31 Local Spots to Have Breakfast in Barcelona (bakeries & cafes)
Welcome, my lovely, anxious traveler, to what is undoubtedly the most comprehensive guide to finding the best breakfast in Barcelona! As a devoted foodie with a deep love for experiencing local flavors, I’ve spent countless mornings (four trips totaling two glorious months, with my last visit just last September as the personal tour guide for my lucky husband Lajos!) exploring the vibrant breakfast places in Barcelona.
From charming traditional cafes in Barcelona to the most exquisite bakeries, I’ve personally pursued the spots where locals love to start their day (why visit Barcelona if we don’t eat like locals?).
Whether you crave something sweet like a perfectly flaky xuixo from Patisseria La Colmena or perhaps the award-winning croissant from Brunells, or you’re in the mood for savory delights, Barcelona’s breakfast scene has something for every palate.
I’ve even included the must-try breakfast for those with dietary needs, and highlighted some of the iconic Barcelona bakeries serving up the city’s most delectable cakes, like the cheesecake at JonCake.
For your convenience, where available, you’ll find website links and even links to pin these delicious destinations directly to your Google Maps. Get ready to conquer your breakfast anxiety and dive into the incredible world of Barcelona’s morning eats, this is your ultimate guide to tasting all the local delicacies and starting your day the Barcelona way!
Here’s why aligning your breakfast habits with the locals can be incredibly enriching:
1. Escape the Tourist Traps: By following the local rhythm, you’ll naturally find yourself exploring bakeries and Barcelona cafes that cater primarily to residents, steering clear of establishments solely focused on tourist crowds.
2. Experience the Vibe: Immersing yourself in the local flow allows you to witness the city come alive at the beginning of the day. Witness the vibrant energy of a bustling breakfast scene or the relaxed atmosphere of a coffee break mid-morning, all alongside the locals.
3. Discover a New Culinary Rhythm: Embracing the Spanish breakfast schedule allows you to experience the full spectrum of Spanish cuisine.
Remember, travel is not just about ticking off landmarks; it’s about immersing yourself in a different culture. By embracing the local rhythm, including mealtimes, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Barcelona and create memories that go far beyond the typical tourist experience.
So, ditch the rigid schedules and embrace the Spanish way of life, your taste buds and your travel experience will thank you for it!

