As an Italian chef (and also travel blogger) with a deep-seated passion for food, I’ve dedicated countless hours to uncovering Rome’s culinary secrets. I have been to Rome four times, with my last visit only a few months ago.

With a professional chef’s palate (I have worked as a chef in Italy for more than 15 years) and the insider knowledge of local Roman friends (thank you, guys, you really helped me with this guide), I’ve meticulously selected the most loved restaurants in Rome city center by locals that showcase the best of Roman cuisine.

What are the foods Rome is famous for?

Roman cuisine is so full of delicious recipes that you will have to stay at least one week in Rome. From pasta alla carbonara (as mentioned above), there is something for every taste:

  • Spaghetti all’amatriciana
  • Gnocchi alla romana
  • Pasta con la pagliata
  • Quinto quarto (trippa)
  • Suppli’
  • Pasta cacio e pepe
  • Carciofi alla giudia
  • Abbacchio alla scottadito
  • Saltimbocca alla romana
  • Fagioli con le cotiche
  • Filetti di baccala
  • Pomodori ripieni gratinati
  • Insalata di punntarelle
  • Crostata di visciole
  • Maritozzo con la panna

These are only a few of the most typical foods originating in Rome. If you want to know more about them and many more, look at my best eats in Rome guide, where I wrote about all the best local food to eat in Rome and explained each one in detail.

Valentina’s Pro Tip: Some very famous restaurants in Rome are (or have become over the years) tourist traps. They sell pasta with tomato sauce for 17 euros (when other local places sell it for 9, like Da Bucatino, one of the oldest restaurants in Rome), just because they are very famous on social media. Avoid these places; the queue can be more than one hour long, tables are so close to each other you will feel like a sardine in a can, and at the end of your meal, some of them might push you to leave to serve more people. This is not what dining in Italy is about; those are just tourist traps open till late at night every day of the week. You won’t find any of those restaurants on this list. One of them is the Osteria da Fortunata. No Romans would dine there to make you understand how touristic those restaurants are. Then, if you still want to pay for a very overcharged meal, you are free to do so; my job is to warn you, then the wallet is yours.

3. L’Antica Birreria Peroni:

Since its grand opening in 1906, Antica Birreria Peroni has been a beloved Roman institution and one of the best places to eat local Roman dishes. Lajos and I had lunch at L’Antica Birreria Peroni after visiting the famous Galleria Doria Pamphilj (which I highly recommend you visit because it is one of the most amazing museums I have seen in Rome).

This iconic restaurant is a must-visit for beer lovers and food enthusiasts alike, which is why I decided to take Lajos there for lunch, as a Hungarian, he loves to taste local beers wherever we go.

While you’ll find classic Roman dishes on the menu, the unique fusion of Italian and Central European flavors sets this place apart. Indulge in hearty options like wurstel, goulash, and pork sausages alongside succulent T-bone steaks and other Italian meat masterpieces.

And, of course, no visit would be complete without sampling their four distinct Peroni beers, typical Italian beers, which is why I included L’Antica Birreria Peoni in my restaurants guide. Restaurants in Testaccio

5. Da Bucatino dal 1956:

Step back in time at Da Bucatino, one of the oldest restaurants in Rome. Lajos and I discovered these restaurants thanks to the taxi driver who took us from Rome’s airport to the city center on one of our holidays in Rome. I asked him where he and his family love to dine when eating local, and he suggested this place to me.

Located in the heart of the Testaccio neighborhood, this beloved local spot has served authentic Roman cuisine since 1956. The walls are adorned with vintage photos and artwork, paying homage to the restaurant’s rich history and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Da Bucatino is one of the best places to eat in Rome Italy, and a haven for seafood lovers, offering a variety of fresh catches prepared with traditional Roman recipes (it serves very good pasta). However, meat enthusiasts will also find plenty to satisfy their cravings.

This is one of the best affordable restaurants to dine at in Rome, ideal for enjoying local cuisine in the city center, maybe at lunch, before visiting the Colosseum and attending one of the fantastic guided tour of the Colosseum, as we did. When we visited, most diners were Italian, which was a perfect sign.

Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty Roman stew or delicate seafood pasta, Da Bucatino has something for everyone and is considered one of the best places to eat in Rome.

What to order at Da Bucatino dal 1956: Marinara-style mussels, the granma starter, rigatoni pasta alla pajata, ravioli filled with pecorino cheese, chicory with gricia sauce, cacciatore-style rabbit, baby pork with potatoes, diavola-style cod.

6. Perilli:

Trattoria Perilli is a charming, family-run gem and one of Rome best local restaurant. A Roman taxi driver suggested this place while driving us back to our accommodation after exploring the area around the Colosseum (but I haven’t had the chance to try it yet), saying that it offers an authentic taste of Rome.

To my question, ‘Where do locals eat in Rome?’, his reply was straight away ‘At Perilli’. So we had to try it. This old-school trattoria is a beloved local haunt, filled with the chatter of Romans enjoying classic Roman dishes.

I loved savoring homemade stracciatella (scrambled eggs in broth), just like my grandma used to make, and sharing a portion of roast pork with potatoes and aubergine parmigiana with Lajos. With its outdoor seating area perfect for the warmer season, Perilli is one of the best local restaurants where to dine in Rome to experience traditional Italian cuisine.

Don’t miss their mouthwatering meat dishes, a testament to Roman culinary heritage. This culinary institution has been delighting diners since 1911, making it a must-visit for any foodie exploring Rome’s vibrant food scene. Looking for places to eat in the Testaccio neighborhood? Perilli should be on your list!

What to order at Perilli: stracciatella in winter, rigatoni pasta alla carbonara, cannelloni, veal with tuna sauce, roast lamb with potatoes, Roman tripe, beans and pork rinds, lamb sweetbreads, pork livers.

7. Trattoria Felice a Testaccio dal 1936:

Felice a Testaccio is more than just a good restaurant in Rome; it symbolizes the vibrant Testaccio neighborhood, one of the most visited places in Rome. Founded in 1936 by Felice Trivelloni, this unassuming trattoria has evolved into a legendary dining destination within Rome and beyond.

Felice a Testaccio is one of the best places to eat in the Testaccio neighborhood, offering a classic Roman menu with occasional Italian twists. Their dishes are renowned for their authenticity and quality.

Do as I did before booking a table for Lajos and me at Trattoria Felice, and check their website for the updated menu to ensure you don’t miss out on their daily specials (I like to arrive at a restaurant already knowing what I want to order).

A visit to Rome isn’t complete without experiencing the magic of Felice a Testaccio, one of the city’s most iconic Italian restaurants in Rome.

8. Checchino dal 1887:

For those who love tradition like me, Checchino dal 1887 offers a €65 tasting menu featuring the dishes that made it one of the most famous restaurants to dine at in Rome. With a seasonal menu that highlights the freshest local ingredients, Checchino has been serving up Roman cuisine for over a century, making it one of the oldest restaurants in Rome (which is why you cannot miss it).

One of the restaurant’s specialties and also one of my favorites while in Rome is cucina del quinto quarto, or ‘fifth quarter’ cuisine. This unique cooking style focuses on the animal’s less conventional parts, such as the head, tail, feet, and offal.

These ingredients are the foundation of many traditional Roman dishes, particularly those from the Testaccio neighborhood. When looking at menus in Rome, if you spot offal dishes, then you’ve found yourself some authentic restaurants to enjoy the local dishes in Rome.

They also have many famous Roman dishes, so you can opt for something simpler if you don’t fancy eating offal dishes like I do.

What to order at Checchino dal 1887: Capocollo di Castelgandolfo (haunch of pork, dried and slightly spicey), rigatoni con pajata (pasta with small intestine calf), pasta carbonara, pasta amatriciana, Mixed roasted entrails (sweetbreads, liver, small intestine and testicles), saltimbocca alla Romana.

The fried artichoked we had at Ristorante da Massi

9. Ristorante Pinseria Da Massi:

Ristorante Da Massi is one of the best dinner restaurants in Rome and a Trastevere institution with a history dating back to the 1950s. What began as a local gathering spot has evolved into a beloved restaurant serving authentic Roman cuisine. On our recent visit to Rome, we enjoyed an excellent meal here.

