Muggia is my hometown, a particular town with an Istro-Venetian aspect. Arriving at the picturesque dock with the ferry from Trieste, it seems like a crib, mainly in the evening. The Venetian-style atmosphere catches the eye thanks to the architecture, customs, and gastronomic traditions that show a past shared with the Serenissima Republic.

Lying on the eastern side of the Gulf of Trieste in the northern Adriatic Sea, Muggia is the only Italian port town in Istria, and its harbor hosts a modern 500-berth marina for yachts (Porto San Rocco). Muggia is perfect to visit in every season. If you visit Muggia in the summer, you should spend some time at the beach nearby.

Muggia could be the perfect place to visit if you have only half a day to explore the surrounding area of Trieste because it is so close to the city center. So, make sure to add it to your list of potential Trieste day trips.

How to get there: There is a 30-minute scenic ferry trip across the Gulf from Trieste to Muggia. See the ferry stop here. Alternatively, you can catch bus no. 20 from Trieste city centre.

Best restaurants: Trattoria al Castello (where I worked as a chef for over two years) and Sal de Mar.

Please don’t miss trying the most delicious ice cream at the Gelateria Jimmy inside Muggia’s harbor. Their ice cream is absolutely the best. My favorite flavors are Millefoglie and Pistacchio al Tramonto (Pistacchio sunset).

How to get there: You can go to Grado from Trieste Stazione Centrale by train to Cervignano del Friuli and then by bus to Grado or by direct bus. Renting a car is the best and fastest option.

6. Lignano Sabbiadoro:

If you’re looking for some day trips during summer, Lignano Sabbiadoro is a popular choice if you fancy a day at the beach. Lignan Sabbiadoro is located on a sandy peninsula near the Marano Lagoon, known for its beautiful beaches and pine forests. The long stretch of sandy beach and shallow, clear water make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a day of sun and sea.

I used to go to Lignano Sabbiadoro during the summer (when I was living in Trieste) because of the many disco clubs and beach parties. There you can find some of the best sandy beaches near Trieste.

How to get there: You can get to Lignano Sabbiadoro from Trieste by catching two buses (3 hours of travel) or renting a car (only 1 hour).

7. Tarvisio:

If you’re visiting Trieste and looking to explore the beautiful mountainous region, some day trips to the Italian Alps could be one of the best things to do, and Tarvisio is absolutely a must-visit place. Located in a narrow mountain bowl, Tarvisio is known as the resort queen of the Valcanale, near the border with Austria and Slovenia. This valley is unique because it is said to be the only place in Europe where four languages are spoken: Italian, Friulano, German, and Slovenian.

Tarvisio is surrounded by the stunning Foresta di Tarvisio, one of the largest forests in Italy. With its picturesque landscapes, Tarvisio offers the perfect setting for various mountain activities. Make sure to visit Mount Lussari, where a magical view awaits you. It looks like a postcard up there, so take advantage of it if you visit Tarvisio.

How to get there: You can drive to Tarvisio from Trieste in two hours. By public transport, it will take you almost 5 hours.

8. Laghi di Fusine / Fusine Lakes:

If you want a beautiful natural getaway, consider visiting the Fusine Lakes. These two glacial lakes, known as Lago di Fusine Superiore and Lago di Fusine Inferiore, are located north of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, near Tarvisio and the borders of Austria and Slovenia.

Surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, the Fusine Lakes offer a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy a peaceful retreat, one of the best day trips for the nature lover.

How to get there: You can go to Fusine Lakes by car in 2 hours. Avoid public transport, it would take you too long.

If you’re visiting Trieste in October, consider a trip to Venzone. This charming village boasts a lovely historic center with medieval buildings and old churches. One of the unique attractions in Venzone is the discovery of 42 mummies, adding an intriguing element to its history.

I have been to Venzone many times, and I love it. I have always been there on the fourth weekend of October, where I had the opportunity to experience the magical Venzone pumpkin festival.

This festival transforms the village into a medieval dream, offering delicious homemade dishes featuring pumpkins (gnocchi and ravioli come to me) and entertaining medieval shows.

How to get there: You can get to Venzone from Trieste by car in only one hour’s drive or by train and bus in two hours.

14. Jesolo Lido:

Jesolo Lido is the most well-known summer holiday destination in the Veneto region. It’s where I worked for two summers as a chef at Hotel Le Soleil and have some of the best memories of my youth (I was 20-21 years old, and I went to parties every single night and listened to the best DJs of that time, it was terrific, like Ibiza style).

Jesolo Lido is the perfect place to spend a day at the beach, relax, and attend beach parties at Capannina Beach. I do not recommend visiting it during cold seasons; summer is perfect.

How to get there: You can go to Jesolo Lido from Trieste by car in less than two hours. By public transport in almost three hours so it’s not worth it.

Best restaurant: Osti in Ombra is the perfect place to eat delicious fresh fish and taste the local dishes.

15. Bohinj Lake:

Bohinj is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia (approx. 4km in length). It is located in the Julian Alps in a stunning landscape. It rivals Lake Bled for the title of Slovenia’s most beautiful lake. You will love to go to Lake Bohinj for its unspoiled nature, enjoy crystal clear emerald-green water, and relax in its picturesque natural view.

