than Santorini Sunsets!) Calling all photo fiends and sunset chasers! Santorini, darling, is beckoning with its cliffside towns, volcanic whispers, and enough blue to fill a million Instagram feeds. Santorini is in the Aegean Sea, and it is the Beyoncé of Greece – famous, fierce, and guaranteed to blow up your vacation photos.
But hold on, my anxious travelers; Santorini isn’t just about posing with panoramic views (although, let’s be honest, those caldera snaps are hot!). Imagine strolling through the postcard-perfect towns of Oia and Fira and having dinner in a terrace restaurant atop cliffs that plunge into the sparkling sea.
Catch the legendary sunset – Oia is the queen bee of sunset spots, but be prepared to share the magic (and your selfie stick) with fellow admirers.
Speaking of magic, Santorini’s accommodation options sparkle your travel dreams. Think cozy beachside digs, infinity pools dangling over the caldera, or even private cave pools for ultimate Santorini envy. Whether you’re a party animal, a romance-seeking duo, or a family with beach-loving kiddos, there’s a Santorini haven waiting for you.
And guess what, my lovely anxious travelers? (Have you got my guide to becoming a super-organized traveler yet to fight travel anxiety?) The fun doesn’t stop at sunset pics. Foodies can rejoice with delicious food tours and wine tastings (that famous Santorini vino, swoon!). At the same time, shutterbugs can level up their gram game with romantic photoshoot sessions or guided expeditions to capture Santorini’s hidden gems.
But wait, there’s more! (Didn’t I tell you?) This volcanic stunner also offers epic adventures beyond the lens. Dive into history with day trips to hot springs, volcanic islands, and Thirassia. Saddle up for a horseback ride on the beach, set sail on a catamaran cruise with a BBQ lunch fit for a god (or at least a very hungry influencer), or soak up the golden hour vibes on a sunset cruise – the options are endless, darling!
Remember, Santorini is hotter than a plate of souvlaki in high season, so book those activities and tours in advance. Trust me, you don’t want your FOMO to be as blue as the Aegean Sea. Now, who’s ready to get their Santorini glow on? ️
How to get to Santorini? Santorini has an international airport well connected to most European capitals, but flying to Santorini is pretty expensive compared to flying to Athens or other islands. If you plan to visit other islands before or after Santorini, remember you can fly to Athens, visit the Greek capital (that is worth a visit; two days could be enough), and then do as I did.
I flew to Athens, spent 2 days there, and then caught a ferry to reach Santorini. You can reach Santorini from Athens in 4 -10 hours. Depending on which ferry you choose, the faster, the more expensive. Many islands are easily reached by ferry from Sant orini, like Milos, Kea, Crete, Rhodes, Kasos, Chali, Naxos, Paros, Sifnos, Syros, Mykonos, Ios, and many more.
Greece island hopping Tip: Check out Ferryhopper, the best ferry website to reach the Greek islands. Where you will find all the ferry routes available in Greece.
To learn more about Greece, check out “My Complete Guide to Greece,” where you can find all the information you need to know to plan your next dream vacation.

3. Skiathos Island:
Let’s ditch the crowds of Santorini and Mykonos and set sail for Skiathos, the island where Mamma Mia magic meets midnight Ouzo (because of balance, duh!).
Imagine you’re sprawled on a pristine beach; it tests your camera skills. Crystal-clear waters lap at your toes, the soundtrack is cicadas chirping, and your biggest worry is which shade of turquoise your swimsuit complements best. But Skiathos isn’t just about beach bumming (although, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t?).
Think of quaint villages whispering Middle-Ages secrets, ancient masterpieces begging to be admired, and regional delicacies so mouthwatering that your taste buds will do a Zorba, the Greek dance.
Feeling adventurous? Swap the swimsuit for hiking boots and explore hidden coves on a day cruise. Want romance? Recreate your Mamma Mia moment on a tour of the iconic church in Skopelos. When the sun sets, trade sightseeing for sunset cocktails and lively nightlife, which puts Mykonos to shame.
But wait, there’s more! Remember that “eliminate the swimsuit signs” part? Fear not, fellow sunbather, and remember to pack good aloe vera sunscreen! Skiathos caters to all, with secluded spots perfect for letting your tan lines run wild. So ditch the travel FOMO and picture yourself on Skiathos.
It’s the island where adventure meets relaxation, history meets Mamma Mia vibes, and every corner promises an unforgettable story. Who’s ready to pack their cutest sundress and sense of adventure?
How to get to Skyatos? You can get there by ferry from the mainland ports of Volos, Thessaloniki, Mantoudi, Agios, and Konstantinos. If you come from Athens, you must drive or catch a bus directly to the port of Volos (3.5 hours) and then catch a ferry for Skyatos (1.5-2.5 hours).
To book a ferry, check out all the ferry routes on my favorite website, Ferryhopper.
European Travel Alert! If you are from the US and want to travel to Europe, from 2025 you must complete an ETIAS visa waiver form before your trip and pay the €7 ($7.25) fees. This easy-to-complete form should give you instant approval, but it’s recommended that travelers plan and submit their forms a few weeks before their departure date.

