21 Local Restaurants in Barcelona Where Locals Love to Dine

Finding local restaurants in Barcelona while avoiding tourist traps can feel like a real challenge. With so many famous spots trending on social media, it is easy to end up paying high prices for mediocre meals just because a place is famous online.

As an Italian chef with 15 years of kitchen experience, I take food very seriously when I travel. I have visited Barcelona four times, staying for two weeks each trip, giving me two full months to explore the city’s food scene. During my visits, I made it a point to skip the tourist spots and ask local friends and neighborhood residents where they actually eat.

This curated guide features the absolute best spots for an authentic meal, from historic hidden gems to neighborhood taverns where you will dine among locals.

1. Can Culleretes

Can Culleretes is the oldest restaurant in Barcelona and the second oldest in all of Spain, welcoming guests since 1786. The dining room is beautiful, filled with antique Catalan tiles, wooden details, and traditional furniture. In fact, it is so historic that the signing of the Catalan Statute of Autonomy took place right here in 1932.

I discovered this spot back in 2013 thanks to a friend I was visiting in Barcelona. Her flatmate told me that if I was a real foodie, I simply had to eat here, and it instantly became one of my favorite local restaurants in Barcelona.

When Lajos and I ate here last September, we shared the fish soup, the local canelones gratinados for which they are so famous, and the pollo a la catalana, cooked to perfection with dried apricots, prunes, and sultanas.

Lajos tried their house-brewed beer while I enjoyed a local white wine. It is a fantastic place for couples wanting a memorable, classic dinner.

Colom Restaurant is a warm, unpretentious spot located in the heart of Ciutat Vella. It is always busy with a mix of locals and travelers who know where to find great food. You cannot make a reservation in advance and will likely need to wait in line for a table.

Lajos and I had a wonderful dinner here. We shared the paella de marisco, and I can honestly say it was one of the best paellas I have ever tasted. The kitchen also prepares fantastic Barcelona local tapas and massive mixed seafood platters. If you want a fun, lively evening with delicious food without breaking the bank, this spot is well worth the short wait.

3. Els 4Gats

Opened in 1897, Els 4Gats is iconic. Historically, it served as the main gathering place for famous artists and intellectuals, including Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dalí. The interior retains all of its old-world charm, making you feel as though you have stepped back into the late 19th century.

I visited Els 4 Gats on my very first trip to Barcelona after it was mentioned in my city guide while I was looking for tips on visiting Barcelona. While it is on the pricier side, the historical atmosphere and high-quality cooking make it a unique dining experience.

It is ideal for couples looking for a romantic, atmosphere-rich dinner in the Gothic Quarter.

  • What to order at Els 4Gats: Traditional Catalan stew “capipota” with cod throats in pil-pil sauce, 4Gats signature cannelloni with slow-cooked meat au gratin, Traditional Catalan noodle “rossejat” with clams and red prawns, Monkfish tail with burnt garlic 4Gats style served with caramelized potatoes and onions, Cod loin “a la llauna” Picasso style with Ganxet beans

4. La Vinateria del Call

Tucked away in the narrow streets of the Barrio Gótico Quarter, La Vinateria del Call is an intimate, rustic wine bar and restaurant. With dim lighting, wooden beams, and bottles lining the walls, it offers a cozy setting to unwind after exploring the city.

Lajos and I stopped by one evening intending to have just a light bite since we were not very hungry. However, the food was so good that we ended up ordering dish after dish, making it a great strategy when sharing your meal when traveling with your partner.

They serve fantastic local main dishes alongside cured meats and artisanal cheeses made from goat, cow, buffalo, and sheep milk. It is a wonderful stop if you appreciate fine wine paired with honest local cooking.

12. Can Ramonet

Set in a building that dates back to 1753, Can Ramonet is located in the old seaside district of La Barceloneta. The interior feels like a true maritime tavern, filled with barrel tables and wooden decor.

A friendly tour guide I met while visiting Park Güell, one of the unmissable places in Barcelona, told me that this spot makes one of the best rice and noodle dishes in the neighborhood. Lajos and I went for a quiet lunch, and the service was warm and attentive.

We ordered the Fideuà, which was fantastic, along with their Duo de bombes (made with black squid ink and prawns), finishing with traditional Carquinyolis sweet biscuits for dessert (whihc are unmissables local cookies to taste in Barcelona).

15. Xiringuito Escribà

Xiringuito Escribà is a bright, open-air seafront venue located right on the Poblenou beach. It offers casual coastal dining with covered outdoor seating overlooking the ocean.

This is my favorite spot for where to eat like a local in Barcelona when I want paella. I stumbled across it in 2011 on my first trip while walking along the beach with a friend. It was packed with locals, so we decided to try it, and it turned out to be the best seafood paella I have ever had.

Since then, I make it a rule to return every time I am in the city. You can watch the chefs cook the big pans of rice right on the side of the dining room. Plus, their dessert presentation is unique: the waiter brings out a whole tray displaying all the options to help you choose.

  • What to order at Xiringuito Escribà: Seafood paella, Pica-pica (snack selection for two), Duck confit croquettes, Street-style Ceviche, Grilled sardines, Valencian-style paella, Surf & turf paella or fideuà

16. Restaurant Cal Boter

Cal Boter is a cozy, family-run restaurant tucked into the charming neighborhood of Gràcia, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods to explore in Barcelona. It specializes in home-style Catalan cooking, featuring simple wooden tables and traditional artwork on the walls.

This is another place I found thank to my love in talking to anyone when traveling and thank god I did it so I found this place.

Their meatballs with cuttlefish were a complete revelation for me. It is a traditional Catalan “surf and turf” combination that I had never tried anywhere else, and as a chef, I was genuinely surprised by how delicious the flavors worked together. If you want a warm, authentic meal off the beaten track, this is a fantastic choice.

18. Maitea

Maitea is a bustling, authentic Basque-style tapas bar that instantly makes you feel welcome. Located just a short walk from Casa Milà (La Pedrera), it is the perfect spot to refuel after exploring some of the city’s iconic architecture.

The dining room has a lively energy with a wide-ranging display of both cold and hot bites lined up along the counter. Lajos and I dropped by for lunch right after our visit to Casa Milà. We ordered their ham croquettes and mushroom croquettes, which were wonderfully crisp and delicious.

Lajos also wanted to try the Cal Rovira pig’s ear served with fried eggs. While he absolutely loved it, I didn’t care for it as much because I found the pieces of ear a bit too hard for my taste!

They have an extensive menu packed with pinxos, tapas, and hearty main courses, making it a fantastic neighborhood stop.

If you visit Barcelona during the winter, which is often considered the best time to visit Barcelona for foodies who want to avoid summer crowds, this is an excellent place to try calçots, giant grilled spring onions served with rich romesco sauce.

A friendly waiter at Can Culleretes recommended this place to me specifically for seasonal local dishes. It is a fantastic reminder of why talking to locals always helps you avoid major mistakes to avoid in Spain.

Tips for Choosing Where to Eat in Barcelona

  • Eat on local time: Lunch usually starts around 2:00 PM, and dinner rarely starts before 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM.
  • Book early for famous spots: Historic places like Can Culleretes or beachside paella spots like Xiringuito Escribà fill up quickly on weekends.
  • Look for dynamic lunch menus: Many authentic spots offer a Menú del Día (Menu of the Day) on weekdays, offering three courses and a drink for a great value.
  • Avoid places with photos on the menu outside: Restaurants with large picture boards right on main thoroughfares like La Rambla are almost always tourist traps.