Piran is a beautiful town overlooking the Adriatic coast of Slovenia, and it is a real jewel made of narrow streets that open into beautiful squares. That’s why the city is known as Slovenian Venice.

Piran is one of my favorite towns near Trieste Italy and it is also where I got married in the summer of 2023, in front of the beautiful church of San Bernardin. We had dinner on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Bernardin, and everything was perfect!

Piran will please you with its perfectly maintained historic center and Gothic architecture; you will have the impression of walking inside a work of art. Booking a walking tour with local wine and food tasting could be the perfect way to explore this little jewel in Slovenia.

Ljubljana is among the smallest capitals in Europe. Thanks to the university students who give it a youthful charm, there are many things to do in Ljubljana. As Slovenia’s economic and cultural center, it has a lot to offer both locals and visitors.

Ljubljana is a perfect blend of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian cultures. The old town blends Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings watched over by a medieval castle.

23. Vintgar Gorge:

If you’re visiting Trieste and looking for a beautiful natural attraction to explore, consider taking a trip to the Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled in Slovenia (I went there a couple of times with my family when I was a kid, and I loved it).

This stunning gorge features crystal clear waters, breathtaking waterfalls, and picturesque boardwalks that span a 1.6 KM trail along the Radovna River (make sure to visit it in spring when the gorge is full of water).

How to get there: You can get to Vintgar Gorge from Trieste by car in less than two hours drive.

If you want a thrilling day trip while in Trieste, consider visiting Bovec. Known for its stunning natural beauty and exciting outdoor activities, Bovec offers attractions such as the Soca Lake, perfect for a relaxing day in nature or adrenaline-filled adventures like the Rafting Tour on Soca River, enjoying the biggest zip line park in Europe, and canyoning.

Whether seeking a peaceful escape or an action-packed adventure, Bovec has something for everyone. So, look at all the activities in Bovec and book the right one for your super fun day in Slovenia.

How to get there: You can go from Trieste to Bovec, Slovenia, in a two-hour drive. There is no direct public transport available.

Day Trips from Trieste to Croatia

The Croatia border is only 37 km from the Trieste city center, so it is normal for locals to have a day trip to Croatia, mostly during summer, to enjoy the stunning beaches and crystal clear water.

25. Porec:

If you wonder what to see around Trieste, visiting Porec is a great choice. It is one of my favorite coastal towns in Istria, Croatia. Porec is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. One of the main attractions in the town is the Episcopal Complex of Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In addition to that, you can also explore a Roman temple, medieval town walls, and fortresses, as well as admire the beautiful Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque palaces. There is plenty to see and experience in Porec, making it a worthwhile destination for a day trip.

This ancient amphitheater is a historical site and a venue for various events and performances. If you visit Pula during the summer as I did, you’ll have the opportunity to relax on stunning beaches and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

From here, you can easily add some of Croatia’s must-have experiences to your itinerary too, from sailing along the Dalmatian coast and stopping in little coves for a swim, to ending the day with fresh seafood in a tiny harbor town.

The city is one of the most popular departure points for island-hopping adventures, giving you access to crystal-clear bays, charming port towns, and incredible sunsets on the Adriatic.

If you’re looking for a more premium experience, options like Sail Croatia Elegance cruises offer a stylish and comfortable way to discover Croatia, complete with attentive service, boutique ships, and beautifully crafted itineraries. It’s easily one of the top things to do if you want to experience the country from the water.

How to get there: You can reach Pula by car from Trieste in less than two hours. There are buses from Trieste to Pula, but it will take you more than three hours to get there, so I recommend taking the bus only if you plan to stay overnight.

Best restaurant: For a light lunch in Pula, I went to Hook & Cook for some local fish, and for dinner, Veritas Food & Wine is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a summer evening.

28. Premantura:

If you’re looking for a day trip during the summer, consider visiting Premantura and exploring the stunning Cape Kamenjak National Park. Located just 20 minutes south of Pula, this small peninsula offers over 30 km of coastline, pristine blue waters, hidden coves, and 23 beautiful beaches. It’s the ideal destination for a relaxing day at the beach and a great way to escape the city and enjoy nature, maybe with a snorkeling boat tour or a sea cave kayak tour.

I went there for three days with Lajos and my parents, and we loved it. The water is crystal clear, and there are pine forests where you can nap in the shadows or read a novel as I always do.

How to get there: You can get to Premantura by car from Trieste in only two hours. Unfortunately, there is no public transport available.

Best restaurant: Konoba Ancora is the perfect place to eat local Croatian food.

How many days should I spend in Trieste?

The Trieste city center is small, so you can easily visit it in a few days (eating in the best local places and visiting museums included). If you have only one day in Trieste, I wrote a complete Trieste in a one-day itinerary.

But if you want to explore the area around this fantastic city, like the caves and towns, I recommend you stay between 4 and 5 days. Remember that Trieste is very walkable, so you can explore it on foot.
