16 Best Places Where to Eat Local Food in Athens

My lovely travel anxious, ditch the bland hotel buffets and prepare to tantalize your taste buds with the magic of Athenian cuisine! Greek food isn’t just delicious; it’s an experience woven into the city’s vibrant tapestry, and I’m sure you will love it all as much as I did when I visited Athens.

Think melt-in-your-mouth moussaka (one of my favorites, probably because it reminds me of aubergine parmigiana and lasagna), gyros bursting with flavor, and pastries so honey-soaked they’ll make angels sing (and these are very addicted).

But where do you start this culinary adventure? Buckle up, foodies, because I’m taking you on a whirlwind tour of Athens’ tastiest secrets! Start your day like a local at a charming bakery.

Forget the sad toast you can have at home every day – imagine flaky pastries brimming with creamy fillings drizzled with sunshine-kissed honey. Each bite is a love letter to Greek tradition, and trust me, your taste buds will be doing the syrtaki dance.

Feeling more savory? Lunchtime starts with a Greek street food symphony. Gyros spinning on rotisseries, souvlaki sizzling with spices – the aroma alone will have you drooling. Grab a cone, find a sunny spot, and watch the city come alive as you savor each delicious morsel.

But Athens caters to every craving. Craving an indulgent evening? Settle into a cozy taverna, the air thick with the intoxicating scent of grilled meats and tangy feta. Raise a glass of local wine, clink glasses with your travel buddy, and lose yourselves in the slow rhythm of authentic Greek dining.

And for those seeking a touch of elegance, hidden gems await. Imagine candlelit dinners in chic restaurants, each dish a masterpiece for the senses. It’s the perfect ending to a day of exploring, a chance to savor the city’s magic uniquely.

Remember, my anxious travelers, traveling is about immersing yourself in a new culture. And what better way to do that than through food? So ditch the fear of the unknown and dive headfirst into the Athenian culinary adventure. It’s a delicious journey you won’t forget, a taste of Greece that will linger long after you return home.

Now, who’s ready to conquer Athens one bite at a time?

Don’t be shy about chatting with your waiter, they’re the local oracles brimming with insider knowledge! (And yes, they speak English, so fire away with your questions.)

Think of them as your culinary GPS, guiding you away from tourist traps and straight to the hidden gems where Athenians fuel their days.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Where do I even start?” Relax, darling, I’ve got you covered! 16 Best Places to Eat Local Food in Athens

Local food on the go in Athens

1. Ariston Bakery:

The Ariston Bakery has been well-known in Athens since the beginning of 1900; here, you can find local Greek sweets, but it is famous mainly for its savory pies. Here, you can taste the most famous Greek pie (and my favorite), Spanakopita, and many more, like the “best seller” at this Bakery—the Kourou, made with cheese.

It’s up to you which pie you try. Most importantly, you will taste something delicious, made daily with fresh ingredients and, most importantly, local.

Opening Times: Every day from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, it is closed on Sundays.
Address: Voulis 10, Athina 105 62, Greece

2. Zisis, Fish in a cone:

If fish to eat on the go is what you are looking for, I have the best spot for you and your cravings. Zisis in Athens is a little but charming restaurant; they sell fried fish in a paper cone that you can eat while walking or sitting at one of their tables. You can choose to take away many kinds of fish, like sardines, squid, prawns, anchovies, cod stripes, and fish balls.

The price is 7 euros per cone.

If you prefer to sit down and enjoy a proper lunch, then you can still choose to eat one of these fish cones on the list, but they also make several kinds of Greek starters, Greek salads, main courses like pasta with fish, fried cheese, grilled fish and much more.

They also have some local desserts you cannot miss to try.

Opening Times: every day from 11.30 am to 6.30 pm.
Address: Athinaidos 3, Athina 105 63, Greece

3. Falafellas:

If you are vegetarian/vegan or your travel mate is, Falafellas is for you. Here, you will find cheap but delicious food to grab and eat while exploring the area.

They have both falafels and meatballs wrapped in a delicious pita, with the addition of vegetables of your choice, like salads, tomatoes, aubergine, cucumber, tzatziki sauce (this one is made with yogurt so it is not vegan), and spicy sauce. I advise getting all the veggies with both Tzatziki sauce and a bit of spicy sauce. It is delicious!

Regular falafel in pita bread costs 2,80 euros, meatballs 3,30 euros (you can also get the giant size), and a beer costs 1,50 euros. Soft drinks are much cheaper. Here you can have lunch for only 5 euros, not bad at all, and the food is delicious and fresh.

4. Fresko Yogurt Bar:

Because unless you are dairy intolerant/allergic/vegan, you cannot go to Greece and miss trying the delicious Greek yogurt. In this all-white shop called Fresko Yogurt Bar, you can eat the famous Greek yogurt with many different toppings.

They have homemade fruit compote, granola, nuts, fresh fruits, honey, and more to add a twist to your fresh yogurt.

5. Takis Bakery:

If you are looking for a bakery where you get something sweet, savory, and local, this is your bakery. At Takis Bakery, you are going to find both local (like cookies, baklava, cherry pie and much more) and not local sweets (like croissants filled with cream, oh my! too good, I haven’t tried the carrot cake but it looked tempting), all delicious and made fresh daily.

They also have some savory pie and sandwiches if you fancy something savory. Of course, they sell bread if you prefer to prepare your sandwich.

