What should I avoid in Rome?
There are many things you should avoid doing when visiting Rome. The most important thing for me is to avoid visiting it for just one weekend. Rome is a capital; it is enormous and has so much to offer to anyone willing to spend time exploring its beauty.
I have the right article for you about things to avoid doing in Rome. As always, your super-organized travel blogger gives you all the tips and info you need to plan the perfect holiday worldwide.

59 Essential Rome Travel Tips for First Timers
Planning tips when visiting Rome
1. Choose to Visit Rome During Winter, Spring, or Autumn:
Let’s talk about the perfect time to experience Rome, because let me tell you, timing is everything! My Roman friends often joke about the “August exodus,” and after spending a combined month there across four different trips, I completely get it.
Imagine you’ve finally made it to the Eternal City, buzzing with excitement to visit the Colosseum, only to find yourself sweating through your carefully chosen outfit in a queue that stretches for what feels like miles.
Or trying to grab a quick, delicious pasta at a charming trattoria, only to find no available tables and the sun beating down at a scorching 40 degrees Celsius (that’s 104 Fahrenheit for my American friends).
Believe me, I’ve seen it firsthand, those peak summer months of July and August can turn a dream vacation into a sweaty, crowded nightmare, not to mention how much pricier all the accommodations become. These are just some of the essential things to know when visiting Rome that I’ve picked up, often the hard way, so you don’t have to!
You work hard, and your precious free time deserves to be spent enjoying every single moment of your Roman holiday, not battling heat stroke or elbowing your way through crowds. We’re aiming for blissful exploration, not an accidental sweat lodge at the Vatican Museums.
2. Choose to stay in Rome for at least four days:
Let’s talk about the length of your Roman love affair! I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Rome four times, and each stay has lasted at least a week. Why so long, you ask? Because Rome isn’t just a city, you see, it’s a city you feel and explore.
If you only give yourself a few days, you’ll be rushing from one breathtaking sight to the next, likely feeling more stressed than enchanted.
Take, for example, visiting the Vatican Museums. Lajos and I could have easily spent a glorious afternoon getting lost amidst Rome’s incredible museums, including the Sistine Chapel. But there is so much more than just the big-name places to see in Rome.
Lajos and I found hidden courtyards, walked around charming parks like Villa Borghese, and got lost taking pictures in Roman neighborhoods, each with its own unique vibe, that were waiting for us to be explored for hours (which we obviously did).
Additionally, you must dedicate time to truly savoring the incredible local Roman dishes, Lajos and I loved devouring creamy cacio e pepe and crispy supplì (if you’re a fan of Roman food, you can download my Rome food guide PDF here).
My Roman friends have taken me to countless little local tavernas and restaurants where the food is pure magic, and those experiences can’t be rushed.
So, for the most organized and enjoyable trip, I promise you, spending a whole week is one of the best tips to know when visiting Rome you’ll ever get. You truly won’t regret it – Rome is pure, unadulterated magic that deserves your undivided attention.
3. Research first, then decide how many days to stay:
Here’s a common mistake in Rome I see folks fall into: they decide on a fixed number of days for their Roman holiday, say, “Oh, I’ll do a 3-day in Rome itinerary,” and then they start looking up what to see.
Trust me, after spending at least a week on each of my four visits to the Eternal City, I can tell you this approach often leads to a frantic, check-the-box kind of trip. You’ll feel like you’re rushing through ancient wonders instead of savoring them.
Rome is an absolute treasure chest, overflowing with iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and delicious culinary experiences. There’s just so much more to absorb than you can cram into a couple of days. My best advice for your first visit is to flip that planning process on its head. First, dive deep into your research!
Grab a cup of your favorite Italian coffee (or tea, no judgment here, I usually prefer a good cup of hibiscus tea to anything else) and explore my comprehensive Rome travel guide right here on Valentina’s Travel Guide.
Look through all my articles about Rome, pinpointing those experiences, museums, and neighborhoods that truly call to your heart. Once you have your personal “must-do” list, then and only then, decide how many days you need to comfortably plan your trip to Rome.
This way, you’ll craft an itinerary that allows for leisurely exploration, spontaneous gelato breaks, and soaking in the Roman atmosphere without feeling like you’re running a marathon. You deserve a stress-free, deeply immersive Roman adventure, not a whirlwind blur.

4. Fly into Ciampino instead of Fiumicino (it is cheaper):
Listen up, my lovely, anxious traveler, because here are some super-savvy money-saving vacation tips that might just surprise you: consider flying into Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) instead of the larger, more well-known Fiumicino (FCO) as Lajojs and I did coming from London!
Now, if you’re jetting in from outside Europe, Fiumicino is almost certainly your landing spot. However, if you’re coming from within Europe or adding Rome as a fantastic stop on a multi-city European adventure, you’ll want to check out flights to Ciampino.
Here’s the lowdown from my own experience, and what my Roman friends often confirm: budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air frequently fly into Ciampino, and their fares can be significantly cheaper than those into Fiumicino.
I’m talking about saving enough euros to splurge on a few extra plates of incredible cacio e pepe, some divine local wines, or those unmissable Roman souvenirs that’ll remind you of your amazing trip. Ciampino is smaller, which can sometimes mean a quicker exit from the airport too, less time navigating crowds, more time exploring the Eternal City!
So, before you click that “book flight” button, do a quick comparison; your wallet (and your taste buds) will thank you.

