What time is lunch eaten in Rome?

Let’s talk about the Italian rhythm of eating! Growing up, my grandmother instilled in me a strict observation of mealtimes. It’s a cultural cornerstone for every Italian.

Breakfast, typically enjoyed between 7 and 8 a.m., is a sweet affair of pastries, cereal, or my beloved yogurt with granola, always accompanied by a rich coffee, cappuccino, or latte.

Nowadays, some Italians like to swap coffee for tea as I do (I cannot function without all my healthy herbal teas; I even take them with me on holiday).

Mid-morning brings a light “merenda” around 10 a.m. – a quick pick-me-up of coffee, a fruit, a sweet or savory treat. Lunchtime, usually between 12 and 1.30 p.m., is a carb-loaded affair of pasta or risotto. Traditionally protein-based with vegetables or a hearty soup, dinner is enjoyed between 7 and 8.30 p.m.

Remember, Italian dining culture revolves around leisurely enjoyment. While there are many unmissable food places in this list, and you will probably wish to dine at all of these delightful street food spots I found for you, make sure not to have lunch too late during the day.

Italians don’t like to have dinner after 10 p.m., so to ensure optimal service, reserve your table between 7:30 and 9:00 p.m.

Where to Have the Best Street Food in Rome

Having the best lunch spots in Rome is a delicious experience (Lajos and I loved every bite when we were in Rome). I recommend trying some tasty street food, so you can continue exploring this charming city. Sitting in a restaurant would be perfect for dinner, allowing you more time to relax and enjoy a fantastic Roman meal.

To discover typical Roman recipes and learn what to order, I have created a comprehensive guide to the best food to try in Rome. You will go there already knowing what you want to try!

If you are short on time, an excellent solution to try as many local dishes as possible is to book a Rome street food tour with a guide. You will try many local dishes, learn about Rome, and meet other travelers!

1. Antico Forno Marco Roscioli:

Antico Forno Marco Roscioli is a bakery every pizza lover has to visit; Lajos and I had lunch at Antico Forno Marco Roscioli after visiting the famous Campo de Fiori market, one of the popular places in Rome, which is a short walk away, and we loved their pizza. They serve pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice), a fantastic way to try different pizzas with various toppings. Pizza al taglio means ‘pizza by the cut’ and is a typical Roman way to eat pizza, and I think it is genius.

You will choose the pizza al taglio you fancy (see the pizza al taglio in the picture above, which we took at Antico Forno Marco Roscioli) and buy as much as you want of it, paying by the weight.

I advise you to try the “Bianca con mortazza” (white pizza filled with mortadella), which is only dough with mortadella. Additionally, the “Rossa” (red) is a typical option, made with the addition of sweet tomato sauce. They have many more toppings, like mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, mixed veggies, salsiccia, and more.

They also sell delicious Roman sweets and lunch boxes featuring the best local food, making this a perfect place to grab your breakfast.

What to taste at Antico Forno Marco Roscioli: pizza with burrata cheese and sundried tomatoes, or salame, stracciatella cheese and olives, or one with mozzarella, aubergines, and tomato.
Special diets: Vegan and Vegetarian options.
Opening Times: see here.
Address: Via dei Chiavari, 34, 00186 Roma RM (see on Google Maps)

Pssst! Short on time, big on thrillsor seeking strolls through ancient grandeur? Rome’s got a tour (or ten) for you. Explore the Eternal City with diverse experiences for every kind of traveler. See all the activities and tours available. You won’t regret it!

Travel Safety Tip: As soon as you book your next adventure, buy good travel insurance in case you need to “unfortunately” delay, extend, or cancel your trip. I usually find good deals on VISITORSCOVERAGE for up to 1 month of trip length and SAFETYWING for longer trips.  They are insurance companies that cover everything related to your travel.

2. Bonci Pizzarium:

Bonci Pizzarium is another heaven for Foodies. You can find pizzas, focaccia, and the famous “suppli’ al Telefono.” If you have heard about the famous “carbonara supply,” you must know it was made here for the first time. The owner invented it, and since then, it has had great success as one of the best street foods in Rome.

