Only thinking of visiting Barcelona and I dream about beautiful beaches, Gaudí’s whimsical architecture, and the intoxicating scent of churros wafting through bustling streets. But Barcelona offers much more than meets the eye (or nose!). This vibrant city is a treasure trove of cultural experiences waiting to be unearthed by curious travelers like you and me.

Now, I confess, I got a little overwhelmed the first time when I faced a city bursting with museums as incredible as Barcelona’s. I wanted to visit all Barcelona museums.

Picasso masterpieces? Miró’s fantastical dreamscapes? Delving into the city’s rich maritime history? Decisions, decisions! In the end, after four visits, I saw almost all of them. I just revisited Barcelona for the fourth time to show Lajos (my Hungarian husband) why I love this city so much (he obviously fell in love with it, too).

Now, I wouldn’t be your trusty, super-organized travel guide if I didn’t warn you about one tiny detail: Barcelona is a magnet for art and history enthusiasts, which means its museums can get delightfully crowded, especially during peak season.

To avoid any travel-day meltdowns (because who needs those vacation vibes dampened by long queues?), I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance as I always do before a trip. It’s a lifesaver.

Imagine strolling straight past the crowds of eager visitors, a smug smile on your face as you waltz into your museum of choice, ready to delve into the artistic and historical delights within.

So, grab your planning notepad and a glass of cava (real or imaginary, I won’t judge, I promise) because we’re about to embark on a journey through some of Barcelona’s must-visit museums!

1. Barcelona-Gaudi House Museum:

The Gaudi House Museum is located inside the Parc Guell. There, you can admire a collection of objects and furniture designed by Gaudi, who has lived in that house for almost 20 years, from 1906 to 1925.

You must purchase the park entrance ticket to visit the Gaudi House Museum.

2. Barcelona Pavilion:

Or Mies van der Rohe Pavillion, but I think Barcelona Pavilion is easier to remember. This pavilion was initially built as a temporary building to host the German section in 1929 for the International Exposition in Barcelona but was rebuilt in 1986 to become a permanent building. 

It is famous for being an essential modern architectural building made of marble, travertine, and red onyx.

3. Picasso Museum:

The best place to learn about Pablo Picasso’s marvelous art is through his 4,251 works in exposition in this Museum. If you like his art, this is the right place for you.

The line to enter this Museum can be crazy long, so I recommend you book your ticket in advance to skip the line and save time and money. Click here to get your skip-the-line tickets and save time and money.

Picasso Museum is free every first Sunday of the month and Thursday from 6 pm to 9.30 pm, but you have to book your free ticket in advance.

5. MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona:

This contemporary art museum hosts essential works of international artists in temporary and permanent exhibitions. 

The MACBA Museum is Free every Sunday from 4 pm to 8 pm.

6. MNAC, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya:

The Museum of National Art of Catalonia is Barcelona’s biggest and most important. It hosts more than 260,000 works of art. It has the most important collection of Catalan art from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. 

The MNAC Museum is Free every first Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturdays after 3 pm. Remember that the queue will be very long and the Museum will be very crowded.

7. Palau de la Musica Catalana:

The famous Palace of Catalan Music is the most renowned Theatre in Barcelona and is worth visiting. You can enjoy a concert or book a tour and see the inside during the day, of course, they are two different experiences, so it is up to you to choose the best one for you.

I haven’t had the chance to visit the inside yet, but I went to admire the building, which is one of the unmissable places to see in Barcelona. If you plan to visit El Born, stop to admire this incredible theater and have a sweet break at Xurreria laietana, one of the most local breakfast places in Barcelona.

8. Montjuic Castle:

The Barcelona Castle is a must-visit. The view from up there is stunning. You can see the whole city from there and take pretty pictures. There is also a buffet restaurant, some souvenir shops, and an outdoor bar where you can get a sandwich or an ice cream before walking down the hill. 

I suggest you walk straight up to the Castel and then slowly walk down and visit all the museums (or those you like; I honestly saw all of them).

9. Casa Vicens:

Casa Vicens is an actual work of art by Gaudi. It is less known so that you won’t find tourist crowds. It is also the first house built by a famous architect. 

If you don’t have time to visit it, even just seeing the outside will make you fall in love with its beauty. Otherwise, you can book a ticket online here and visit this magnificent building.

10. Erotic Museum of Barcelona:

12. MUHBA, Museum d’Historia de Barcelona:

Or “Barcelona City History Museum,” where you can walk through the heart of the Roman ruins in Barcelona, under Placa del Rei, where you can learn about medieval and ancient Barcelona in a tour around 4,000 square meters in an archaeological site underground.