5. There is a flat fee from airports to Rome:
Let’s talk about the super-smart way to arrive in Rome and save some precious euros for gelato and souvenirs: the fixed taxi Rome fares from the airports! This is one of my top travel tips for a smooth, stress-free start to your adventure.
Here’s the scoop: if your accommodation is located within the ancient Aurelian Walls (which essentially covers the historical center where all the magic happens), there’s a flat fee for a licensed white taxi from both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. You heard that right, no nasty surprises with a meter ticking up in traffic!
As of my last check, when I went to Rome this year, in May 2025, and this is crucial for how to get to Rome from the airport without a hitch, the fixed fares are:
- From Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to anywhere within the Aurelian Walls: €55
- From Ciampino Airport (CIA) to anywhere within the Aurelian Walls: €40
Now, here’s a little insider trick I’ve suggested to some of my readers who asked me for tips on planning their trip to Rome, which is precisely what I did on my own trips, especially when my hotel was just outside the walls but super close by, and I wasn’t lugging my entire wardrobe.
You can politely ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point just inside the Aurelian Walls.
This way, you still get the fixed rate, often save some money compared to a metered fare to an address just outside, and you’re practically at your destination in no time.
6. Book your accommodation as early as possible:
The absolute key to unlocking your dream Roman vacation: snagging your accommodation early! I can’t stress this enough as one of my top tips for tourists. For our last visit to Rome last May, Lajos and I booked our accommodation 7 months in advance. This allowed us to secure the place we wanted and save money, as prices rise closer to the check-in date.
Rome is ridiculously popular, like a celebrity that everyone wants to meet, and some of the best hotels, especially those top hotels with a rooftop terrace where to have breakfast with a view, or the most romantic hotels with a spa, that offer that perfect haven after a day of exploring, get booked up incredibly fast.
I’ve seen it happen to friends, and it almost happened to me on one of my earlier trips when I was younger: I set my dates, then procrastinated on the hotel, only to find my dream spot was full, sometimes even a year in advance. It’s like trying to get front-row seats to a sold-out concert; if you wait, you’re out of luck.
To ensure you get the best selection of hotels, at potentially better prices, and avoid that creeping travel anxiety about where you’ll lay your head, mark your calendar. As soon as you’ve decided on your travel dates for Rome, jump online and book your accommodation.
7. Book your accommodation in the city center:
I am sure some of you prefer to book accommodation far from the city center to save some money. Still, everything essential to see in Rome is in the center. On all my previous trips to Rome, I booked my accommodations in the city center to walk straight to every vital site I wanted to visit.
Believe me, you will enjoy walking through the city center and not having to catch public transport every day to move around.
Rome offers excellent romantic hotels with sophisticated accommodations, and even some incredible hotels with a rooftop terrace where you can have breakfast with a view, and if you’re looking for a luxury experience, the city has fantastic luxury hotels where you’ll be treated like royalty.
There are plenty of beautiful local places to have breakfast, as well as some very stylish houses to take a picture of for your Instagram account. Of course, if you have a mobility problem, two metro lines and many buses are available to get you anywhere you need to go.

8. Avoid booking rooms with breakfast included:
Forget those scrambled eggs, my lovely, anxious traveler, because here’s one of my absolute favorite tips I can give you for going to Rome: do not book a room with breakfast included!
Seriously, who travels to the Eternal City to eat bacon and eggs, something you can have any day back home? You’d be missing out on a glorious, authentic Roman morning pastries, and frankly, wasting precious euros that could be much better spent.
Rome’s breakfast scene is a sweet, delightful dream, and my Roman friends have guided me to so many incredible spots. Instead of a bland hotel buffet (if you cannot afford one of the top hotels in Rome), Lajos and I started all our days in Rome like true locals: sinking our teeth into a cloud-like maritozzo con la panna, a classic Roman sweet bun overflowing with whipped cream.
We loved a slice of a heavenly crostata di ricotta e visciole, a tart filled with ricotta cheese and sour cherries. And don’t even get me started on the flaky, custard-filled cornetto alla crema or the simple yet perfect ciambellina al vino, a wine cookie that pairs amazingly with coffee.
We found countless charming local cafes in Rome where we stand at the bar, sip a perfect cappuccino, and indulge in these irresistible pastries alongside Romans heading to work.
It’s a small experience that makes a huge difference in immersing yourself in the culture, and I promise, you won’t regret skipping the hotel breakfast for this delicious daily adventure.

9. Buy Museums and Attractions tickets in advance:
The queues to visit top tourist sites in Rome can be ridiculously long, sometimes a kilometer or more at peak times. And let’s be real, you’ve flown all this way to immerse yourself in ancient history and vibrant culture, not to spend half your precious day standing in a stagnant line under the sun or rain.
Skip-the-line tickets are our best friend. I was so happy while Lajos and I waltzed past hundreds of people waiting, feeling smug and savvy, as we headed straight for the entrance of the Castel Sant’Angelo or the Vatican Museums. It’s a game-changer that frees you up to explore and enjoy.
To obtain these coveted passes at the best price and ensure we had all our arrangements for our adventure through incredible museums and galleries in Rome, I highly recommend that you do as we did, and check out my favorite website for purchasing them in advance.
This is one of those crucial tips and tricks for visiting Rome that will genuinely save you hours of waiting and countless moments of frustration.
Seriously, book them well in advance to guarantee your spot and save that precious time. You absolutely, 100% won’t regret it.

Here are the top 8 places you’ll definitely want to have on your radar (and remember those skip-the-line tickets I mentioned for many of these!):
- The Colosseum: This ancient amphitheater is arguably the most famous landmark in Rome, Italy. You just have to see where gladiators once battled!
- Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: Prepare to be absolutely overwhelmed (in the best way!) by one of the largest art collections in the world, culminating in Michelangelo’s breathtaking Sistine Chapel.
- St. Peter’s Basilica: Located within Vatican City, this awe-inspiring basilica is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and a truly spiritual place. The dome views are spectacular!
- The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill: Just next to the Colosseum, these sprawling ruins were once the bustling heart of ancient Roman life. Wandering through them feels like stepping back in time.
- The Pantheon: This incredibly well-preserved ancient Roman temple (now a church) is an architectural marvel with its iconic oculus open to the sky. It’s a must-see.

- Borghese Gallery and Museum: Tucked away in the beautiful Villa Borghese gardens, this smaller, intimate museum houses masterpieces by Bernini and Caravaggio. You must book tickets well in advance for this one!
- Capitoline Museums: Considered the world’s first public museums, these are housed across several palaces on Capitoline Hill (designed by Michelangelo himself!) and contain an incredible collection of ancient Roman art and artifacts.
WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT FOOD IN ROME?
What to eat in Rome can be a delicious, yet daunting, question, right? Don’t just settle for the tourist traps; start your day in one of the most local Roman breakfast spots. Find the best street food lunch in Rome and the absolute best Roman restaurants where the locals actually eat.
And, oh, the desserts! We’re talking beyond the classics, yes, you need to try the famous pastries & desserts in Rome, but let’s also find the most delicious Roman gelato spots, and hunt down that legendary pistacchio tiramisu in Rome I keep raving about!
If you fancy learning to cook like an Italian, book a pasta and tiramisu class or a fantastic pizza class with wine for couples, or attend an authentic Roman food tour.
And for those special evenings, check out my curated list of romantic restaurants in Rome with a view, because trust me, some memories are best made with a side of panorama. Let’s make your Roman food adventure legendary!

10. Visit Museums in the early morning or late afternoon:
My top tips for visiting beautiful Rome include visiting museums and famous sites at the opening or during the last few hours before closing. From my four Roman adventures, I’ve learned this trick helps you be among the first in or enjoy a quieter visit as crowds thin out.
The absolute busiest times to visit a Museum or attraction are usually 11 AM to 3 PM, so avoid those if you want to savor your visit instead of battling crowds. Book those skip-the-line tickets in advance too, it’s a double whammy for a stress-free experience!