They also make other fried food like “crocchetta di patate” (like a mashed potatoes cylinder, breaded and then deep-fried. I love it with ketchup and mayo, and “arancino” (like suppli but typical from southern Italy), and more. You can see the owner on a Netflix Chef’s Table Pizza episode!

I have to be honest with you, I was planning to have lunch at Bonci Pizzarium on my fourth visit to Rome last April, after attending one of the best early morning Vatican Tour with Sistine Chapel (which I highly recommend to check out as it is one of the best museums of Rome), but my Roman friends who live nearby recommend that we avoid it (I had been there a few years before).

They told me their pizza is as good as many others in Rome; the only difference is that this place has become very famous and much more expensive than the others, thanks to its popularity on social media. So we decided to listen to my local Roman friends and went somewhere else instead.

What to taste at Bonci Pizzarium: the carbonara supplì, the original supplì, and any pizza al taglio.
Special diets: vegan options.
Opening Times: see here.
Address: Via della Meloria 43, 00136 Roma. (see on Google Maps)

Valentina’s Note: Remember that Bonci Pizzarium is a famous lunch spot, thanks to the owner’s appearance on Italian television and Netflix, and the many influencers posting videos about this place. The queue can be even more than one hour long. Is it worth it? I don’t think so (and my Roman friends agree). Their pizza is delicious, but so is the pizza in many other lunch spots on this list. Additionally, their prices are significantly higher than those of other places, as it is a well-known lunch spot on social media. It’s entirely up to you whether you want to dine there.

Craving more than just a taste of Rome? Take your love affair with Roman cuisine to the next level by learning to whip up its magic yourself with a hands-on cooking class! ‍

3. Supplizio:

Do you want to try the famous Suppli’ in Rome? Supplizio is one of the best places to eat lunch when in Rome if you are craving the renowned suppli. It is also the perfect place if you are looking for cheap eats in Rome when walking around the city.

They have six different variants of it and some other delicious Roman delicacies like Trippa alla Romana (Lajos favorite), Mozzarella in Carrozza (like a toastie with ham and cheese but instead of being toasted, it gets breaded and deep-fried, I men, guys, you have to taste it, it is so good), Polpette di melanzane (aubergine balls deep fried, one of my favorite) and some salads and soups.

Lajos and I were walking along Via del Supplizio in Via del Pellegrino, looking for some handmade Roman souvenirs, when we were caught by the delicious smell of suppli in the air. We obviously decided to have a food break and taste their delightful suppli.

They have three locations, but I added the one I visited with Lajos to my street food Rome guide, which is also the most central. You can see their other shops on their website. The link is below!

What to taste at Supplizio: classic supplì, cacio e pepe supplì, and the amatriciana supplì.
Special diets: Vegetarian options.
Opening Times: see here.
Address: Via dei Banchi Vecchi 143, 00186 Roma. (see on Google Maps)

A cozy bar setting featuring a Trapizzino Rome Italy, a popular Roman street food filled with a rich tomato topping, paired with a glass of red wine on a marble countertop, exemplifying the best street food Rome has to offer and an ideal choice for lunch
Trapezzino with meatballs in tomato sauce and a good glass of local red wine

4. Trapizzino:

The famous Trapizzino is one of the best street food spots where you can eat while in Rome. It is a white triangle-shaped pizza pocket closed on the sides. It is made with the same dough as pizza and stuffed with Roman recipes.

From beef tongue in green sauce (Lajos’s favorite one), braised oxtail (my favorite one), meatballs in tomato sauce, zighinì (spicy meat stew), picchiapò (Roman beef stew), to pork belly Roman style, there is something for every taste. Lajos and I have already tried four of their trapizzini and cannot wait to go back to Rome to try the others.

This is also a great place to taste one of the best supplì you can find in Rome. On our last visit to Trapizzino in Rome last April, we also had the supplì with leeks and taleggio cheese, and it was incredible.

Their Trapizzino is so good that I even added it to my 3-day and 4-day itineraries in Rome, Italy, so don’t miss it, it is one of the best lunch spots where to eat while in Rome.