Free Admission is available every Sunday after 3 p.m. and every first Sunday of the month. This is one of the unmissable places to see in Barcelona, it looks like one of the scenes from Game of Thrones.

We went to see it early in the morning to avoid the crowds before having some of the most delicious pastries of Barcelona at Sant Jordi Forn de pa, one of Barcelona’s best bakeries, which is nearby.

This is a palace dedicated to cannabis, where you can see more than 9,000 cannabis artifacts, learn about cannabis cultivation, and see natural cannabis plants.

This Maritim Museum in Barcelona is excellent, and I highly recommend you visit it if you like boats. I saw it during my first trip to Barcelona, and even if I am not a big boat fan, I found it very interesting.

18. Frederic Mares Museum:

Frederic Mares Museum is one of Spain’s most famous and visited sculpture museums. From 1893 to 1991, he was obsessed with statues and collected them throughout his life. Here, you can see spectacular sculptures from the 12th to 19th centuries.

19. Poble Espanyol:

Poble Espanyol is my favorite place after Montjuic Castle. This is an open-air village where you can see arts, gastronomy, handicrafts, and architecture from every part of Spain. It is a magical place for me; you can feel Andalusia in one place, and as soon as you turn the corner, you are in Gallizia. 

Here, you will admire 117 full-scale buildings, more than 300 contemporary art artworks, boutiques, delicatessens where you can buy delicious typical Spanish food, and more than 20 artisan and craft workshops. You cannot miss it!

20. Moco Museum Barcelona:

25. Castle of the Three Dragons:

The “Castell dels Tres Dragons” was designed and built by the architect Lluis Domenech I Montaner between 1887 and 1888 for the World’s Fair of 1888. Inside it, you can visit the Zoology Museum of Barcelona.

Museu de Carrosses Funebres is a very particular and unusual museum, but it is also very interesting. It features many local funerary customs, ceremonies, and ornate horse-drawn carriages.

35. Museo del Perfume:

This small Museum is charming; you can admire more than 5,000 old-fashioned and vintage perfume bottles and containers.

36. Casa Sayrach:

Another beautiful work of Gaudi; until a few years ago, only residents could enter this building and admire the marvelous main hall. Then, a restaurant opened on the first floor, so now, anyone can enter the building and admire this masterpiece.

37. Palau Guell:

Palau Guell is another beautiful building designed and built by Gaudi between 1886 and 1888 for the industrial Eusebi Guell. It is located in the El Raval quarter. You can visit the inside and go up to the roof, where you can see a nice view of the city. If you like Gaudi’s works, you cannot miss seeing this building. 

Palau Guell is FREE the first Sunday of every month, 11 February, 23 April, 20 May, 11 September, and 24 September, but you must book your free ticket.

38. Caixa Forum Barcelona:

Caixa Forum Barcelona is a less-known art gallery in Barcelona. It is located inside a former factory and sponsored by the Barcelona bank “la Caixa.” La Caixa Foundation is located in Montjuic and hosts one of Europe’s most famous contemporary art collections. 

You can buy the ticket at the entrance.

39. Casa Amatller:

Casa Amatller is another example of Catalan Modernism. Built by the architects Puig and Cadafalch in 1898, it is located next to the famous Casa Batllo by Antoni Gaudi. Inside, you can find a chocolate shop and a cafe. It is possible to visit the house, and the ticket price includes a cup of hot chocolate in the coffee shop.

40. Casa Batllo’:

Casa Batllo is an impressive building that will make you feel like you are inside a fairytale. This building deserves to be visited, not only from the outside but also from the inside. 

It is a famous sight, so I suggest you book your skip-the-line ticket in advance and see it very early in the morning to visit it at your own pace, without the crowd.

41. La Pedrera (Casa Mila’):

La Pedrera is another beautiful building by Antony Gaudi, where you will admire the Mila family’s apartment. During the tour, you will visit the roof, flat, attic, and courtyards, where you will be amazed by its beauty. Check out prices and availability to see it during the day here.

I went there during the day, but I heard that it is also spectacular in the evening, cause you can enjoy the stunning view of Barcelona at night.

42. Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona:

Bullfighting was banned in Catalonia (the region of Spain where Barcelona is) by the Parliament in July 2010. The last Bullfighting in the region was in September 2011. So you won’t be able to assist one (thankfully).

But you can visit the stunning Arena.

43. Sant Pau Hospital:

The “Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Pau” was built between 1901 and 1930 and designed by Lluis Domenech I Montaner, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It needs to be visited. It is a brilliant art nouveau building that will surprise you with its beauty.