4. Zante/Zakynthos island:
My anxious travelers hold onto your floppy hats because we’re island hopping to Zante, the Greek gem where turquoise waters sparkle and adventure awaits! Zante is where you’ll find Shipwreck Beach, the one you’ve seen plastered on every postcard and travel blog – but trust me, it’s even more breathtaking in person.
Now close your eyes and imagine you’re a perfectly bronzed beach bum, toes buried in warm sand, mesmerized by the crystal-clear water sparkling like a million diamonds. Sounds like pure bliss, right? (Unless you forgot the sunscreen, in which case, oops! I’ve got the most complete beach bag checklist, so check it out).
But Zante is more than just a beach babe’s paradise. Think “Mamma Mia!” vibes with vibrant nightlife, buzzing bars, and boat parties that’ll have you dancing under the stars and feeling more “Mamma Mia!” than “Dancing Queen”? No worries, Zante caters to all types of travelers. Channel your inner foodie with delicious Greek cooking classes or romantic sunset dinners. Explore hidden coves on a boat tour, then unwind with a relaxing stroll along the beach.
And the best part? Ditch the travel anxiety, loves! By being super organized (like your favorite travel blogger! mh mh, me, I hope?!), you can explore Zante with ease. Think ceramic-making workshops to unleash your inner artist, epic road trips to discover secret villages, or thrilling ATV safaris to pump your adrenaline. Check out GetYourGuide and Viator (my go-to travel activity gurus!) for many options – you’ll be surprised how much Zante offers beyond the beach.
So, ditch the stress, pack your sense of adventure, and picture yourself in Zante. It’s the island where relaxation meets excitement, history meets stunning landscapes, and every corner promises an unforgettable experience. Who’s ready to book their ticket and make some Greek island memories?
How to get to Zante? You can get there by plane thanks to its international airport; if you plan to visit another fantastic holiday destination before or after, Zante is well connected by ferry to Kefalonia, Corfu, Patras, and Ithaki.
To book a ferry, check out all the ferry routes on my favorite website, Ferryhopper.
Travel Tip: If you arrive at your Destination too early for your check-in or your departure time is too many hours after your check-out, and you need a place to store your luggage, check out Radical Storage in Greece, a website that shows you all the safe places to keep your bags while still exploring.

5. Naxos island:
Let’s set sail for Naxos, the Cyclades’ hidden gem where emerald mountains meet turquoise waters and ancient secrets whisper in the wind. imagine strolling through the postcard-perfect main town, whitewashed houses stacked like sugar cubes beneath a majestic Venetian castle.
Feeling history buff vibes? Naxos has ancient ruins older than your grandma’s knitting needles! Feeling more “beach bum” than “Indiana Jones”? Dive into endless sandy stretches and tiny coves, each more perfect than the last. Crystal-clear water begging to be explored? Naxos has boat tours galore, ready to whisk you away on an island adventure.
Need your adrenaline fix? No problem! Hike dramatic mountains, explore charming villages, or get your scuba and snorkel in the Aegean’s underwater wonderland.
But don’t worry, relaxation is always on the menu in Naxos. Find your zen on quiet beaches, soak up the sunshine, and sip local wine as the sun dips below the horizon. Remember travel anxiety? Not here, honey!
By being super organized like me (did you get my ultimate guide to becoming a super-organized traveler?), you can plan the perfect Naxos escape – beaches, boat trips, history, adventure, it’s all at your fingertips.
So pack your beach bag, and get ready to fall in love with Naxos, the island with something for everyone (even if that’s napping on the beach with a good book! One of my favorite activities while on a beach). Who’s ready to ditch the stress and make some Naxos magic happen?
How to get to Naxos? From Athens, different ferries will take you to Naxos. The trip can last between 3 and 6 hours, depending on which ferry you choose (remember, the fastest one is always the most expensive). There is also a small airport in Paros (the closest island) or an international airport in Mykonos that is only 1 hour away by ferry.