11. Avoid the crowd:
Here’s a savvy little secret from my travel tips for first-timers guide playbook: save those incredible museums for Monday through Thursday! Trust me on this one.
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are Rome’s busiest days, absolutely bursting with both tourists and locals out enjoying the city. You’ll find museums packed, and lines stretching longer than your patience.
Instead, if your schedule allows, fly into Rome on a Monday or Tuesday as Lajos and I did. We visited the major museums and galleries in Rome early in the week when the crowds were thinner.
Then, we dedicated our weekend to blissful, ticket-free exploration: wander through charming squares, pop into shops, discover new restaurants, explore the picturesque Roman hills, and enjoy a stroll along the Tiber River.
This way, we were always one step ahead of the crowds, enjoying a relaxed and truly immersive Roman adventure.

12. Plan Your Visit to the Vatican Museums:
Let’s talk about the grand jewel of Roman museums: the Vatican Museums! This isn’t just a museum, it’s an entire universe of art, history, and spiritual wonder, culminating in Michelangelo’s breathtaking Sistine Chapel.
It’s truly a must-see, and I cannot emphasize this enough as one of my most crucial tips: you absolutely, positively must book your tickets in advance.
I’ve witnessed lines that snake for over a kilometer by 10 AM, and I’ve heard too many sad stories of travelers showing up only to find tickets completely sold out, sometimes even a month in advance during peak season.
You do not want that kind of stress ruining your meticulously planned Roman holiday! Booking ahead ensures you get your desired entry time, sidesteps those colossal queues, and guarantees your spot in one of the most incredible places on earth. It’s the ultimate power move for a super-organized, anxiety-free visit.
13. The Fastest Way to Reach the City Centre From Fiumicino Airport is by Train Leonardo:
Alright, my lovely, anxious traveler, let’s discuss the quickest way to get from Fiumicino to Rome’s city center and kickstart your adventure without delay! This is one of those crucial tips on traveling to Rome that saves you time and stress right from the start.
After you land at Fiumicino Airport (FCO), your best friend for speed is the Leonardo Express train. This dedicated, non-stop train will whisk you right into Termini Station, the heart of Rome’s transportation network, in only about 30 minutes.
It’s fast, efficient, and best of all, it completely bypasses any potential road traffic that could turn a short drive into a long, frustrating wait. You’ll be stepping off the train, ready to dive into the Eternal City, while others are still inching along in a taxi or bus. It’s the ultimate fast-pass for arriving in Rome!
14. Learn some Italian phrases:
Get ready to charm the pants off the locals (metaphorically speaking, of course!) with this little gem of my travel tips for travelers visiting Rome: Italians are some of the warmest, most welcoming people you’ll ever meet, and they adore it when you make even a tiny effort to speak their language.
Trust me, on my trips, a simple ‘Buongiorno‘ (good morning), ‘Grazie‘ (thank you), or ‘Per favore‘ (please) goes a mile further than you’d imagine. They’ll appreciate your effort and will be even more inclined to help you or share a laugh.
Now, a little heads-up from my own experiences and stories from my Roman friends: if you’re dreaming of an Italian romantic holiday, you’re definitely in the right place!
Just be playfully aware of the infamous “Latin lover” type. They are incredibly charming, smooth talkers, and know just how to make a tourist feel special. It’s all part of the fun, but just keep your wits about you!
To help you out, I highly recommend spending a little time on my favorite language app, Duolingo, before you go. Learning a few simple phrases will not only enhance your interactions but also add an extra layer of fun to your Roman adventure!

Tips on Rome to Plan your itinerary

15. Plan an itinerary so you don’t miss anything important to you:
Here’s the ultimate secret weapon against travel FOMO: planning your itinerary to visit Rome strategically so you genuinely don’t miss anything that matters to you! I know for many of my lovely, anxious travelers, the idea of trying to spend 3 days in Rome can feel like trying to fit an ocean into a teacup.
However, with the right approach, you can create a highly organized trip that hits all your personal highlights. My best travel tips ti explore Rome are simple: don’t just blindly follow someone else’s itinerary, unless you like my 3-day Rome itinerary, or my 4 days itinerary in Rome, in which case, follow it; it’s packed with food stops.
Grab a pen and paper (or open up a spreadsheet, if you’re like me and love a good list!), and identify your absolute must-sees in Rome, Roman must-eats, and must-experiences.
Do you dream of attending one of the best Colosseum and Forum tours, or one of the best early-access Vatican Museums tours, or simply wandering through Trastevere, soaking up the atmosphere and finding the best cacio e pepe? Once you’ve listed your priorities, then map them out.
Give yourself enough time to truly savor each moment, building in buffer time for gelato breaks, getting delightfully lost on cobblestone streets, and unexpected discoveries. This isn’t about rushing; it’s about intentional exploration. Remember, a meticulously planned itinerary is your ticket to a stress-free Roman adventure where you feel in control and truly present.
Valentina’s Tips: If you dream about staying in the most loved neighborhood for foodies, you should book a room in one of the 12 Romantic boutique hotels in Trastevere, to be just a walk away from some of the top food places in Rome.

16. Create a map on Google Maps of all your places:
Let’s get you super-organized with a visual way to conquer Rome! Creating a custom map on Google Maps is an absolute game-changer for planning your daily adventures, and it’s one of my top tips for anyone visiting Rome for a smooth, stress-free trip, especially if you’re traveling to beaitiful Rome for the first time.

17. Plan to start your day early:
One of the most vital travel tips for first timers is becoming an early bird! I know, I know, vacation often means sleeping in, but trust me on this one. My Roman friends always emphasize how different the city feels in those quiet, early morning hours, and after four trips, I couldn’t agree more.
On our last trip to Rome, Lajos and I started exploring every morning at 6 am, and it was the best decision we made.
We were standing in front of the Castel Sant’Angelo, not elbowing through hundreds of people, but with just a handful of other early risers. We took pictures and videos in front of the San Peter’s Basilica, feeling the ancient stones beneath our feet, with only the echoes of history for company.
This is the magic of starting your day early. Not only did we capture truly stunning pictures of outside landmarks bathed in soft morning light, but we also got to experience the sheer joy of walking in the streets of Rome without the crowd.
Those bustling piazzas, which are packed later in the day, were ours for peaceful contemplation. We could truly immerse ourselves in the atmosphere, grab a cappuccino and a cornetto from a local bar, and witness the city slowly come to life.
It’s a serene, almost spiritual experience that we could not find during peak hours. This proactive approach is a key part of any good itinerary planning and made our Roman adventure feel less like a crowded race and more like a personal, enchanting journey.
If planning your visit makes you anxious because of too many choices, I’ve got a complete 3-day itinerary for Rome and a 4-day itinerary for Rome that also includes food stops at local places.
Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips. They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.