They have six locations in Rome (and one in my city, Trieste), but I added the one I went to (in Rome, obviously), located in Trastevere. You can see their other shops on their website. The link is below!

What to taste at Trapizzino: My favorite Tapizzinos are braised oxtail or the aubergine parmigiana one, but Lajos would tell you to try the tongue with green sauce and that one with Roman tripe.
Special diets: Vegetarian options.
Opening Times: see here.
Address: Piazza Trilussa, 46, 00153 Roma RM, Italy (see on Google Maps)

Valentina’s Tips: If you dream about staying in the most loved neighborhood for foodies, you should book a room in one of the 12 Romantic boutique hotels in Trastevere, to be just a walk away from some of the top food places in Rome.

5. Er Buchetto:

Er Buchetto is one of the best lunch places where to eat a sandwich with “porchetta” (roast pork), and I can guarantee you this because Lajos and I shared one of their porchetta sandwich and it was delicious. It is an excellent option for fast food to eat while walking around Rome. Just grab a beer as we did, and you’re settled for lunch.

Located close to Stazione Termini (Termini train station), it is the best place to stop if you have just arrived in Rome from the airport, feel hungry, or are about to leave and want to have the last bite of delicious Roman cuisine.

What to taste at Er Buchetto: the famous roast pork sandwich.
Special diets: vegan side dishes and cheeses.
Opening Times: see here.

6. Dar Filettaro a Santa Barbara:

This place couldn’t be missed in my Street Food Guide. Dar Filettaro a Santa Barbara is a Trattoria where you can eat the “filetti di baccala’” (fried little slices of cod), one of the best fast food you can also eat on the go.

My local friends took me to have dinner at Dar Filettaro in Santa Barbara during one of my visits, and they told me that this is a very famous old-style place to eat on a budget, with local food, and I must say that it was a great idea to eat local and save some money.

They also have many starters, salads, the “puntarelle” I wrote about in “Delicious Food and Drinks to Try in Rome”, and some desserts.

All the portions are small, so you can try different dishes without feeling too full.

What to taste at Dar Filettaro a Santa Barbara: deep-fried cod, puntarelle salad (when in season).
Special diets: only vegan side dishes.

Supplì Roma is the perfect place to enjoy authentic local street food, and it was also where Lajos and I had our first supplì on our first visit to Rome, as highly recommended by some of my Roman friends. This beloved institution has been serving up mouthwatering street food since 1979, making it the perfect spot for local fast food.

Famous for its iconic supplì, a rice croquette filled with tomato sauce and a gooey mozzarella center, Supplì Roma is a must-try for any visitor craving Italian fast food while visiting Rome. It is also part of many food tours in Rome, which you will love attending.

While there’s no seating, the irresistible allure of their freshly made supplì makes it well worth enjoying on the go. So make sure to add it to your itinerary to visit Rome as one of the best places for lunch.

Wondering what did Romans eat for lunch? The foundation of the ancient Roman diet was simple: cereals, vegetables, legumes, and cheese formed the staple for most. However, the wealthy Romans indulged in a more lavish lifestyle, feasting on delicacies like fresh poultry, eggs, fish, and a wider variety of vegetables. Their culinary adventures extended to the unusual, with dormice and flamingos making surprising appearances on some menus!

And if you still have room after all that deliciousness, prepare to be amazed by their dessert meatballs (there is no meat in them)! The piña colada balls with ricotta, coconut, rum syrup, and mint are a tropical delight.

While Polpetta offers vegetarian options, it doesn’t have vegan meatballs. It has three locations in Rome and one in Milan. Make sure to save it on your itinerary to visit Rome as one of the top places to eat lunch.

Pizza bianca with mortadella at Da Gino 1950 in Rome.

10. Da Gino 1950:

Gino 1950 is a tiny shop that’s been serving up pure simplicity since 1950. This place couldn’t be missed in my Street Food Guide as it is the place to go for the best food experience: pizza bianca con mortadella.

It’s a classic Roman sandwich with fresh, crispy white pizza and high-quality mortadella. Lajos and I devoured ours after exploring Villa Borghese. They could have added a few extra slices of mortadella, but apart from that, I can’t recommend it enough!

