Spain Vacation 2026: How to Plan Your Trip to Spain
Hola, mis amigos aventureros! (Hello, my adventurous friends!) Ever dreamt of getting swept away by the vibrant energy of flamenco dancers, the sun-kissed shores of the Balearic Islands, or the rich tapestry of Spanish history whispering through ancient castles?
Spain will surprise you with its irresistible charm, mouthwatering cuisine, and culture as warm and sunny as its beaches.

Everything You Need to Know for your trip to Spain
Time Zone:
Did you know that Spain is located in the Central European Time Zone? That means it is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +1). During the summer months, Spain observes daylight saving time, which means the clocks are moved forward by 1 hour.
This puts Spain two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2). But don’t worry—during the winter months, the clocks in Spain are shifted back one hour to Central European Time. These time changes happen on the last Saturday of March and the last Saturday of October each year. I hope that helps!r.
Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips. They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.

Currency:
Did you know that Spain’s official currency is the euro? While cash transactions are still quite common, many shops and merchants in Spain also accept card payments. So, if you’re traveling there, don’t worry about carrying too much cash! Remember that Visa and Mastercard are more widely accepted than American Express.
Vaccinations:
You should ask your family doctor before traveling to Spain and ensure you receive the appropriate vaccinations. Ensure you’re up to date on recommended vaccinations for your home country.
European Travel Alert! If you are from the US and want to travel to Europe, from 2025 you must complete an ETIAS visa waiver form before your trip and pay the €7 ($7.25) fees. This easy-to-complete form should give you instant approval, but it’s recommended that travelers plan and submit their forms a few weeks before their departure date.

Voltage and Adaptors:
The standard voltage in Spain is 220-240 volts. Most of the sockets are European plugs of the two round-pin varieties. I recommend you buy a universal travel adaptor. You will need a voltage converter and plug adaptor to use other appliances.
Travel Tip: If you arrive at your destination too early for your check-in or your departure time is too many hours after your check-out, and you need a place to store your luggage, check out Radical Storage in Spain, a website that shows you all the safe places to keep your bags while still exploring.

Going from the Airport to your accommodation
It is always wise to check how to get from the Airport to your accommodation. There are always many ways to choose from. There are shuttle buses that go to the city center and train lines, or you can book a private taxi in advance that will take you to your accommodation.
In every article, “EHow to plan a trip to (a city),” I listed all the ways to go from that specific city airport to the city center and how to move around. So far I have written about Barcelona, but many more cities are coming.
By Bus: You can travel by bus, every city is very well connected, and in every place, there is a bus company to get around. I always advise booking bus tickets in advance to plan your holiday as best as possible.
By Train: Not every Spanish Airport has a connection to the central city by Train, but luckily, most have it. I always use Trainline while traveling in Spain; it is an excellent website for booking train tickets.
By Taxi: Once you’ve touched down in sunny Spain, pre-booking a taxi is the quickest and most convenient way to whisk yourself away to your charming hotel or relaxing beachside retreat. This way, you can skip the hassle of navigating public transportation or hailing a cab with your luggage in tow and sink into the comfortable backseat, ready to begin your Spanish adventure!
Disclaimer: This article contains some general information about natural remedies. Before using any of the items featured here, it is strongly recommended that you consult a medical practitioner to check that it is appropriate. This is particularly important if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have an existing medical condition, and/or are taking prescription drugs.
Are tap water and food safe in Spain?
Now, let’s talk about agua (water)! While drinking from the tap and public fountains is generally safe, especially in bigger cities and parks, sometimes a señorita (lady) like me wants to be extra cautious.
So, I always carry my trusty reusable bottle as I explore. But don’t worry, if you’re unsure, ask a local or grab a bottle of agua embotellada (bottled water) for peace of mind.
Now, on to the good stuff: ¡La comida! (The food!) Spain is a foodie paradise; the only real struggle you’ll face is having eyes bigger than your estómago (stomach). Confession time: I tend to eat with my eyes and sometimes indulge a little too much. That’s why I always pack some milk thistle tablets.
But hey, even the best-laid plans can go awry. Sometimes it’s not the food, but our stomachs just need to adjust to a new culinary adventure (and let’s be honest, we all tend to eat and drink more than usual on vacation!). So, if you experience a little stomach upset, don’t fret! Some great natural remedies always help me while traveling.

