Don’t worry, my anxious traveler; your super-organized travel fairy godmother is here! Now, Mykonos isn’t exactly known for its budget-friendly tavernas, but fear not, penny-pinching princess!
With my handy tips and a sprinkle of planning magic, you can absolutely experience the Mykonos magic without being a millionaire (Yes, you read that right; even on a shoestring budget, you can still sip cocktails with a sunset view as I did last summer!)
However, unlike some Greek island cousins, Mykonos likes its creature comforts, so things can get pricier. But don’t let that scare you away!
By booking way in advance (think months, not weeks) and avoiding the peak summer months (July and August are when prices go kapow), you can snag amazing deals and still have the vacation of your dreams (which we had because we went to Mykonos in September and avoided all the crowds).
Remember, sometimes a little planning goes a long way, and trust me, your future self will thank you when you’re sipping that ouzo on a beach chair, feeling like a millionaire (even if your bank account tells a different story).

How to plan the best Mykonos holiday
Time Zone:
Did you know that Greece is located in the Eastern European Time Zone and is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +1)? During the summer months, Greece observes daylight saving time, which means that the clock moves forward by one hour, making Greece three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +3).
But don’t worry, in the winter months, the clock is moved back by one hour to Eastern European Time. These changes happen on the last Saturday of March and the last Saturday of October, so make sure to keep that in mind when planning your trip to Greece!
Currency:
If you plan a trip to Mykonos, it’s good to know that the official currency is the Euro. Carrying cash with you is best to ensure a hassle-free shopping experience, especially when visiting smaller shops or tavernas. I am sure you want to avoid finding the perfect Greek souvenir and not having the cash to buy it.
Many shops in Mykonos accept Visa and Mastercard payments. However, American Express is not widely accepted.
Vaccinations:
You should ask your family doctor before traveling to Mykonos and ensure you receive the appropriate vaccinations. Just ensure you’re up to date on recommended vaccinations for your home country, and look at The Travel Vaccines and Advice.

Voltage and Adaptors:
The standard voltage is 220-240 volts. Most of the sockets are European plugs of the two round-pin varieties. I cannot imagine traveling without my universal travel adaptor. Remember you will need a voltage converter and plug adaptor to use other appliances.
If you love styling your chain while on vacation, a good idea is to purchase a Travel hair tools kit dual voltage for Eu and America you can use in all your travels.
Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips. They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.
How to get to Mykonos:
Mykonos has one international airport connected to most of the biggest European cities. Many airlines connect Mykonos with the rest of Europe. Otherwise, if you prefer to get to the mainland by train or bus, check on Omio for the best solution.
You can also get to Mykonos by ferry from Athens (as I did) or other islands. It all depends on where you want to go before Mykonos. Some tourists prefer to spend all their holiday on this beautiful island while others, like me, prefer to visit more places before and after.

Going from Mykonos Airport to your accommodation:
It is always wise to check how to go from the airport to your accommodation. There are always many ways to choose from. To go from Mykonos airport to your accommodation, I highly recommend you book a private taxi in advance because, unfortunately, Mykonos has only 30 taxis available, so it could be challenging to get one.
Otherwise, you can catch a bus outside the airport to the Fabrika bus station in Chora (the main town) and then catch a bus to your destination.
Buses all start their journey from Fabrika bus station and reach every part of the island and all the famous beaches. A bus ticket costs only 1.50 euros. I always think booking a private transfer from the airport to the hotel is better. So, you can start your holiday right upon arrival and save time and energy.

Kiwitaxi: is a site where one can book a transfer to get from or to the airport in 98 countries, between tourist destinations or other locations popular with tourists. Check here for prices and availability.
Rent a Car in Mykonos: If you like driving like me, you can always rent a car. In my opinion, it was the best way to visit his island. In this way, I visited all the best beaches in Mykonos, and I didn’t miss a thing I wanted to see. See Mykonos rental car prices.
When I visited Mykonos, I met with one of the guys from the rental car at the Ferry Port, where he gave us our car. It was straightforward and fast, so we did not have to look for a car rental; the car came to us.

Are tap water and food safe in Mykonos?
Unfortunately, it is highly recommended to avoid drinking tap water on every Greek island. There are many supermarkets where you can buy bottled water (I know, I’m not too fond of plastic bottles, but otherwise, there are no other ways to drink water while on Mykonos).
I always carry a stainless steel reusable water bottle everywhere I go so I can fill it up anytime I have the chance (I bought one in pink for me and one blue for Lajos and we love our purchase). But while on the Greek islands, it would be better for you to avoid it. We filled up our reusable bottles with bottled water to keep the water cool all day but avoided tap water.
If you are not sure, it’s always safe to ask locals or, in doubt, to drink bottled water. Remember, you cannot miss trying an original Frappe Coffee in Greece. You can bring a reusable coffee cup to drink on the go or at the beach.
Honestly, Mykonos has so much to offer that the only problem you will have is that your stomach is not big enough to eat everything you wish.
Unfortunately, bad luck happens. Sometimes, it is not the food but our stomach that needs to get used to the new cuisine (and let’s be honest, we all eat and drink more than usual when on holiday). I always take some of these natural remedies if I have stomach upset or food poisoning.