18. Don’t see the Vatican and the Colosseum on the same day:
Here’s one of my absolute top Rome essentials tips and a true Rome insider tips gem: never try to visit the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums on the same day! Trust me, I’ve been to Rome four times, and trying to do both is a recipe for exhaustion, not enjoyment.
Your Colosseum ticket includes admission to the sprawling Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, an archaeological wonderland that requires 2 to 5 hours to explore thoroughly. The Vatican Museums, with the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, can take half a day or even a whole day. You’d be rushing, missing details, and feeling utterly overwhelmed.
So, here’s my super-organized approach for a stress-free experience:
- Ancient Rome Day: Dedicate one day to visit the Colosseum area, to attend one of the best Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill tours. Afterwards, you can explore the majestic Altare della Patria nearby.
- Vatican City Day: On a separate day, immerse yourself in one of the early access Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Tours. Then, pop over to Castel Sant’Angelo and explore that charming area.
This way, you can savor each incredible site, overcome travel anxiety, and ensure your Roman adventure is filled with awe, not exhaustion!
19. When planning your itinerary, keep museum closures in mind:
A super important detail for your meticulously planned Roman holiday, one of those vital tips you need: always, always keep museum closure days in mind! I’ve seen too many hopeful faces turn to disappointment when they arrive at a locked door.
For instance, the incredible Vatican Museums are famously closed on Sundays (but it is open for free entrance on the last Sunday of the month from 9 am to 2 pm). Other fantastic Rome recommendations, such as specific art galleries or archaeological sites, may be closed on Mondays. Each attraction has its schedule, and it’s not always intuitive.
Before finalizing your daily Roman itinerary, take a few minutes to check the specific opening days and hours for each museum and attraction you wish to visit.
A glance at their official websites will save you from an unexpected detour and ensure your exploration goes precisely as planned. This small step makes a huge difference in keeping your trip stress-free and super-organized!
If planning your visit makes you anxious because of too many choices, I’ve got a complete 3-day itinerary for Rome and a 4-day itinerary for Rome that also includes food stops at local places.

20. The Pantheon isn’t free to visit anymore:
Here’s a quick but essential update from my most recent trip to Rome that falls under crucial tips to know when traveling to Rome: the magnificent Pantheon is no longer free to visit! On my first three trips to the Eternal City, I’d pop in and out of that architectural marvel whenever I pleased, no queue, no ticket, just pure awe.
Now, things have changed. You do have to pay an entrance fee to step inside. While this is a new development, it also means that during those super-busy months, you’ll want to purchase your ticket in advance.
This is a significant step in reducing waiting time! You’ve come all this way to soak in Roman history, not to spend precious moments standing in line. So, even for the Pantheon, booking ahead will ensure you glide right in and maximize every precious second of your well-deserved Roman vacation.

21. Book a guided tour:
Alright, my lovely, anxious traveler, here’s one of my top tips to give you when visiting Rome: book a walking guided tour! Trust me, I’ve explored Rome extensively, and while wandering is terrific, a local guide truly brings the city to life.
Imagine standing in the Roman Forum, where a passionate local historian tells you stories that bring ancient ruins to vivid life. They’ll share insights you won’t find in guidebooks, navigate charming backstreets, and answer all your questions.
It’s the best way to gain a deep understanding of the city’s history and feel like a true Roman insider. It completely changes your experience for the better!

22. Walk instead of renting a car:
Most of the absolute best places to see in Rome are conveniently nestled right in the city center. Even if your amazing accommodation is a little outside the core, don’t fret, this is one of my top tips for traveling to beautiful Rome.
Rome has a fantastic network of buses and two metro lines that will whisk you to almost every spot you wish to see. Here’s a crucial one of my things to know about Rome: Roman traffic is, well, terrible.
Seriously, you do not want to spend your precious vacation stuck in gridlock instead of gazing at ancient ruins. So, unless you’re planning day trips outside the city (in which case, a rental car is a great idea!), avoid renting a car within Rome itself. Embrace public transport and walking; it’s the best way to experience the Eternal City!

23. Avoid a day trip to the Amalfi Coast and Pompei:
A common question I receive about tips is whether to take day trips to places like the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii. Here’s my honest take, from someone who’s planned many Roman adventures: I would never personally plan a day trip to either of these from Rome. Why? Because they are so far.
Trying to squeeze the stunning Amalfi Coast or historically rich Pompeii into a single day means an exhausting amount of travel time. You’ll spend hours on trains or buses, leaving you with precious little time to explore and enjoy. If your heart is truly set on visiting them, I strongly recommend heading there and spending at least one night nearby.
This way, you can truly immerse yourself and savor the experience. Only consider a day trip if it’s your absolute, non-negotiable dream, and an overnight stay is genuinely impossible. You deserve to experience these incredible places fully, not just glimpse them in a blur!

24. Plan a day trip nearby instead:
Since we’re smartly avoiding the long haul to Amalfi or Pompeii for a day trip, let’s talk about some fantastic places closer to Rome! This is one of my favorite tips for tourists: choosing a nearby escape that’s easy to reach and incredibly rewarding.
Here’s a short list of 6 wonderful places for a day trip from Rome:
- Tivoli: Home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the stunning Villa d’Este with its incredible fountains, and Hadrian’s Villa, the sprawling ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s retreat.
- Ostia Antica: Often called “Rome’s Pompeii,” this remarkably well-preserved ancient Roman port city offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life, complete with mosaics, baths, and an amphitheater, all very easy to reach by train.
- Orvieto: A picturesque hilltop town in Umbria, famous for its magnificent cathedral, underground tunnels, and charming medieval streets. A funicular takes you right up to the town from the train station.
- Castel Gandolfo: The Pope’s historic summer residence, nestled by the beautiful Lake Albano in the Alban Hills. You can tour the Apostolic Palace and its stunning gardens.
- Cerveteri: Explore the ancient Etruscan Necropolis of Banditaccia, another fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site with unique tomb structures that mimic homes.
- Frascati (Castelli Romani): One of the charming wine-producing towns in the Alban Hills, perfect for a peaceful escape, wine tasting, and enjoying traditional local cuisine.
Each of these offers a unique experience and a refreshing break from the city, without the exhausting travel time!

