1. List all the places you and your travel mate (if you have one) have already been to, and list all the destinations you would like to visit.
In this way, you will have an idea of all the places both of you have been to (if you are not going alone) and the countries you already know. Writing this list will make you remember these holidays, and they will help you understand better which kind of holiday you are dreaming about.
2. How many days do you have?
Are you thinking of going away just for a weekend break because you need an escape from the routine, or do you have a proper holiday time of 2 weeks or something in between?
Because depending on which part of the world you live in and the season you are planning your holiday, not all the destinations will be a good deal.
3. Who is gonna be your travel mate?
This is very important because as a solo traveler you can decide to go wherever you want and do not have to compromise with anybody (unless we are talking about the weather..well, in that case, I wish you only sunny days).
If you are going with kids, it has to be a kid's friendly spot (will it be easy for you to go on a 12 days tour with your young kids? think about it) or if you are going with a group of friends, make sure to listen to everybody's opinion or ideas.
4. When are you going?
The weather is significant, so make sure to plan a destination that will suit all your preferences and needs. Some people like to walk for hours exploring a city in winter, and others prefer to do it in the warmer seasons.
Need a bit of sunshine in the middle of winter? If you live in northern Europe like me, it would be pretty impossible to get a good tan in December just going down to the coast, so make sure that your dream holiday spot can offer you what you are looking for.
5. What do you need or want from this holiday?
Are you going on holiday because you need to relax? Are you dreaming about a place to spend your whole vacation on a beach, reading that novel you bought months ago and spending hours playing in the water with your friend or partner, or are you craving to explore a new city/country and walk 10 hours a day?
These are very important questions you need to ask yourself and your travel mate.
6. What is your budget?
Knowing how much you can spend is always an excellent way to plan a trip. Always make sure to have more money than you need because anything can happen while abroad, and you always have to be prepared for unexpected events.

7. How would you like to travel?
Do you prefer a backpacking journey, a budget one, or a mid-range, or can you afford a luxury one?
When I started to travel by myself, I loved to stay in Hostels because it was cheap and also gave me a chance to meet other solo travelers, but now I need to have more comfort (Am I getting older?), so I always opt for an apartment or a Hotel.
8. Do you like to stay in an apartment, or do you prefer a Hotel?
I stayed in private apartments and hostels on my Scotland tour because I was traveling with two friends, so we didn't need extra comfort or a romantic venue.
Instead, when I went to Greece, I preferred to choose boutique hotels with a sea view because I was traveling with my boyfriend.
Which accommodation suits you better?
9. How do you want to move around?
Do you prefer to stay at one vacation spot and purchase a holiday package and explore the area by walking and using public transport, or do you prefer to book a tour and see more places?
Do you want to move between destinations by bus or train, or do you fancy renting a car like me?
Time of the Result
After answering all these questions, you will know where you would like or which destination will better suit you and your travel mates' expectations.
I am sure you don't want to go back home thinking you need a holiday to rest because you walked 20 km per day and planned neither one day to rest.