Where to have the best breakfast in Barcelona
Best breakfast in the Barcelona Gothic Quarter
1. La Pallaresa Xocolateria Xurreria:
La Pallaresa Xocolateria Xurreria, located in the famous Barri Gòtic, one of the most famous areas in Barcelona, has been a beloved breakfast spot since 1947 and is a strong contender for the best breakfast place. This snug pit stop is renowned for its crispy, sugar-coated churros that are divine when dipped in their exceptional, thick hot chocolate.
Beyond the classic churros and chocolate, this long-standing establishment also offers coffee and delicious, oven-baked pastries, a testament to their commitment to quality. Locals and visitors alike praise this spot’s excellent service and old-school charm.
The hearty hot chocolate, often topped with a generous dollop of fresh, hand-whipped cream, is an experience. I suggest abandoning any diet plans upon arrival!
Many consider their hot chocolate and churros a genuinely authentic and top-quality Barcelona experience, enjoyed alongside the locals. For those seeking a genuine taste of Barcelona and a break from more modern cafes, La Pallaresa offers exceptional value and a delicious start to the day.
- What to order: churros con chocolate, crema catalana, melindros, mato cheese with honey and walnuts, Spanish flan with whipped cream.
- Dietary options: vegetarian and gluten-free options.
- Address: Carrer de Petritxol, 11, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (Google Maps)
2. Granja Dulcinea:
Granja Dulcinea, established in 1941 by Joan Mach and Elvira Farràs, stands as one of Barcelona’s most emblematic chocolate shops, right in the heart of the Barri Gòtic, making it one of the essential breakfast places. This isn’t just a breakfast place; it’s a spot where generations of locals have celebrated special moments. And for good reason!
Their traditional chocolate in a cup is a must-try, mainly the classic Swiss version served with cream and delicate melindros (ladyfingers). They also offer a delightful variety of teas, coffees, and pastries, perfect for a sweet start to your day or an afternoon treat when considering where to eat breakfast when visiting Barcelona.
I can personally vouch for their excellent churros, the texture is perfectly crispy, and the rich hot chocolate isn’t overwhelmingly sweet; it’s just spot on. It’s clear why this place is an institution! The store is charming, and the food quality speaks for itself. Be prepared for a queue, especially during peak times, but trust me, it moves quickly and is worth the wait.
Beyond the incredible churros and chocolate, they also serve other local delights like ensaimada and crema catalana. The bustling atmosphere truly reflects the history of this beloved spot. Granja Dulcinea should be on your list if you’re looking for a truly authentic taste of Barcelona and a memorable breakfast experience.
- What to order: churros con chocolate, ensaimada, xuixo de crema, melindro con chocolate, and crema catalana.
- Dietary options: some gluten-free options.
- Address: Carrer de Petritxol, 2, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (Google Maps)
3. Patisseria La Colmena:
Patisseria La Colmena is a real gem, one of the oldest pastry shops in Barcelona. When I walked in, I swear the air itself was sweet! They have SO many incredible local pastries and biscuits of Barcelona; I’m telling you, to try them all, you’d practically need to set up camp in Barcelona!
We decided to go for their famous xuixo de crema. Now, you HAVE to try this if you get the chance. Imagine a crispy, deep-fried roll that’s just bursting with the most amazing, creamy custard inside, that’s a xuixo, an authentic taste of Catalonia! The one at La Colmena was so packed with that luscious filling that Lajos and I shared it because it was pretty substantial, in the best way possible, of course!
This isn’t just some modern cafe; La Colmena has been delighting folks on Plaça de l’Àngel with its wonderful aromas for over a century. It started as “Ca l’Abella” way back when, and after being in a spot just across the street, the Costa family bought it in 1872 and gave it the name La Colmena.
The Roig family has been running it since 1927, and it’s incredible to think that even today, they’re still making candies and traditional Catalan treats using the same recipes from centuries ago.
So, if you’re looking for one of the best bakeries with a real sense of history and incredibly delicious, authentic sweets, especially that amazing xuixo, then La Colmena is definitely where to eat breakfast in the city center of Barcelona. Trust me on this one!
It is the perfect place if you stay in one of the hotels in the Gothic Quarter or if you book a hotel in Barcelona near the cruise port in Port Vell.
- What to order: xuixo de crema, Nougat of Xixona and Alacant, Carquinyolis, Pine nuts panellets.
- Dietary options: some gluten-free and lactose-free options.
- Address: Plaça de l’Àngel, 12, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (Google Maps)
4. Pastisseria Santa Clara:
Pastisseria Santa Clara, open since way back in 1834, is an absolute gem right in the heart of Barcelona. The incredible smell of freshly baked goodies pulls you right in the moment you walk by, and the rows of mouthwatering cakes practically beg to be devoured! It’s one of the best bakeries you’ll stumble upon.
The choice of local pastries and cakes of Barcelona is seriously dizzying in this place, in the best possible way! Each one looks more tempting than the last. And let me tell you, the quality is outstanding. Every single bite is just a perfect harmony of flavors and textures. Plus, the team at Pastisseria Santa Clara is so friendly and looks after you with a smile.
The atmosphere is lovely, charming, and super cozy, making it the ideal place to chill out and enjoy your treats with a good, strong coffee (they even have oat and soy milk!). It’s a fantastic find, especially considering it’s in the Gothic Quarter. Just a heads-up, it’s a small spot, so it can get a bit busy when everyone wants their pastry fix!
They have some of the most delicious Catalan cakes I’ve ever tasted and a few savory options if you’re not feeling entirely sweet first thing. For anyone exploring the Gothic Quarter in search of the best breakfast, Pastisseria Santa Clara is a must-visit.
- What to order: the piononos cake, xuixo de crema, madalena poma (apple muffin), and the cheesecake.
- Dietary options: some gluten-free options and vegan milk for the coffee.