26. The Trevi Fountain has an opening time now:
If you’re dreaming of tossing a coin into the gorgeous Trevi Fountain, listen up, my lovely, anxious traveler, because things work a little differently now.
Having visited Rome four times, each trip lasting at least a week, and with amazing Roman friends who keep me clued in on all the local secrets, I can tell you these new rules are super-important for a stress-free visit. These travel tips are straight from the source.
The Trevi Fountain now has specific hours, welcoming visitors from 9:00 AM to
9:00 PM, with the last entry at 8:30 PM. However, please note that Mondays and Fridays are maintenance days, so the fountain doesn’t open until noon.
Access is now controlled, allowing only 400 people at a time, which means a bit of a wait might be in your future if you don’t time it just right. My Roman pals tell me this system helps keep the crowds manageable, which is a win in my book.
There’s also a new path to follow: you enter through the central staircase and exit via Via dei Crociferi. And yes, there are new rules to keep this stunning landmark pristine:
- No sitting on the fountain’s edge,
- No food or drinks nearby,
- Your coins must be tossed into the designated area only.
These changes are all about preserving the fountain’s magic for everyone, and honestly, they’re brilliant tips for navigating one of the city’s most popular spots like a pro.

27. Download the essential apps to visit Rome:
Let’s talk apps! As someone who adores a super-organized trip (and, frankly, rarely gets lost—my sense of direction is usually spot-on), I know a good app can be a total game changer. These digital lifesavers are essential for navigating the Eternal City and ensuring your trip is all about soaking up the Dolce Vita, not stressing.
Here’s my curated list of must-have apps for your Roman adventure:
For Moving Around Rome:
While Google Maps is always handy, and Citymapper is my go-to app in many big cities, Rome’s public transport can feel like its own ancient puzzle. My Roman friends, who are practically public transport gurus, swear by a few specific apps for real-time info.
- MooneyGo (formerly myCicero): This one is fantastic for public transport. You can plan your journey, check real-time bus and tram times, and even buy and store tickets directly on your phone. It’s an official partner for ATAC, Rome’s public transport company, so the info is usually pretty spot-on. I love anything that cuts down on fumbling for tickets when a bus is pulling up!
- Probus Rome: This app is specifically designed for Rome’s bus network, giving you real-time waiting times, routes, and nearby stops. It’s often praised by locals for its accuracy when it comes to buses, which can be a bit more unpredictable than the metro. If you’re a bus-fan, this is your new best friend.
- itTaxi or FREE NOW: If you prefer taxis for those late-night returns or when your feet just can’t walk another step (and trust me, that will happen), these apps are your go-to. They let you book official Roman taxis, see your fare estimate, and track your ride. It’s like having a little taxi fairy godmother in your pocket, making sure you get to your luxurious boutique hotel without a hitch.
FOR YOUR HYDRATION ON THE GO:
Rome is famous for its “nasoni,” those public drinking fountains shaped like noses that provide wonderfully fresh, free water. Seriously, they are everywhere, and they are a lifesaver on a hot day. My local friends made sure I knew about these from my very first visit!
- Waidy WOW: This app, created by ACEA (Rome’s water utility company), is brilliant for finding all the nasoni and other water points around the city. Not only does it show you where to refill your water bottle, but it also gives you fun facts about the fountains and nearby points of interest. It’s a great way to stay hydrated, save money, and be eco-friendly all at once.
For All Your Other Roman Needs:
- Google Maps (with Offline Maps!): Even with dedicated transport apps, Google Maps is still essential for walking directions, finding restaurants, and generally orienting yourself. Pro-tip: download the offline map of Rome before you leave home. This way, even if your data connection goes rogue (and let’s be real, sometimes it does), you won’t get lost trying to find the Pantheon or that hidden gelato shop I told you about.
- Google Translate: While knowing a few basic Italian phrases is always charming, for those moments when you’re faced with a menu written entirely in Italian or need to ask a specific question, Google Translate is a lifesaver. The camera function, where you can point your phone at text and it translates it instantly, feels like pure magic.
- TheFork (or TripAdvisor): For those foodies (and let’s face it, that’s all of us in Italy!), TheFork is excellent for finding restaurants, reading reviews, and even making reservations, sometimes with discounts. TripAdvisor is also a solid choice for restaurant recommendations and reading up on attractions. Finding that perfect Roman cacio e pepe is crucial, and these apps help you skip the tourist traps.
- WhatsApp: This isn’t just for chatting with friends back home. In Italy, WhatsApp is how everyone communicates. Many tour guides, small businesses, and even some restaurants prefer WhatsApp for communication, so having it on hand is incredibly useful.
Having these apps downloaded and ready to go before you even leave home will give you a significant head start on conquering any travel anxiety.
These multi-day Italy tours starting in Rome, are your passport to an unforgettable experience. Forget the hassle of planning and book a tour that takes you beyond the tourist trail. From the ancient wonders of Rome to the sun-kissed shores of the Amalfi Coast, every moment is designed to inspire and delight.

28. Use Omio to book transport tickets outside Rome:
Let’s talk about the absolute queen of transport booking for exploring beyond the city limits: Omio. You see, while my internal GPS (aka my excellent sense of direction) usually keeps me from getting totally turned around, even I get overwhelmed by the sheer number of different websites and apps I’d have to juggle to book trains and buses across Europe, especially in Italy.
It’s like a treasure hunt, but with less treasure and more confusion. That’s why Omio is my absolute go-to app for booking trains and buses throughout Italy and the rest of Europe. Think of it as your one-stop shop for all your inter-city travel needs.
Instead of hopping between Trenitalia, Italo, and various bus company sites, comparing prices and schedules on each one, Omio pulls it all together in a beautifully simple interface. This means you can easily compare all your options, trains, buses, and even flights for your desired route on one screen.
The best part, and this is truly a game-changer for someone who craves super-organized travel, is that once you book your tickets through Omio, they’re all neatly stored inside the app. No more frantic searching through your email for a PDF, or trying to remember which random website held that specific ticket for your day trip to Florence or Naples.
This little trick is one of my top tips in Rome and outside Rome because it eliminates that “where’s my ticket?!” panic. It makes hopping between gorgeous Italian cities an absolute breeze, freeing you up to enjoy the journey and the incredible destinations, not the logistics.
29. Join my Rome Facebook group to get help planning:

That’s why I created something truly special for our community: my exclusive Rome Facebook group.
This isn’t just any old travel group—it’s a supportive space where you can ask me directly, along with all our fantastic members, any question you have about planning your Roman adventure.