Ditch the tourist traps and get ready to swoon over Corfu, the Greek island where Venetian charm meets Ionian bliss! This is where cobbled streets whisper secrets; pastel villas line charming squares, and the turquoise sea shimmers like a million scattered sapphires.
Imagine getting lost in the UNESCO-listed old town, a maze of narrow brick roads where every corner reveals a hidden gem. Picture sumptuous villas whispering stories of Venetian nobles, each more Instagrammable than the last.
Feeling peckish? Local food tastings abound, tempting your taste buds with authentic Corfiot specialties. Think melt-in-your-mouth pastitsio, tangy dolmades, and sun-ripened tomatoes that practically sing with flavor.
But Corfu isn’t just for history buffs and foodies. Beach lovers, rejoice! Pristine shores and hidden coves beckon, each more perfect than the last. Imagine spending a day at the beach with the sun warming your skin – pure bliss, right? Feeling more adventurous? Fear not! 7. Hydra Island:
Hydra Island is calling, whispering sweetly, “No cars, pure relaxation,” nothing in your ear! Imagine strolling the quaint harbor of this tiny, romantic island tucked between the sparkling Myrtoan and Argolic Seas. There were no honking taxis, just donkeys clip-clopping and the gentle Aegean breeze carrying the scent of delicious Greek food. Sounds dreamy, right?
Hydra is the perfect day trip from Athens, offering the ideal escape for stressed-out souls like us. Ditch the car (literally, they’re banned!), lace up your walking shoes, or channel your inner child and hop on a donkey for a unique island adventure. 8. Rhodes Island:
Ditch the guidebooks and grab your imagination because we’re jet-setting to Rhodes, the Greek island where ancient myths meet beachside bliss! Forget feeling overwhelmed – you can easily conquer Rhodes by being super organized (like your favorite travel guru!).
As many think about the Greek islands, Rhodes is more than just a beach paradise. Think boat tours whisking you to hidden sea caves, snorkeling adventures where exotic fish become your new besties, and stand-up paddleboarding that’ll make you feel like a mermaid queen.

And let’s not forget the nightlife, honey! Rhodes rocks after dark with buzzing bars and electrifying clubs. If you plan to do some island hopping, remember that Rhodes is connected by ferry to Turkey, Athens, the Dodecanese Islands, the Cyclades Islands, Crete, the Aegean Islands, and also Ikaria and Samos.

9. Mykonos Island:
The famous Mykonos is a cosmopolitan destination where you have your dream vacation. In Mykonos, you can party all night every night and spend hours sightseeing. In its town’s little alleys, you will lose yourself while taking so many pictures that you will run out of battery quickly. There are so many things to do in Mykonos; you could never get bored!

In Mykonos, you can have a super luxury holiday in one of its beautiful villas or resorts. Still, you can also find some lovely bed and breakfasts at a reasonable price, as I did, owned by locals with a fantastic sea view.
If you are traveling on a budget, my advice is to book a place not too close to the main town, where you will surely be able to sleep all night with open windows, far from the noisy parties. You must rent a car to move around or catch the local buses. Remember that Mykonos is not only a party island; it is a beautiful place with much to offer to every kind of traveler, including families.

10. Crete Island:
Ditch the winter blues and grab your swimsuit because we’re island hopping to Crete, the Greek sunshine haven where warm weather is practically a year-round resident! Forget bulky sweaters and sniffly noses – Crete’s the Aegean gem where you can trade snow angels for sandcastles all year.
Imagine you’re snorkeling in crystal-clear waters so turquoise they’ll make your Instagram followers jealous. Every dip is like swimming in a liquid postcard, with colorful fish flitting around like underwater confetti. But Crete’s not just a beach paradise (although, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t go there for the beach?).