5. Planelles Donat:
Panelles Donat offers a warm and friendly welcome from the moment you step inside their clean and neat store. While they’re famous for their turrons and delicious ice cream (with vegan options!), they also serve a wonderfully creamy Horchata, made from tiger nuts. It’s a quick but worthwhile stop, especially if you’re wandering around and fancying a refreshing local drink.
So, while perhaps not a traditional sit-down breakfast spot, if you’re looking for a little pick-me-up and a taste of something authentically local mid-morning, Panelles Donat is an excellent option amongst the cafes for a quick and tasty treat.
- What to order: horchata, coconut ice cream, and the sorbets flavours.
- Dietary options: vegan and lactose-free options.
- Address: Av del Portal de l’Àngel, 27, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google Maps)

6. Forn de Pa Sant Jordi:
Sant Jordi Forn de Pa is a tiny bakery that packs a mighty punch for deliciousness and easily becomes one of my favorite bakeries in the city! It opens incredibly early compared to other places nearby and is a lifesaver for early risers (like me!). I stumbled upon this gem; honestly, every sweet treat we bought there blew us away.
They were so fresh and wonderfully soft – I’d even go as far as to say it’s my current top spot for homemade pastries in Barcelona, and you bet I’ll be back on my next visit! Their flaky empanadas look amazing, and they have tons of crusty roll sandwiches too, but the pastries are the real stars.
Our absolute favorite? The Borratxo! This little bakery, going strong since 1798, manages to cram an impressive variety of local pastries into its small space, from ensaimada to magdalenas and even pineapple cake, plus so much more.
If you’re hunting for one of the best bakeries for a truly authentic and delicious start to your day, Sant Jordi Forn de Pa is a must-try for a delightful breakfast, and one of the top places to eat breakfast in Barcelona.
- What to order: the Barratxo, Magdalenas, pineapple cake, ensaimadas con crema, tartaletas de jerds (jam tart)
- Dietary options: some gluten-free and lactose-free options.
- Address: Carrer de la Llibreteria, 8, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google maps)

7. Mesón del Cafè 1909:
Mesón del Cafè 1909 is a place I sadly missed on my last Barcelona trip due to their holiday closure, but it’s definitely on my list for next time, especially after hearing about it from a local waiter! The reviews paint a picture of a truly special spot. Imagine this: you order a coffee and their famous crema catalana, and they actually caramelize the sugar topping right in front of you! How cool is that?
Visitors rave about the super friendly waitress who makes the whole place feel like a family gathering. But the real highlight seems to be the atmosphere. It’s described as stepping back a hundred years into a tiny, charming shop on a little side street – fantastic!
Even though I didn’t try it myself, I’ve heard their hot chocolate and churros are incredibly authentic, recommended by locals. Others who have stumbled upon Mesón del Café call it a great find, a super cozy spot with that wonderful old-school charm. Their coffee is apparently excellent, and that crema catalana? Creamy, perfectly caramelized, and just divine.
It sounds like Mesón del Cafè 1909 offers a truly unique and authentic experience, making it one of the must-visit cafes in Barcelona for a taste of old-world charm and delicious treats.
- What to order: churros con chocolate, crema catalana and the caffe bombon. They also have local Barcelona tapas.
- Dietary options: gluten-free and lactose-free options as tapas.
- Address: Carrer de la Llibreteria, 16, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google Maps)
8. The Vegan Corner:
Let’s give a big shout-out to all our vegan adventurers out there (and those traveling with them!). My wonderful friend Robert, a fellow vegan foodie and Barcelona lover, insisted I include The Vegan Corner on my list of amazing places to have breakfast, and trust me, Robert knows his stuff! Now, for those who might think vegan breakfast means just fruit and granola (yawn!), think again!
The Vegan Corner is whipping up incredible plant-based versions of all the Barcelona breakfast classics. We’re talking sandwiches packed with deliciousness, flaky croissants filled with dreamy pistachio cream (yes, vegan!), and get this – even vegan tortillas! I have absolutely no idea how they manage to make a tortilla without eggs, but Robert swears they are out-of-this-world delicious.
So, if you’re looking for a spot where everyone in your travel crew can find something amazing to kickstart their day with some real Spanish flavors, The Vegan Corner is a fantastic choice. High five to Robert for this awesome recommendation!
- What to order: everything is vegan so taste it all!
- Dietary options: it’s all vegan, and some cakes are also gluten-free.
- Address: Carrer d’Ataülf, 5, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google Maps)
Breakfast in Eixample Barcelona
9. Turris:
Turris is a name you’ll see pop up quite a bit as you wander around central Barcelona, and for good reason! It’s one of the best bakeries in town, focusing on seriously delicious artisan bread, baked fresh every day. So, if you’re in the mood for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of “tostada con mermelada” (bread with jam, my lovely traveler!), this is your place.
Keep in mind, though, that Turris is a bakery, not a cafe, so they don’t serve coffee. It’s the perfect spot to grab some fantastic bread to make your sandwiches if you plan a picnic lunch for a day at the beach after a morning of exploring. Beyond their incredible bread, Turris also offers a tempting selection of local pastries.
Think flaky croissants, those lovely Spanish muffins called “magdalenas” sprinkled with sugar, the spiral-shaped “ensaimada,” crunchy “carquinyolis” (almond biscotti), and a whole lot more. If you’re looking for top-notch baked goods for a delightful start to your day, Turris, with its multiple convenient locations, is a fantastic option for breakfast, especially if you’re happy to grab and go or enjoy your treats elsewhere.