My favorite Natural remedies for stomach upset or food poisoning: Always ask your doctor if you can take any medicine, even when natural.
Milk Thistle: is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms associated with occasional over-indulgence of food and drink, such as indigestion and upset stomach. Milk Thistle is an excellent natural remedy to have when traveling.
Charcoal capsules: recent studies prove that charcoal can be a good help if you eat something that is not good and can prevent diarrhea.
Probiotics: These are a tremendous help while having food poisoning. I take them as soon as I start to have symptoms and after, for at least a couple of days. My doctor advises me to start taking them some days before my travel, as a prevention, in case I visit a country where water and food can be easily contaminated.

Eating and Drinking Out in Spain:
In Spain, you will find a wide variety of food, from meat to fish. You won’t find only the typical Spanish cuisine because every city and region has different dishes to try.
Check out my Complete Guide of Spain to see all the places I have written about so far (more content is coming) and read my articles about what to eat and where to eat typical food in that specific city, where I also listed some suggestions whether you are looking for a place to eat on a budget, mid-range or a fine-dining restaurant.
You will find everything you need about the delicious typical cuisine there. Prices may vary from bar to restaurant also from where the place is located if near a famous and tourist spot or a bit further, but these are the approximate prices for the most common foods and drinks in Spain:
In Supermarket
- Bottle 1.5 L water: around 0.40-0.50 Euro
- Local Beer 0.33 L: approximately 1.50 Euro
- Bottle of Wine: 5-10 Euro
At a Bar:
- Coffee latte: 1.50 Euro
- A glass of 0.5 L Beer: around 1.50-2.00 Euro
- A bottle of wine: 12-20 Euro
- Coke in a Can: Around 2.00-2.50 Euro
- A glass of Wine: Around 3.50-6.00 Euro
At a Restaurant:
- Restaurant on a budget per person: Around 20 Euro. You can eat at a tapas bar for only 6 euros. It all depends on how many tapas you need to fill your stomach.
- Restaurant medium-range per person: Around 40-60 Euro
- Fine dining Restaurant per person: From 80 Euro
Tipping Guide in Spain:
Before you add any gratuity, make sure to check your bill first. In some cases, a 10-20% gratuity is already included, especially in touristy areas. But if you don’t see a gratuity added, a tip of 10-15% is recommended based on the level of customer service you received.
Remember, the amount you choose to tip is entirely up to you and should reflect the quality of service you experienced.