11. Kefalonia/Cephalonia island:
Pack your relaxation gear and forget about stress because we’re setting sail for Kefalonia, the Ionian island where turquoise waters whisper secrets and delicious food fills your soul! Forget the thumping bass of party islands – Kefalonia is all about tranquility, romance, and family fun. Imagine curling up on a pristine beach, toes wiggling in the sand, and fresh seafood wafting from a nearby taverna. Pure bliss, right? See a fantastic food tour in Kefalonia!
Dive into hidden coves, each more stunning than the last. Explore dramatic coastlines on a boat tour, feeling the spray of the sea on your face. Want to channel your inner Indiana Jones? You will love exploring the mystical underground lake of Melissani or the otherworldly cave of Drogarati.
And for the foodies? Oh, honey, you’re in for a treat! Imagine succulent seafood caught mere hours before it lands on your plate, the taste of the Aegean bursting with every bite.
Remember that movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”? The one that made everyone swoon over dreamy Greek islands? Well, guess where it was filmed? That’s right, Kefalonia! And if you’re looking for postcard-perfect beauty, don’t miss Myrtos Beach, voted one of the most stunning in the world. Crystal-clear water and lush vegetation – it’s like stepping into a painting.
So ditch the anxiety that can ruin your health and get ready to fall in love with Kefalonia. It’s the island where relaxation meets adventure, deliciousness meets discovery, and every corner promises an unforgettable memory.
How to get to Kefalonia? The best way to get to Kefalonia is by plane, thanks to its airport connection to most leading European cities. Otherwise, if you plan to go there by ferry from the mainland, ferries come from Patras and Kyllini ports. If you would like to get there from Italy by ferry and take your car with you, there are ferries from Brindisi to Kefalonia. The journey lasts 15 hours.
Still, you will spend a day in the middle of the sea, and once you get there, you will have your car to visit the island (this is precisely what my parents did when we met in Kefalonia to spend a week together).

12. Paros Island:
Let me tell you a secret: Santorini is dreamy, Mykonos is wild, but Paros? She’s my Greek island soul mate! I haven’t explored every island paradise yet (working on it!), but trust me when I say Paros is the perfect blend of chill vibes and stunning scenery. Think of it as Mykonos’ quieter, cooler cousin – the same charming whitewashed alleys, minus the crowds and sky-high prices.
Imagine you’re sprawled on a powder-soft beach, toes wiggling in warm sand, turquoise waves making you fall asleep and get all the relaxation you seek. Dive into crystal-clear waters, snorkel amongst colorful fish, or grab a good book and soak up the Greek sunshine (my favorite hobby while on vacation).
Feeling more adventurous? Explore charming villages in rolling hills or enjoy a morning horse ride on the beach. And let’s not forget the picture-perfect alleys! Think Mykonos’ Instagrammable streets, but with prices that won’t leave you needing a second mortgage.
You will forget what the word anxiety means. Paros has it all if you are looking for relaxing beach days, epic hikes, charming villages, and delicious local food. So, get ready to fall in love with this little slice of Greek paradise as much as I did.
How to get to Paros? Many ferries are coming here from Athens, but this island is also (like every Greek island) very well connected to other Cycladic islands. When I went there, I was coming from Mykonos, and then I went to the island of Ios by ferry.
Travel Tip: Most phone providers charge extra fees to use your data plan abroad. If you don’t want to end up paying a fortune to use the internet in Greece, buying an eSIM for Greece on Airalo is the fastest and easiest way to have all the data you need while traveling. Check it out here!
My final thought
So, there you have it, my lovelies, travel anxious! A whirlwind tour of Greek island gems, from postcard-perfect to hidden hideaways. But remember, darlings, choosing your island paradise is like picking the perfect sundress—it all depends on what makes your heart sing!
Craving a taste of Santorini’s volcanic drama and sapphire sunsets? Go ahead, strut your stuff! Longing for Mykonos’s windmills and endless blue-water views? Dive right in!
But if your soul whispers for serenity under olive trees in undiscovered coves, there’s an island waiting to write love letters in your memory.
So, dust off your travel journal, my jet-setting friends, and remember – the perfect Greek island vacation isn’t just about the destination; it’s about finding the one that makes you say, “Opa! This is exactly where I belong!” Now, go forth and conquer, and don’t forget to send me a postcard (metaphorical or otherwise) from your Aegean adventure!