- Address: many locations in the city center (see on Google Maps)

10. Gluna Sana Gluten-free Lab:
Gula Sana Gluten Free Lab is a fantastic find for anyone with dietary restrictions, especially if you’re looking for the best breakfast in Barcelona for gluten-intolerant travelers. But it’s not just for those avoiding gluten! They cater to a whole range of needs, with delicious parties, cakes, and muffins that are all celiac-friendly.
Plus, they have excellent options for diabetics and those with intolerances to lactose, eggs, nuts, and fructose – talk about being inclusive! They bake fresh bread, biscuits, donuts, and various tempting Spanish pastries daily. I must give a special shout-out to their palmera, that flaky, puff pastry delight – it’s one of my absolute favorites!

11. Villa Bakery:
Villa Bakery, right in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample district, is a super convenient and delicious option if, like me, you’re planning to grab some breakfast before heading to the iconic Casa Batlló or Casa Milà (two of the most visited museums in Barcelona).
They have a superb selection of flaky croissants, tempting cakes like their amazing cheesecakes (definitely one of the must-try cakes to eat in Barcelona!), fantastic coffee, and the most delicious, freshly squeezed Spanish orange juice (seriously, you can’t come to Barcelona and not have the orange juice!).
Plus, if you’re after something a bit more savory, they also offer croissants filled with ham and cheese, hearty tortillas, classic pan con tomate, and sandwiches packed with fresh ingredients. So, Villa Bakery is a winner for a fantastic bakery in Barcelona that caters to both sweet and savory cravings before your Gaudí adventures!

12. La Pastisseria Barcelona:
La Pastisseria Barcelona is an absolute haven if your taste buds yearn for incredible cakes and desserts in Barcelona. The cakes here? They’re on a whole different level – not your average cake shop fare in Barcelona. You can truly taste the passion and skill of a master pastry chef in every single, glorious bite.
Everything they create is pure perfection: the croissants are divine, the pastries are heavenly, and the cakes? Forget about it! It’s everything a dessert lover could dream of. The shop is super cozy and charming, a lovely spot to enjoy your treats. The staff are also really friendly and attentive.
It’s true that this place might be a little pricier than some of the other cafes we’ve talked about. Still, if you’re looking for a truly special and Instagram-worthy spot to indulge in a not-so-traditional breakfast (think artistic pastry creations!), La Pastisseria Barcelona is worth the splurge.
- What to order: the Passion cheesecake, which is vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free; the lemon meringue; and the chocolate croissant.
- Dietary options: vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options.

13. Casa Vives:
Casa Vives represents the enduring legacy of four generations dedicated to the art of bread making. Over time, they’ve skillfully evolved, expanding their offerings to include a delightful variety of high-quality pastry products. Their chocolate production sets Casa Vives apart and makes it the best bakery in Barcelona if you are looking for a vast selection of chocolate.
Whether you have a sweet tooth or prefer something savory, Casa Vives has you covered. You’ll find tempting sweet options like briocherie, various cakes, and flaky puff pastries. For those craving something heartier, they offer delicious quiches, traditional “coca” flatbreads, and a selection of sandwiches.
This impressive array of chocolates is a significant part of their business, promising a delightful experience for any chocolate lover. So, suppose you’re looking for a bakery that offers exceptional baked goods and a wide range of exquisite chocolates. 14. El Fornet:
El Fornet is another one of those reliable spots you’ll find in several locations across Barcelona’s city center. Lajos and I made it our early bird stop, grabbing breakfast there right when they opened at 7 am before heading off to capture those crowd-free shots around Plaça d’Espanya, right by Montjuïc.
Lajos was a big fan of this place; he raved about their delicious coffee, making it one of the best cafes for an early morning pick-me-up. Their pastries were exactly the fuel we needed for a day of exploring. They offer a nice mix of local pastries and savory choices like sandwiches.
We devoured a xuixo filled with rich chocolate cream and a wonderfully comforting apple tart on our visit. For a convenient and tasty start to your day with great coffee and satisfying pastries, El Fornet is a solid choice for breakfast.
- What to order: Xuixo with chocolate cream, apple tart, ensaimadas with cream, and chocolate croissants.
- Dietary options: ask about availability.
- Address: multiple locations (see on Google Maps)