My favorite natural remedies for stomach upset or food poisoning: (Ask your doctor if you can take them).
Milk Thistle: is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms associated with occasional over-indulgence of food and drink, such as indigestion and upset stomach. Milk Thistle is an excellent natural remedy to have when traveling.
Charcoal capsules: recent studies prove that charcoal can be a good help in case you eat something that is not good, and it can prevent you from having diarrhea.
Probiotics: These are a tremendous help while having food poisoning. Take as soon as you start to have symptoms and after, for at least a few days. My doctor advised me to take them some days before my travel, as a prevention, in case I visit a country where water and food can be easily contaminated.

Eating and Drinking Out in Mykonos:

Prices may vary by location and by bars and restaurants. Budget restaurants in Mykonos offer local food at a cheaper price, while sea-view restaurants charge more (but the view is stunning).
These are the approximate prices for the most common foods and drinks in Greece:
In Supermarket
- Bottle 1.5 L water: around 0.70-0.80 Euro
- Imported Beer 0.33 L: around 1.90-2.00 Euro
- Bottle of Wine: 5-8 Euro
At a Bar:
- Coffee latte: 2.80 Euro
- A glass of domestic beer 0.5 L: around 3.00-4.00 Euro
- A bottle of wine: 12-20 Euro
- Coke in a Can: Around 1.70-1.80 Euro
- A glass of Wine: Around 4.00-6.00 Euro
At a Restaurant:
- Restaurant on a budget per person: Around 20 Euro
- Restaurant medium-range per person: Around 50 Euro
- Fine dining Restaurant per person: From 70 Euro

Tipping Guide:
A 10-20% gratuity is often added to the bill in Greek restaurants. Check that you’re not already paying the tip before you add more to your payment. If not, a 10-15% tip is encouraged, mostly in tourist places. The tip should reflect the customer service you received, so it is up to you to decide how much to give.
Cost of Travelling in Mykonos:
Mykonos is a famous island, but you can visit it on a budget if you plan your trip with a budget in mind and plan it a lot in advance. I advise you to avoid it from June to August when it can be scorching, crowded, and more expensive.
Flights to Mykonos can be cheap from October to May, but many hotels and restaurants are closed from November to March.
In Mykonos, you can find accommodations for every budget. The website I love the most for finding amazing deals is Booking.com, which allows you to find and compare worldwide hotel prices provided by leading reservation systems.
I like that in Greece, you can have lunch for only 5 Euros and end up feeling very satisfied.
Shopping and Souvenirs:
The options are limitless in a cultural country like Greece, and you will find many shops selling arts and crafts wherever you go. Locally hand-crafted ceramics, wood carvings, textiles, and jewelry are perfect as souvenirs from Greece. If you want to buy antiques, please be careful, beware of fakes, and stick to reputable sellers.
Also, liquors and food are excellent ideas to take home with you, like Ouzo, the famous anise-flavored spirit, honey, herbs for cooking like thyme or oregano, olive oil, which is delicious in Greece, and olives.
European Travel Alert! If you are from the US and want to travel to Europe, from 2025 you must complete an ETIAS visa waiver form before your trip and pay the €7 ($7.25) fees. This easy-to-complete form should give you instant approval, but it’s recommended that travelers plan and submit their forms a few weeks before their departure date.

Is Mykonos safe for a solo female traveler?
This island is pretty safe. During the day, with tourists and locals around the streets, the only thing you will have to worry about are pickpockets, which can unfortunately be present in every tourist spot. So I advise having an antitheft purse or an antitheft backpack with you. Prudence is never enough when you are far from home, even in the safest place in the world.
Remember to NEVER leave your belongings unattended at the beach. Always make sure one of your travel mates keeps an eye on them while you go for a swim. If you travel only with one travel companion, as I often do, ask someone close to keep an eye on them (I usually ask a family or a couple). Even when you swim, stay close to the shore and keep an eye on them.
Overnight, I advise a solo woman traveler always to be careful because bad things can happen anywhere, anytime, to anybody, so please put safety first (and remember, people tend to overdrink in party places like Mykonos).
During my solo travels, I always contacted locals through travelers’ Facebook groups. I have been lucky to meet people who took me around and showed me their city, so I felt pretty safe being out late in the evening because I wasn’t alone. Make sure to follow all my tips on how to visit Mykonos.

How to move around Mykonos:
When I plan a vacation, I always plan a well-planned trip (have you already downloaded my free guide to planning the perfect trip?).
I am not talking about planning where to be at every time of the day while in Mykonos, but if you plan to visit other islands or the mainland, you will find some links below to book anything you need. Because when traveling, it is nice to be spontaneous but not too much, if you know what I mean.
I like to book everything in advance, including accommodation, flights, airport shuttles, bus and train tickets, and ferries, because I have learned during my travels that the sooner, the better. I always save money and time by booking things in advance.
So here are some links that will help you to plan at least the essentials:
Move around Mykonos by bus:
In Mykonos, you can get around using the Mykonian buses. They all start their journey at the Fabrika Station in Chora (the main town), and they go almost everywhere at a low price of 1-3 euros (it depends on where you want to go).
Move around Mykonos by car:
An excellent way to visit Mykonos and the other islands is by renting a car. This way, you can stop whenever you need to go and see all the best places to watch the sunset in Mykonos.
The cost of renting a car in Greece is pretty cheap on most of the islands and mainland but more expensive in Mykonos and Santorini. However, if you want to explore every single beach and little village, like I love to do, the best way to do it is by renting a car.
Otherwise, why not enjoy the beauty of Greece driving a nice scooter or a bicycle without the issue of finding a parking space?