31. Book a cooking class:
If you’re anything like me and obsessed with exploring a new culture through its food, and let’s be real, in Rome, that’s practically a sport, then taking a cooking class in Rome should be high on your list of tips for travelers visiting Rome.
This isn’t just about learning to whip up a mean cacio e pepe (though, trust me, you absolutely should), it’s about diving head-first into the heart of Roman life. Travelers absolutely adore these classes because they offer a hands-on experience that goes way beyond simply eating at a restaurant.
You get to discover the secrets behind those incredible, simple Italian dishes, often learning from a passionate local chef in a charming, authentic setting. It’s an immersive, cultural adventure where you’re not just observing, but actively participating, rolling pasta by hand or perfecting that rich tomato sauce.
My Roman friends always tell me it’s one of the best ways to connect with their food heritage, truly.

32. Plan how to reach your hotel from the airport:
Let’s talk about the very first step of your Roman adventure: getting from the airport to your fabulous accommodation. This is one of those things to know before going to Rome that can set the tone for your trip.
Since I’ve landed at both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports twice and tried a different transportation method each time, I’ve gained some personal insights for you.
While I’ve explored all the options, my personal favorite for airport transfers is always a taxi. Call it a super-organized traveler’s luxury, but I hate having to lug suitcases through metro stations or crowded bus stops after a long flight. It just instantly melts away any stress.
However, you need to see all the options so you can choose what works best for your needs and budget. I have a detailed article covering every single option for reaching Rome city center from both Fiumicino and Ciampino.
From trains and buses to private transfers, so you can compare them all and make the most informed, stress-free decision.

33. Learn the local formalities:
This is one of those small efforts that yields huge rewards and truly enhances your Roman adventure: learning a few local formalities. Trust me, while many Romans speak English, making even a tiny effort in Italian is like unlocking a secret level of charm and connection.
As someone who’s made a few embarrassing pronunciation blunders myself (and laughed about them endlessly with my Roman friends), I can tell you the effort is always appreciated, and often sparks a genuine smile.
Here are 12 simple phrases that will make your interactions so much smoother and more enjoyable:
- Buon giorno: Good morning or good day, use this until early afternoon.
- Buon pomeriggio: Good afternoon, perfect for those later hours before evening.
- Buona sera: Good evening, use this as the day winds down and into the night.
- Mi scusi: Excuse me, or I’m sorry (formal), super handy if you bump into someone.
- Grazie: Thank you, a classic for a reason.
- Prego: You’re welcome / Please go ahead, you’ll hear this a lot.
- Per favore: Please, always a good idea.
- Sì: Yes, short and sweet.
- No: No, equally handy.
- Ciao: Hi/Hello/Bye (informal), great for shops or casual encounters.
- Quanto costa?: How much does it cost? Essential for shopping.
- Parla inglese?: Do you speak English? Polite way to ask if you’re stuck.
Mastering these basic phrases is one of my top tips for being prepared before visiting Rome and truly immersing yourself in the culture. It shows respect, makes daily interactions genuinely fun, and helps fight any anxiety about communicating. You’ll be amazed at how far a simple “grazie” will take you!

34. Wifi is weak, get Airalo:
One essential tip I must give you before going to Rome, which often gets overlooked until you’re in a pinch, is reliable internet. Struggling with weak hotel Wi-Fi or hunting for hotspots is the last thing you want when you’re trying to navigate Roman streets or share that epic gelato photo. That’s why I love Airalo.
I’ve been using Airalo eSIMs for years on my travels, and it has genuinely never disappointed me. It’s incredibly easy to set up, provides instant data access, and ensures you’re always connected without stress. It’s a game-changer for a super-organized, worry-free trip.
Packing tips for Rome

35. Always wear comfortable shoes:
As I said already, you are going to walk a lot in Rome, so please, I know you are going to be in Italy, and you want to look stunning in all your pictures, but make sure to bring comfortable shoes, and they won’t give you any pain while exploring the city. That can be a way to ruin your holiday in Rome.

36. Cover your shoulders and legs to enter a religious building:
Covering your legs and shoulders is essential, so make sure to pack dresses that cover your shoulders or pack a scarf. You will not be allowed to enter the San Pietro Basilica if you show your shoulders or legs, so please dress accordingly (carry a scarf to cover your shoulders during the summertime).

37. Pack a reusable bag:
Here’s a super-simple but incredibly effective piece of vacation tips: always pack a reusable bag. Trust me on this one.
As someone who has, on more than one occasion, unexpectedly stumbled upon the perfect little handcrafted souvenir near the Pantheon, or decided last-minute that I absolutely needed that artisanal pasta from a tiny shop in Trastevere, I know the joy (and sometimes the logistical headache) of spontaneous shopping.
You see, when you’re wandering those charming Roman streets, you’ll inevitably find little treasures, whether it’s a beautiful scarf, some delicious local olive oil, or a quirky piece of art. Having a lightweight, reusable bag tucked into your daypack means you won’t have to scramble for flimsy plastic bags (or pay for them) when you reach checkout.
It keeps your hands free for taking photos or, more importantly, holding that crucial gelato. This small packing detail makes all the difference, helping you carry your precious finds comfortably and making your exploration of Rome even more relaxed and delightful.
Valentina’s Tips: If you dream about staying in the most loved neighborhood for foodies, you should book a room in one of the 12 Romantic boutique hotels in Trastevere, to be just a walk away from some of the top food places in Rome.

38. Bring a refillable water bottle:
This is one of my absolute favorite travel tips you need to know before visiting Rome when traveling on a budget! You simply must bring a refillable water bottle. Seriously, Rome is blessed with thousands of free, ancient drinking fountains, called “nasoni” (little big noses) by the locals, that offer fresh, cool, and perfectly safe water throughout the day.
There’s truly no need to buy bottled water while you’re exploring the Colosseum or wandering through Trastevere, which saves you money and helps the planet.
While you’ll spot nasoni everywhere, to make your life super-easy and avoid any time wasted hunting, I highly recommend downloading an app like Waidy WOW or I Nasoni di Roma to find the nearest fountain.
Staying hydrated has never been more convenient or wonderfully Roman!
Valentina’s Tips: If you dream about staying in the most loved neighborhood for foodies, you should book a room in one of the 12 Romantic boutique hotels in Trastevere, to be just a walk away from some of the top food places in Rome.
39. Think twice before packing stilettos:
Here’s one of my top tips for tourists on what not to wear in Rome that your ankles will thank you for: think twice before packing those stilettos. While they might look fabulous, much of Rome’s city center is paved with sanpietrini.
These are those gorgeous, ancient cobblestones, small, irregular blocks of dark, volcanic rock that give Rome its timeless charm.
However, walking on sanpietrini with very thin heels can be incredibly dangerous. Your heels can easily get stuck between the stones, leading to twisted ankles, scuffed shoes, or even an embarrassing tumble (and trust me, I’ve seen it happen!).
Stick to comfy flats, stylish sneakers, or sturdy block heels. You’ll be doing a lot of exploring, and happy feet mean you can truly soak up every unforgettable moment without any painful distractions!