From what my local friend tells me (it’s on my must-try list for our next Barcelona visit!), their monoportion cakes are véritable works of art – almost too beautiful to eat!

Breakfast in El Born Barcelona
16. Mercat de Santa Caterina:
One of my absolute favorite markets in Barcelona is the Mercat de Santa Caterina! If you’re looking to dive headfirst into this incredible city’s real, local vibe, ditch the tourist crowds of La Boqueria and head straight here. Seriously, this market is where it’s at! It’s located in one of my favorite quarters in Barcelona, El Born, and you’ll find it buzzing with locals doing their daily shopping – always a great sign, right?
But we’re talking breakfast, and oh boy, does the Mercat de Santa Caterina deliver! It’s packed with fantastic little spots where you can grab some seriously delicious local foodto kickstart your day. From fresh fruit smoothies and crusty bocadillos filled with local cheeses and ham to little tapas bars serving up morning bites, you’re spoiled for choice when deciding where to eat breakfast.
And the market itself? It’s a total feast for the eyes! You can’t miss that incredible, colorful, wavy roof – a real architectural gem. The market has been a local institution since 1845, and you can feel that history as you wander through the aisles. It’s not just about grabbing a bite; it’s an experience.
You can watch the fishmongers displaying their fresh catches, see the vibrant displays of fruits and vegetables, and maybe even pick up some local delicacies to enjoy later. Trust me, a visit to the Mercat de Santa Caterina is a must for anyone wanting an authentic taste of Barcelona and a fantastic place to enjoy some truly local food in Barcelona for breakfast. Don’t miss it!