Cost of Travelling around Spain:
While Spain is a world-famous destination, that doesn’t mean it has to break the bank. Here’s the secret, my fellow adventurers: timing is everything!
Think beyond the peak summer months of June to August, when things can get toasty, crowded, and, yes, a bit pricier. Instead, set your sights on the shoulder seasons, from October to April. This is when you’ll find flight deals that could make your jaw drop (remember that incredible €60 roundtrip ticket I snagged from Trieste to Barcelona? It was pure magic!).
And the best part? Spain caters to every budget when it comes to accommodation. From charming hostels to luxurious beachfront havens, there’s something for everyone. My secret weapons? Booking.com and Agoda. These websites are my go-to for finding incredible deals, so you can spend less on your stay and more on those delicious tapas crawls (guilty as charged!).
Sometimes, piecing together flights, accommodation, and activities can feel like solving a giant puzzle, and let’s be honest, who needs that kind of stress before a relaxing vacation?
Here’s a little secret weapon in your travel arsenal: multi-day tours in Spain! These beauties take all the guesswork out of your trip, leaving you free to focus on what truly matters – soaking up the Spanish sunshine, indulging in delicious tapas crawls, and filling your camera roll with stunning memories.
Imagine this: a meticulously planned itinerary, comfortable transportation between cities, and charming hotels chosen just for you. All you have to do is pack your sombrero (hat), a smile that stretches from ear to ear, and get ready to be swept away by the magic of Spain!
Shopping and Souvenirs in Spain:
From high-street favorites like Zara and Mango to the iconic Manolo Blahnik, you’ll find the perfect pieces to update your wardrobe and turn heads back home. Imagine the compliments you’ll receive in that show-stopping dress you snagged in Madrid!
But Spain isn’t just about clothes. Foodies, get ready to have your taste buds tantalized! Stock up on gourmet goodies like the finest olive oil, delectable cheeses from various regions, and the legendary Jamón Ibérico. Fancy reliving your culinary adventures back home? Grab some spices and recreate those delicious dishes you savored during your trip.
And let’s not forget the artistic side of Spain! Stunning handmade ceramics, vibrant paintings, and other unique crafts make the perfect souvenirs to bring back a piece of Spanish magic for yourself or your loved ones.
Is Spain safe for a solo female traveler?
While Spain is generally considered safe, let’s be honest, even the sunniest destinations can have a few shady characters lurking in the shadows. During the daytime, with bustling streets filled with locals and fellow adventurers, the most common concern is pickpocketing, which unfortunately plagues many tourist cities worldwide.
That’s why I always swear by my trusty anti-theft purse or backpack. Remember, even in the world’s most charming corners, a little precaución (caution) goes a long way.
Now, as night falls, things can get a little different, especially for solo female travelers. While I wouldn’t want to paint a picture of constant danger, keeping your eyes peeled is always a good idea. After all, bad things can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. So, seguridad (safety) first, my lovely anxious travelers!
My first solo trip to southern Spain was an absolute dream. Over 22 magical days, I ventured through charming towns and met some fantastic locals. I connected with them through travel Facebook groups; luckily, some kind souls even offered to show me around their city. Needless to say, exploring after dark felt much safer with friendly faces by my side!
How to book transports in Spain:
When I plan a trip, I always make sure to have a well-planned trip. I am not talking about planning where to be and at what time of the day because traveling is pleasant to be spontaneous but not too much if you know what I mean.
I like to book everything in advance, like accommodation, flights, airport shuttles, and train tickets, because I have learned during my travels that the sooner, the better.
I save a lot of money and time by booking things in advance. Also, if you research at what time the train or bus is due to depart, you will make sure you don’t end up without a train to reach your next destination and having to wait until the day after.
Where to book Bus Tickets in Spain?
There is also this way to travel around Spain, cheaper than the train but not so fast, so it all depends on how much time you have and your budget. Sometimes if there is no train there is a bus so if you are looking to buy some tickets, I advise you to do it on Omio, where you can also buy train tickets.
How to Book Train Tickets in Spain?
An excellent website for buying train tickets in Spain is Trainline, where you can check all the trains available and book your tickets in advance. I always use it when traveling in Spain, and it is a great website.

How to Rent a Car in Spain?
If you like driving like me, you can always rent a car, and in this case, I always look at my favorite rental car websites and see where I find the best deals. Have a look at them here:
EconomyBookings provides an extensive collection of rental cars, with over 20,000 rental shops in 150 countries. Many of these shops are conveniently located near airports, allowing travelers to rent a car immediately after arrival and avoid additional transportation costs.
Rentalcars: Rentalcars.com is an international car rental booking service that is present worldwide and where I often find incredible deals for car rentals for my travels.
Bikesbooking: If the weather is nice, why not enjoy the beauty of Spain driving a nice scooter or a bicycle without the issue of finding a parking space?

How to Book Tours and Activity in Spain:
If you want to check what attractions or museum tickets to buy to visit a Spanish city, look at my article about what to see in that specific city.
For museums or other activities, I always check three different websites. The first one is Tiqets, where you can buy every ticket in advance.
Suppose you are looking for a guided tour, museum tour, food tour, or a day trip outside to explore what this fantastic country offers. In that case, I advise you to check out GetYourGuide and Viator, my favorite websites where I find every kind of tour or book for an activity or museum in Spain.

Is it easy to find wifi in Spain?
You won’t have any problems finding wifi here; it is available and fast in all hotels and most restaurants or bars.
Travel Tip: Most phone providers charge extra fees to use your data plan abroad. If you don’t want to end up paying a fortune to use the internet in Spain, the best solution is buying an eSIM for Spain on Airalo, the fastest and easiest way to have all the data you need while traveling. Check it out here!

IMPORTANT TELEPHONE NUMBERS IN SPAIN

- Local Police 092
- National Police 091
- Civil Guard 062
- Medical Emergency 061
- Fire Brigade 112, 080 or 085