Opening Times: Mon to Fri from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm, Saturday from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, closed on Sunday.
Address: Misaraliotou 14, Athina 117 42, Greece

6. Fillo Food and Coffee:

The Fillo Food & Caffe is a charming cafe that is the best place to relax, rest your legs after walking around Athens, and get one, two, or even better, three slices of different savory pie and a good cup of Greek coffee. They also have sandwiches, salads, and my favorite, Greek yogurt with different toppings.

Opening Times: Mon to Fri 7.00 am to 6.00 pm, Sat 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, Sunday closed.

Address: Karagiorgi Servias 14, Athina 105 62, Greece

Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips.  They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.

Are you looking for a place to get Gyros/Souvlaki in Pita bread? Mikro Politiko is your place; they have it with every kind of meat and falafel (so vegetarian and vegan friendly). They are excellent and cheap; the pork Gyros costs 2.70 euros and comes with all the veggies and sauces inside.

Also available are some appetizers, salads, meat plates like Souvlaki with fries, and much more.

Restaurants on a budget in Athens

8. Vegan Beat:

Yes, a Vegan place. Even if I am not vegan, many travelers are (and also some of my friends), so here is the best vegan place to enjoy everything Greek style without the meat. At Vegan Beat, you will find sandwiches, vegan burgers, vegan Souvlaki, and Vegan Gyros.

Everything is delicious and fresh. Trust me, you will love this place so much that you will keep returning for all your meals.

Address: Perikleous 56, Athina 105 60, Greece

9. Liondi:

Liondi is a traditional Greek restaurant located near the Acropolis. It’s the perfect spot for a tasty lunch or dinner. Here, they have all the typical Greek dishes. I advise ordering some to share with your travel mates (unless you travel alone).

When in doubt, ask your waiter for suggestions; they also make a big plate for two to share with 5 or 6 different dishes (the best way to try different Greek dishes).

Special diet: Vegetarian options.
Opening Time: every day from 12.00 pm to 10.00 pm, closed on Wednesdays.
Address: Makrigianni 19-21, Athina 117 42, Greece.

10. Maiandros:

If you are looking for a taverna to have lunch/dinner with a view of the Acropolis without spending a fortune, this is your place. It is not fine dining with a city view. This is a local Greek taverna with the most traditional food at an excellent price. There are seats inside and outside downstairs and a terrace with fantastic views.

I advise booking a table in advance because the terrace is the area that gets booked faster.

Ps: I always advise avoiding restaurants with pictures on the menu at the entrance, but this one is good and has a stunning view. It is worth a try, in my opinion.

Special diet: Vegetarian options.
Opening Times: every day from 10.00 am to 01.00 am.
Address: Adrianou 47, Athina 105 55, Greece

11. Arcadia:

Located close to the Acropolis, so you can stop there for lunch or dinner, Arcadia restaurant has provided delicious Greek food to tourists and locals since 1977. Here, you will find regional recipes from Arcadia, in the Peloponnese, and some other typical Greek food.

Prices are pretty good to be right in the city center, and both service and atmosphere are perfect for your vacation vibe.

Special diet: Vegetarian options.
Opening Time: every day from 12 pm to 11.30 pm.
Address: Makrigianni 23-27, Athina 117 42, Greece

Welcome to my travel guide, my lovely anxious traveler! Want to know who is behind Valentina’s Travel Guide? Let me tell you more about myself.

12. Efcharis:

Efcharis is a traditional Greek Taverna, where you will find most of the typical Greek food; portions are pretty big and are at an excellent price to be in the city center.

This place has been recommended to me by a local I met in a bar where I stopped for a coffee. She told me that many locals go there, in the city center, and it is an authentic traditional Greek restaurant.

I hope you are going to like it as much as I did.

Special diet: Vegetarian options.
Opening Time: every day from 11.30 am to 12.00 am.
Address: Adrianou 49Α, Athina 105 55, Greece

13. Karamanlidika Tou Fani:

As explained in my other article, “Food and Drinks to Try in Greece“, Greece produces many cured meat and different kinds of cheese. Well, if you love them as I do, Karamanlidika Tou Fani is the perfect place to book one of your lunches or dinners in Athens. It opens at 8.00 am, so it could also be an excellent option for breakfast if you fancy savory food.

This restaurant has so many different types of ham, sausages, and cheese that you need to ask for a mixed plate to try at least some of them (trust me, they have so many that you will not know where to start from).

Opening Time: Mon to Fri from 8.00 am to 11.00 pm.
Address: Sokratous 1, Athina 105 52, Greece.

Service is five stars; it is probably one of the most romantic restaurants in Athens, so if you are traveling with your partner and are willing to pay more than the usual Greek taverna, don’t forget to book this restaurant.

Here, you will be dining right in front of the Acropolis, with a magical view during the day and incredibly romantic at night.

My final thought

This is your passport to Athens’ most delicious secrets. Remember, by fueling your Athenian adventure with these local gems, you’re not just satisfying your taste buds; you’re collecting memories that’ll linger long after you return home.

Think back to those sun-drenched taverna meals, the laughter shared over plates of sizzling souvlaki, and the stories whispered by friendly waiters – these moments make a vacation truly magical. Now, I won’t sugarcoat it – you might end up with a few extra pounds you’ll collect along the way (extra pounds are just happy memories in disguise, right?).

But trust me, every gyro bite, fragrant wine sip, and creamy tzatziki will be worth it. So ditch the diet (temporarily, at least!), grab your stretchy pants, and embark on a culinary odyssey that’ll leave you saying, “Opa!” long after the last dish is devoured. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s a love letter to Greek cuisine, and you’re the story’s star. Bon appetit, darling!