17. Patisserie Hofmann:
Walking into Pastisseria Hofmann feels like walking into an art gallery rather than just a pastry shop! The creations here are truly masterpieces. After years of running the renowned Hofmann gastronomy school in Barcelona, Mey Hofmann opened this pastry haven in 2008. And let me tell you, the cakes and pastries aren’t just stunning; they taste divine!
Hofmann has snagged some serious accolades, including being named the Best Pastry of Catalonia for three years straight (2020, 2021, and 2022) and the Best Pastry Shop of Barcelona in 2023. Located in the trendy Born neighborhood, they offer an incredible range of deliciousness. They even have seasonal individual creations and special packs designed to wow even the most discerning foodies.
Their most iconic pastry? It has to be the mascarpone croissant (probably one of the best croissants in Barcelona. For a reason, it’s a classic Hofmann, perfectly crunchy on the outside with a melt-in-your-mouth creamy filling inside.
For a truly exceptional and artistic start to your day, Hofmann is undoubtedly one of the best breakfast places to start your day in Barcelona. Be prepared to be amazed!
- What to order: the pistachio and orange roll; the mascarpone croissant; the volcanic individual cake.
- Dietary options: ask for availability.
- Address: Carrer dels Flassaders, 44, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google Maps)
18. Brunells:
Even before tasting anything, I was already entirely charmed by Brunells in Barcelona’s El Born neighborhood. It’s not just one of the city’s oldest patisseries; their shop is lovely! They’ve been holding court in the same corner spot in El Born since way back in 1852, talk about history!
You can grab their delicious sweets to take away and enjoy later, but they also have a lovely little cafe area where you can sit down, relax, and savor your chosen cake or pastry with a drink. Now, if you find yourself a little overwhelmed by all the tempting choices (trust me, it’s easy to be!), I highly recommend going for one of their stuffed croissants (they probably have some of the best croissants in Barcelona).
They have a fantastic variety of flavors, from luscious pistachio cream to fresh strawberries and whipped cream, decadent white chocolate cream, and much more. And get this, their croissant was voted the Best Croissant of Spain in 2020!
For a breakfast spot steeped in history, with a beautiful setting and award-winning pastries, Brunells is a fantastic choice if you are looking for one of the best places to eat breakfast.
If you stay in one of the hotels near the Barcelona cruise terminal in El Born before embarking on a cruise, make sure to visit this place for a delicious street treat.
- What to order: pistachio cream croissant, strawberries and whipped cream croissant, Sara cake, pistachio and strawberry cake.
- Dietary options: gluten-free and lactose-free options.
- Address: Carrer de la Princesa, 22, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google Maps)
19. JonCake:
JonCake is undoubtedly the go-to spot if you’re a cheesecake fanatic in Barcelona. Seriously, people queue up to get their hands on a slice! Their cheesecakes are baked fresh daily and are unbelievably creamy. Now, forget those lighter American-style cheesecakes; at JonCake, they are generous with the cheese, making all the difference.
Their signature “Classic” combines Parmigiano Reggiano 24M, Grana Padano 16M, Gorgonzola, and creamy Mascarpone. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! They also have incredible cheesecakes featuring brie and blue cheese, alongside more traditional varieties made with Brie, Cabrales, Gorgonzola, and Parmigiano Reggiano.
They open only at 10 am, so this could be the perfect spot for a late breakfast. And for those with a more adventurous palate, they even offer creative options like Lotus, Tiramisu, and Truffle cheesecakes! What’s even more exciting is that they’ve recently opened a new place called Joncake&Wines, where, you guessed it, fantastic wines share the stage with their amazing cakes.
So, while maybe not your traditional “breakfast” spot, if you’re looking for a truly memorable and decadent sweet treat to start your day (or for a delightful midday break!), JonCake is an absolute must-visit in Barcelona. Just be prepared to wait in line, potentially – it’s that good!
- What to order: anything you fancy the most.
- Dietary options: not available.
- Address: Carrer de Sant Pere Més Baix, 36, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain (see on Google maps)
20. Xurreria Laietana:
Xurreria Laietana is a little slice of churro heaven in Barcelona! Their churros are the real deal – freshly made, wonderfully crispy, and served warm with a generous dusting of sweet sugar. And the perfect partner for these golden delights? Their rich and creamy hot chocolate, of course!
If you’re on a quest for authentic Spanish churros, the ones at Xurreria Laietana are worth indulging in. They keep it simple with just two things on the menu: classic churros with chocolate and the thicker “porras” (like a fatter churro) served with chocolate.
Lajos and I made this our breakfast stop on our last visit before exploring the El Born neighborhood, and we loved it. They open bright and early at 7 am, and we were the first ones there, so everything was made fresh for us right on the spot.
The owners were so friendly, even though our Spanish wasn’t excellent! Their churros with that thick, comforting chocolate were precisely what we needed to fuel our day of sightseeing. If you’re looking for a truly authentic and delicious experience eating breakfast, Xurreria Laietana is a must-try for classic churros and chocolate.
- What to order: churros or porras with hot chocolate.
- Dietary options: not available.

And let me tell you, these aren’t your grandma’s little biscuits. We’re talking HUGE, thick cookies practically bursting with the most incredible fillings. Peanut butter jelly? Check! Happy Hippo cookie? Oh YES! Pistachio? Apple pie? They’ve got it all!

And if that’s not enough indulgence for you, they also offer churros covered in chocolate or other delicious creams (talk about the perfect escape from any diet!).
Beyond their amazing churros, they also sell other sweet and savory local Barcelona foods with satisfying fried goodness. Lajos and I treated ourselves to the Kinder Bueno and Nutella-filled churros after exploring the famous Casa Milà in the Eixample (one of the most visited places in Barcelona).