We ordered fried, steamed artichokes, which the waiter told me is the only restaurant in Rome that steams them before frying them to make them softer. We obviously tried them, and they were the best I ever had.

It is also the perfect place to dine if you want to eat good pasta while in Rome (I’m sure you want to).

All the other dishes we ordered were fantastic; we love the Roman ossobuco and the fried lamb. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It’s a must-try for anyone visiting Rome. If you are looking to taste authentic local cuisine, this is one of the best Roman restaurants in Rome that is not a tourist trap.

You cannot miss including at least one dinner at Ristorante Pinseria Da Massi in your itinerary to visit Rome. If planning your visit makes you anxious because of too many choices, I’ve got a complete 3-day itinerary for Rome and a 4-day itinerary for Rome that also includes food stops at local places.

When Lajos and I had dinner at Trattoria da Gino alla Villetta, one of the dishes I loved the most was their pasta amatriciana; there was so much sauce in it, exactly like I make it for myself. This was the sign that this is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants to eat at.

14. Antica Osteria Rugantino:

Antica Osteria Rugantino in Trastevere is a truly memorable dining experience I cannot stop thinking about. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere is charming, and the service is impeccable. My husband Lajos was particularly impressed by the abbacchio alla scottadito (grilled lamb), which he deemed the best he’d ever had.

At Antica Osteria Rugantino, we also share (as we always share everything when dining out) some delicious Roman sheep ricotta, two small tasting portions of Roman oxtail and tripe, and a plate of delightful rigatoni alla amatriciana. 16. La Scala:

Thanks to La Scala, our first night in Rome was a culinary highlight, which is why I now consider it one of the non-touristic best restaurants in Rome, Italy. We were initially going to another restaurant, which, during the day, we found out is a very touristy place, so we asked locals for some recommendations. You wonder how? We were exploring Trastevere, so I stopped by local shops and asked for advice, and more than one told me to go to La Scala.

The restaurant has an elegant yet welcoming atmosphere, and attentive service made us feel like regulars. I must admit that most of the other diners were local, as I heard them speaking the Roman dialect with the waiters. This was the best sign I needed to confirm that La Scala is a mostly loved by local restaurant.

The menu was a feast for the eyes, with various seafood and meat dishes. Every bite was a flavor explosion, and we couldn’t resist ordering multiple dishes to try. At La Scala, I had the best carbonara to eat in Rome.

What to order at La Scala: the local cold cuts and cheese board, Spaghettoni alla Carbonara, Tonnarelli cacio e pepe, Grand’ma meatballs, Coda alla Vaccinara, Saltimbocca alla Romana, Potato flan with chicory, potatoes, mushrooms, and pecorino fondue.

18. La Gattabuia:

Dining at La Gattabuia is like stepping back in time. This is really one of the best Roman restaurants, and it is housed in a beautifully restored 15th-century papal dungeon with original brick ceilings and antique decor.

The menu features authentic Roman cuisine made with local ingredients, and the seasonal specials and innovative desserts are a delightful surprise. My local friends advise me to dine at La Gattabuia, and thank god I managed to book a table for me and Lajos.

Once there, I discovered that many famous Roman actors and singers love to dine there; one of my favorites is Antonello Venditti, but unfortunately, I didn’t see him that night.

The dishes I love the most at La Gattabuia are zucchini flowers with sundried tomatoes and burrata cheese, the coratella di agnello (lamb offal stew), the pasta con la pajata, and their homemade pistachio tiramisu, served in an Italian Moka, which, in my opinion, is one of the best tiramisus in Rome. This could easily be the best place to eat in Rome.

22. Antica Trattoria Polese:

Antica Osteria Polese in Rome is a hidden gem overlooking the picturesque Piazza Sforza Cesarini. I discovered this charming trattoria, housed in a historic building that was once part of the Borgia Palace, thanks to the owner of Sancesario Bijoux – Laboratorio Artigiano, a jewelry shop I visited while searching for artisanal shops in Rome to write an article about the best souvenir shops in the city.