Tips for arriving in Rome

40 Don’t Tip Your Taxi Driver (Unless They Give You the Goods):
Here’s a little secret from my many trips to Rome that might surprise you: when it comes to taxis in Rome, you typically don’t need to tip your driver. Unlike in some other places, it’s not customary in Italy, so please don’t feel obligated to add an extra percentage.
This can be a huge relief for a super-organized traveler like you, as it’s one less thing to calculate! However, my rule of thumb is a little different.
Suppose a taxi driver is particularly friendly and open to sharing some insider local tips, the kind of hidden gems and accurate Roman insights I love sharing on Valentina’s Travel Guide. In that case, I’ll absolutely show my appreciation with a tip.
Otherwise, if the fare is, say, 19 euros, I’ll often just hand over a 20 and let them keep the change. It’s a small gesture, easy to manage, and keeps everything stress-free.

41. You have to pay the tourist tax at the accommodation check-in:
Here’s a tiny but important detail that sometimes catches first-timers by surprise, but don’t you worry, I’ve got you covered: the tourist tax. This is a mandatory city tax you’ll need to pay directly to your accommodation, usually at check-in. It’s not a huge amount, but it’s good to factor it into your budget so there are no surprises.
The price of the tax actually depends on the type of place you’re staying. So, if you’ve snagged a charming apartment, it will typically cost less per person per night than if you’re in, say, a five-star hotel. Payment methods can vary too; some places prefer cash, while others accept cards, so it’s always smart to clarify or have a bit of both on hand.
If you happen to be short on cash at check-in, don’t panic! In my experience, most places are perfectly understanding if you ask to settle it later once you’ve had a chance to hit an ATM. It’s just one of those little things to know before visiting Rome that helps keep your trip perfectly organized and stress-free.
Tips for Sightseeing in Rome

42. Keep your belongings always in your sight:
Let’s discuss a crucial point for your peace of mind and one of the essential things to know before visiting Rome: pickpockets. Now, don’t let this stress you out, but Rome is bustling with tourists all year round, and unfortunately, that makes it a prime spot for nimble-fingered thieves.
It’s not about being paranoid; it’s about being prepared and thoughtful, which is totally in our super-organized wheelhouse!
This is one of those crucial travel tips I can’t emphasize enough: never leave your bags unattended, not even for a second, whether you’re admiring the Trevi Fountain or enjoying a Roman coffee. Also, seriously consider investing in an anti-theft backpack or purse.
These usually feature clever design elements, such as hidden zippers, slash-resistant fabric, and secure clasps, which make it much harder for someone to snatch your valuables without you noticing. I’ve seen them work wonders!
By taking these simple precautions, you can focus on soaking in all the Roman magic without worrying about your belongings.

43. Take a nap in the afternoon:
Here’s a golden rule for truly experiencing Rome like a local: embrace the Italian rhythm! When exploring, I always get up and out early in the morning, to explore those magnificent sites when the crowds are thinner and the light is just beautiful.
Then, around 4:00 PM, I do as us Italians love to do: head back to my accommodation, shower off the day’s adventures, and even sneak in a quick nap. Refreshed and re-energized, I am perfectly ready for a delicious aperitivo before enjoying a leisurely, late Italian dinner.
It’s the ultimate super-organized way to recharge and savor every moment of your Roman holiday, ensuring you’re fresh for whatever the evening has in store.

44. An excellent way to explore the city is by booking a bike tour:
If you’re like me and want to pack as much incredible exploration as possible into your precious vacation time, then let me tell you about a fantastic option: booking a bike tour in Rome! You can easily book all sorts of activities in the city, but this one is a real gem for getting around efficiently.
A bike tour is a perfect way to explore a lot of ground quickly, effortlessly gliding between ancient sites and charming piazzas.
Plus, you get the amazing bonus of having a knowledgeable local guide right there with you, who will not only lead the way but also teach you fascinating bits of Roman history as you pedal along. It’s an active, engaging, and super-organized way to soak in the sights and delve deeper into Rome’s incredible past.

45. Skip the metro if you can:
Here’s one of those crucial travel tips that might surprise you: if you can, try to skip the metro when exploring the city. While it might seem convenient, unfortunately, the metro in Rome isn’t always the safest transport option.
My fantastic Roman friends, and even a couple of chatty taxi drivers, have warned me to be very careful. Pickpockets often work in groups, pushing you into a corner or creating a distraction to try to steal from you. So, always be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings extra secure.
Walking or using other transport options, where possible, is often the most relaxed and worry-free way to explore Rome’s beauty.
Hey Traveler!

46. Always use official Roman taxis:
One of the most essential things to know before visiting Rome is to always use official Roman taxis to avoid getting scammed. You can easily recognize these legitimate cabs by their white color, official “TAXI” sign on top, and municipality crests on the doors.
It’s not worth the risk with unmarked cars! You can also book an official one easily using the FREE NOW taxi app, which is a total lifesaver for stress-free pickups. No haggling, no confusion—just safe, reliable transport for your Roman adventures.

47. Don’t sit on the Spanish steps:
One of those essential tips for tourists that could save you some unexpected euros is: whatever you do, don’t sit on the Spanish Steps. I know, I know, they look like the perfect spot to catch your breath after climbing all those stairs to Trinita dei Monti, but trust me, it’s a big no-no (unless you do like me and sit for 3 seconds to take a picture).
The Spanish Steps are considered a monument and a protected historical site, so authorities are very strict about their preservation. If you’re caught taking a load off on those iconic steps, you could face a fine of €250. And heaven forbid you accidentally damage or dirty them, that fine could jump up to €400.
These rules are firmly in place to protect this beautiful landmark from wear and tear, ensuring it stays pristine for generations to come. So, admire them, climb them, take your photos, but please, no sitting!

48. Avoid Bus line 64:
Another important heads-up for navigating Rome: try to avoid bus line 64 if possible. While it might look like a convenient route, serving 17 stops between Termini and Stazione S. Pietro, it’s unfortunately notorious for being full of pickpockets.
Seriously, this bus is a known hotspot for them. As a super-organized traveler who hates unwelcome surprises, I always make it a point to steer clear of this line if possible. If you must use it, hold your bag tightly, keep your valuables out of reach, and be extra vigilant.
But for a truly stress-free journey, opting for a walk, a different bus route, or even a taxi for that particular stretch is often the more intelligent choice.