Order your sandwich at the window and watch as it’s made fresh to order. Be warned: It’s often busy, so try to go before noon to skip the queue, as we did (one of the best tips on visiting Rome is to do your best to visit these famous food places before noon and avoid the crowd).

This is also one of the cheapest street foods in Rome, perfect for budget-conscious travelers who are looking for some of the best lunch spots where to enjoy the local food.

Looking for an authentic lunch experience in Rome? La Fraschetta is a must-visit and one of the best places to eat in Rome like a local!

13. Il Maritozzo Rosso – Kitchen Lab:

Il Maritozzo Rosso is a game-changer and one of the best lunch spots in this street food guide. Since 2016, it has been the first and only spot dedicated to Roman cuisine and the savory maritozzo.

Don’t expect a fancy restaurant here; this is a street food laboratory in the heart of Trastevere. Grab a spot at the counter, as Lajos and I did, or one of the few tables inside, and prepare for a flavor explosion (remember to order at the counter).

They do the classic sweet maritozzo with whipped cream and all the sugary goodness, but let’s be real, Lajos and I went to Il Maritozzo Rosso for the savory stuff.

They’ve taken this Roman staple and elevated it to new heights with fillings like killer Amatriciana sauce and sharp Roman Pecorino, as well as crispy sautéed chicory and creamy mozzarella, and hearty meatballs in rich tomato sauce. This is lunch done right, street food style.

They have two locations, one in Trastevere (where we went and where you can also find some of the most famous Roman restaurants in Rome) and one in the Prati neighborhood. When exploring Trastevere, make sure to stop at Il Maritozzo, it is one of the best lunch spots you cannot miss in Rome.

What to taste at Il Maritozzo Rosso: the fritto misto (a mix of all their fried food), the Maritozzo with burrata cheese, zucchini, and guanciale (pork cheek), the Maritozzo with burrata cheese, chicory, and anchovies, and the sweet maritozzo with coffee, filled with Tiramisù cream, chocolate chips, and cocoa powder.

14. Antica Porchetteria Granieri dal 1916:

Antica Porchetteria Granieri, established in 1916, is a must-visit for anyone seeking the best sandwiches in Rome. This iconic eatery offers a taste of authentic local food at its finest. With a whole porchetta on display, it’s impossible to resist the aroma that fills the air.

Their simple menu focuses on what they do best: crafting delicious, fresh sandwiches filled with crispy and tender porchetta. Every bite is a testament to the quality of their ingredients.

What to taste at Antica Porchetteria Granieri: Il Norcino sandwich with porchetta, pecorino cheese, green sauce, and sundried tomatoes. Le Origini 1916 sandwich with porchetta, caramelized apples, sultanas, walnuts, and mustard.

15. Mercato Centrale:

You’ve probably heard about the Mercato Centrale. Central Market in Rome is a food market near Rome’s Termini station, and you probably have seen it in many videos on social media. It’s a foodie’s dream, right? Well, not exactly. I’m all about honesty, so here’s the deal.

My husband, Lajos, and I visited Rome for the fourth time a couple of months ago, and Mercato Centrale was on our itinerary after visiting the Colosseum and Roman Forum. But as soon as we got near Termini station, my gut feeling was, “Nope.” Now, my husband, Lajos, is not one to be easily scared, but the atmosphere was just off. The area around the station is, let’s say, challenging.

Lots of people in need, which is heartbreaking, but it also made us feel unsafe.

We ditched the market plan and hightailed it out of there. Later that night, our Roman friends confirmed our suspicions. Termini is a hotspot for crime, both for locals and tourists. It’s a bummer because the market itself looks incredible.

But safety first, right? I always tell you this in all my articles: always be safe. The market is inside the station, so you’re relatively safe there. But once you step outside, it’s a different story.

I know, I know. It’s not the most cheerful travel advice. But I’d rather be real with you guys than sugarcoat things. If you are inside the station because you just arrived from one of the Roman airports or have to catch a train from there, visit the market (you are already inside the station), but I would avoid going there just for the food.

There are plenty of other places in Rome where you can enjoy the same food without risking your safety.