You know me, guys, as soon as I have the chance to talk to a local, one of my questions is always, ‘Do you know a local place where locals love to dine in the area?’ and he advises me to book a table at Antica Trattoria Polese.

And I obviously listened to him, and I booked a table for Lajos and me. If a local tells me they know one of the best local restaurants, the first thing I have to do is check it by myself.

Once we arrived, we discovered that the Polese family has been serving authentic Roman cuisine since the early 1960s, and their passion for traditional flavors is evident in every dish we tasted.

From the cozy atmosphere to the warm and welcoming staff, Antica Osteria Polese is a must-visit for anyone seeking a truly local and unforgettable culinary experience. We love every bite, from the pasta carbonara to the deep-fried mozzarella to the abbacchio with potatoes.

They also serve spaghetti with mussels, mint, and pecorino cheese, which I then discovered is something locals really like in Rome. I honestly had no idea, and I haven’t tasted it yet, but if you do, let me know if you liked it.

What to order at Antica Trattoria Polese: Grilled courgette flower stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies, Mussel’s “pentolaccia,” Deep fried mozzarella cheese breaded with poppy and quinoa seeds, Maccheroni with fresh ricotta, guanciale, and black truffle cream, Abbacchio alla Cacciatora, Straccetti di manzo alla Romana, Toasted bread with mozzarella, anchovies, and zucchini flowers.

Entrance of the Canova Tadolini restaurant in Rome

28. Canova Tadolini:

In January 1818, Antonio Canova, at the pinnacle of his European fame, signed a lease for his sculpture studio in favor of his most promising student, Adamo Tadolini. Located at the corner of Via del Babuino and Via dei Greci in Rome’s artistic district, Canova had used this studio for years to complete numerous commissions. He collaborated closely with Tadolini, entrusting him with reproducing many of his most famous works.

From 1818 to 1967, the studio on Via del Babuino remained in the possession of four generations of Tadolini sculptors. The art of sculpture was passed down through the family, each generation reflecting the cultural spirit of their time.

Today, the studio preserves two centuries of Italian sculpture, including preparatory models, finished marble and bronze works, anatomical studies, and tools. The studio’s original, fascinating disorder has been carefully maintained.

Canova Tadolini is a restaurant serving local Roman cuisine and a cafe serving delicious afternoon tea with Italian pastries and cakes and, of course, Italian coffee. I did not dine there; I just visited the entrance to see all these famous statues. If you decide to dine at Canova Tadolini restaurant, let me know if you like it.

You guys know me, I hate restaurants near or in famous squares, but a local suggested that I dine at Romoletto, so I trusted her, and Lajod and I loved their food so much that I could not include it in this list.

We had lunch at Romoletto, after visiting the Vatican Museums and attending one of the best early-morning private tours of the Vatican City (we were so hungry after all that walking), and it was a great decision.

Indulge in their mouthwatering pizzas and Roman pinsa, or venture beyond with other delectable local specialties. I still dream about their pappardelle with Roman oxtail sauce; it was the best I’ve tasted in the entire city!

FAQs about local restaurants in Rome

What is the most popular food in Rome?

The uncontested Queen of Roman food is pasta alla Carbonara, Rome’s most popular food. It is a real delicacy you cannot miss when visiting Rome or anywhere else in Italy.

Everything you eat in Rome will be delicious, but if you still have no idea what Roman cuisine is all about, read my “Best food to eat in Rome” article to learn what to order at the restaurant.

Do you need to make reservations at authentic italian restaurants in Rome?

You must make reservations in advance before visiting Rome! The city is always buzzing with visitors, so snagging a table at a popular spot can be a real challenge.
I usually book my dinner reservations at least a month in advance, and even then, some places are already fully booked! Trust me, planning is vital, especially during peak seasons.

A few restaurants don’t take reservations, but those are the places where you’ll find yourself waiting in a serious line, especially around 7 p.m. So, to avoid the queue, be prepared to dine early or late.