49. Avoid the Termini station at night:
One of those crucial places to avoid in Rome when the sun goes down: Termini Station. While it’s a bustling transport hub by day, the area around Termini isn’t considered safe at night, especially for women. I’ve read many articles, written by locals in Italian, where women working there have even requested day shifts only because they don’t feel safe after dark.
This isn’t about fear-mongering; it’s about being aware and staying safe. So, if your train arrives late or you find yourself near Termini after hours, just grab an official taxi straight to your accommodation. Better safe and stress-free than sorry!

50. Follow the tourist laws:
To ensure your Roman holiday is nothing but smooth sailing and stress-free, it’s essential to be aware of Rome’s local laws and customs. Think of these as polite requests from the city to help preserve its ancient beauty and ensure everyone has a great time.
Knowing these do and don’ts upfront will help you avoid any unexpected fines and truly blend in like a pro.
Here’s a quick rundown of what are dos and don’ts when traveling to Rome:
- Don’t sit on the Spanish Steps. Yes, I know we talked about this, but it’s worth repeating. These iconic steps are considered a monument, and you could face a hefty fine of €250 for taking a seat.
- Don’t wade, swim, or even dip your feet in the city’s fountains. This applies to all of them, from the grand Trevi Fountain to smaller, charming ones. These are historical art pieces, not swimming pools, and fines can be significant.
- Avoid “messy” outdoor eating near historic monuments. While a Roman picnic sounds delightful, scarfing down a pizza slice right on the steps of the Pantheon or the Colosseum is generally frowned upon and can lead to fines for littering or damaging the site. Find a park bench or a quiet piazza instead.
- Don’t walk around bare-chested. This goes for both men and women. Rome is a city of respect, and showing too much skin, especially near religious sites, is not appropriate.
- No dragging strollers or wheelie suitcases up or down historic staircases. While it might seem like the easiest path, it causes wear and tear on ancient steps. Look for ramps or elevators if available, or be prepared to carry your luggage.
- When drinking from the public drinking fountains (nasoni), don’t place your lips on the spout. Instead, cup your hands to catch the water, or if you have a bottle, fill it without direct contact. It’s a hygiene thing, and it’s how the locals do it.
- Don’t attach “love locks” to bridges or monuments. This was once a popular trend, especially on Ponte Milvio, but it’s now forbidden and fines can be imposed. These locks damage the historic structures.
- Refrain from eating or drinking directly in front of churches or other places of worship. While you might grab a quick snack, it’s considered disrespectful to eat or drink right on the steps or at the entrance.
Following these simple travel tips for first timers means you’re respecting the city, its history, and its people, ensuring your trip is filled with joy and zero headaches. You’ll be exploring like a true Roman, and that’s the best kind of travel, if you ask me!

Tips for eating in Rome

51. Have an Aperitivo in a typical aperitivo bar:
It’s time for one of my absolute favorite tips for first timers: embracing the Roman aperitivo! The city is overflowing with simply lovely spots where you can enjoy a perfect glass of wine or a refreshing Aperol Spritz.
But here’s where it gets truly magical (and budget-friendly, even for those of us who love a splurge): in some areas, many places offer a complimentary buffet alongside your drink.
You pay for your drink, which is typically around 10 euros, but then you get to indulge in a fantastic spread of delicious Roman food, think mini pizzas, pasta salads, cured meats, and more, and you can eat as much as you want!
It’s an ingenious system and, frankly, your cheap dinner is sorted without sacrificing flavor or atmosphere. It’s an excellent way to unwind, soak in the local vibe, and sample some incredible flavors without any stress about finding your next meal.

52. Eat anything with artichokes:
Let’s talk about a Roman culinary delight that I absolutely adore: artichokes! If you visit Rome between late winter and spring, roughly February through May, you are in for a serious treat, because you’ll find them everywhere in local restaurants.
As someone whose Roman friends constantly tempt me with their artichoke dishes, and since they are truly some of my favorite vegetables, I can tell you this is a must-try.
You’ll discover Roman artichokes prepared in so many delicious ways: as a crispy fried starter (hello, carciofi alla giudia!), tossed through your pasta for a hearty first course, served alongside your succulent meat, or simply as a tender, flavorful side dish.
When they’re in season, these local artichokes are incredibly fresh and sweet, making them an unmissable part of your Roman culinary exploration. If you like artichokes even half as much as I do, make sure to order them, and prepare for a truly authentic taste of Rome!

53. Check prices before you order:
Here’s one of those essential tips that will save you from an unwelcome surprise: always check prices before you order at cafes and restaurants, especially in the super-touristy areas of the city center.
Some of these spots can be real tourist traps, and you don’t want to find yourself paying €10 for a simple cappuccino just because you sat down!

Plus, I’ve got my top picks for the best lunch spots in Rome and, of course, the most authentic local Roman restaurants where you can savor incredible food without the tourist-trap shock. Trust me, it’s all about knowing where the locals go!

However, here’s a little secret for your budget-conscious side: restaurants right next to famous sites and in the big central squares are usually more expensive than those just a five-minute walk away.

56. Enjoy a sunset from a rooftop bar or restaurant:
After a day of conquering ancient ruins and charming cobblestone streets, my lovely, anxious traveler, there’s truly no better way to unwind than to enjoy a sunset from a stunning rooftop bar or restaurant in Rome.
We loved settling into a comfy chair, a delicious Spritz in hand, watching the Eternal City glow as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery oranges and soft purples.
This was our moment of pure relaxation, a well-deserved reward after all that excellent exploration. Rome’s rooftops offer some truly breathtaking views, think domes, ancient monuments, and terracotta tiles all bathed in that magical golden light.
It’s the perfect way to embrace a little luxury and soak in the beauty of the city from a serene, elevated perspective before you head off for a fabulous Roman dinner. Pure bliss, I tell you!

57. At the restaurant, ask for help to choose the wine:
In Italy, you will never find bad wines in a restaurant, so if you don’t know much about wine, ask for help from your waiter/sommelier. Look at the wine list and remember that even the cheapest bottle of wine is still delicious in Italy.
Heads up! For a quick yet fulfilling Roman adventure, my 3 days itinerary in Rome Italy balances iconic sights with delicious local food. See the Colosseum, Vatican City, and more, while savoring authentic Roman flavors, all within a tight schedule.