26. PastéBCN – Pastelería en Barcelona:
If you’re a cheesecake fanatic like… well, someone who plans their whole day around dessert (guilty!), listen up! PastéBCN is your slice of cheesecake heaven right in Barcelona! The mastermind behind this deliciousness is Chef Hugo Roche, and he’s whipping up some seriously dreamy cheesecakes that are making both locals and us lucky travelers swoon.
This little gem isn’t in the middle of all the hustle and bustle; it’s slightly north. BUT! If you’re planning a visit to the stunning Casa Vicens Gaudí (and trust me, you SHOULD – it’s a must-see museum in Barcelona!), then you’re in luck! PastéBCN is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.
We popped over after our Casa Vicens visit, and oh my taste buds! Forget just classic cheesecake; we’re talking Sicilian pistachio cream, rich 70% chocolate with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt (ooh la la!), white chocolate peanut and caramel, and even a surprisingly delightful gorgonzola cheesecake!

And it’s easy to see why, it’s terrific, with a dazzling display of delicious food just begging to be photographed (guilty as charged!). If you’re thinking of having breakfast while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, La Boqueria has options.
You’ll find plenty of stalls offering local food of Barcelona, from colorful fruit stands bursting with freshness to tempting cheeses, cured meats, and nuts. Plus, there are little spots where you can grab a hot breakfast and coffee to fuel your explorations.
Just a little tip from someone who’s been there: while it’s a fantastic place to wander and admire, if you’re looking to buy food souvenirs, be aware that it can be pretty overpriced as it’s very tourist-centric.
You might want to explore some less crowded local markets and shops for more budget-friendly and authentic souvenirs from Barcelona. But for a visual feast and a taste of local flavors for breakfast, La Boqueria is an experience!

If someone asked me which pastry shop first comes to mind when I think of Barcelona, I’m sure it would be Christian Escribà’s. This iconic pastry chef is known for his whimsical and imaginative creations, turning cakes and pastries into edible works of art.
With a history dating back to 1906, Pastisseria Escribà has become a symbol of Barcelona’s vibrant culinary scene, blending tradition with avant-garde designs. Their incredible cakes have always been the showstoppers.
They are a claim not only to the people of Barcelona, who place orders on their most special days of the year, but also to tourists who wish to get a taste of one of the best bakeries.
Most travelers enjoy their classic crema catalana, stunning mini-desserts resembling miniature sculptures, or their perfectly flaky croissants. A visit to Escribà is not just about having breakfast; it’s about experiencing the artistry and passion of one of Barcelona’s most celebrated pastry families.
If you plan to stay in one of the hotels in Barcelona near the cruise port located in Las Ramblas, make sure to visit this place for your breakfast or a sweet treat in the afternoon.

Granja Viader is like returning to a Barcelona that has lovingly preserved its traditions. Since 1870, the Viader family has been at the helm of this dairy-turned-cafe, right in the heart of the city’s historic center, and wonderfully, not much has changed.
While it’s a perfect spot for where to eat breakfast, there’s a real dedication to quality behind the scenes – they even have their workshop where they pasteurize the fresh milk that perfectly complements their coffee.
Onsite, the passionate team is busy creating classic Catalan delights like creamy flan, fresh cottage cheese, the local goat milk cheese “queso mató,” served with honey and, of course, the iconic crema catalana. If you’re a fan of dairy and chocolate, you’ll love their history!
Granja Viader created the famous Cacaolat in the early 1900s, the most renowned chocolate milkshake brand in Spain (and yes, you can still order it here!). Beyond Cacaolat, their specialties include the rich “suís” (hot chocolate topped with whipped cream), refreshing “mallorquina”. milk (boiled with cinnamon and lemon zest, served cold). Forn de Pa Mistral, located in the center of Barcelona, boasts an incredible history stretching back over 100 years, having opened its doors in 1879. The Bertran family took the reins in 1977, giving it the name Mistral. Five generations of this family have dedicated their lives to continuing the tradition of the finest Catalan bread making, bringing their expertise, innovative ideas, and a true passion for this craft.
What’s special is that Forn Mistral is one of the best bakeries in Barcelona (and in Spain!) authorized to bake with the ancient Khorasan wheat variety, using the registered trademark KAMUT from organic farming and adhering to strict standards. Their numerous awards and recognitions speak volumes about their quality.
But they’re not just about the bread; they also prepare some of the best sweets of Barcelona, so if you’re on the hunt for a place to indulge your sweet tooth, this could be it. One of the most essential tips for visiting Barcelona I can give you is to seek out and savor the local delicacies, and Forn de Pa Mistral offers some truly exceptional ones!
